Hey, just got admitted. What’s the party scene like at Oxford?
@introtoxx
When you looked at your 60k from Emory, was it grants, merit or part of the Emory Advantage Program? That is awesome! Congrats again!!!
@anxietydriven The party scene at Oxford is pretty bland because everyone (including me) goes to party at the Atlanta campus/Georgia Tech. The party scene at Emory is decent but I’d say Tech has a better one since it has more frats, D1 sports, and is a public school.
@bernadette857 : If you(he) hasn’t, be sure to take a look at this: http://chemistry.emory.edu/articulate/chemistry_unbound/story_html5.html
It not only very rigorous but it is also “different”…they just did full implementation of this new curriculum structure this year. I personally respect it and hope it lasts, but I advise students coming to Emory to major in this or majors that require chemistry courses to check their notions of what “general chemistry” and “organic chemistry” is at the door. These changes may make first years especially uncomfortable as one usually envisions freshman chemistry courses as being only about math and plugging and chugging (often with little requirement of understanding the conceptual basis). This new structure has a heavy conceptual bias and also starts integrating heavy doses of organic in the 2nd semester which is unusual (maybe only Michigan and some liberal arts schools have this model). There are at least two more articles on Emory’s websites and marketing as well as on the web that explain these changes and the reasoning behind them from the instructors’ (and some students’) points of view.
@collegetalk1010 I am a big Oxford fan! and my daughter chose Oxford over Tulane and she is happy with that choice. To be honest, she felt Tulane was too much of a party school for her but I know other kids who love it there. I believe Oxford is more prestigious and more academically challenging. I have met lots of interesting, outgoing Oxford kids and my daughter has great friends, and the weekends are fun - but her friends also like to study. It is a warm and social place but kids are serious about their academics and the party scene is pretty low key. (No one is 21) Tulane is in New Orleans and the campus is much bigger than Oxford and it seems there is always a party happening - totally different vibes. Both are great schools.
@TheTennisNinja should I worry about not having a car and about coming from out of state, therefore I don’t know a lot of Georgia people.
Does anyone know if you can pick a roommate at Oxford? Or is it all random
@anxietydriven If you have a car, I would recommend bringing it. If not, there is usually someone around who can drive you to places. As for the potential issue of not knowing people, I didn’t face that problem at all. I’m not from Georgia and I have plenty of friends.
@collegetalk1010 You can pick your roommate if you want. If you can, I would recommend going to the admitted student day so you can meet potential roommates.
yes, its on the OPUS page
can you accept the financial aid package before you commit?
For those of you that mentioned you were deciding between Emory/Oxford and Tulane,…Did anyone come up with Tulane being more affordable than Emory as I did?
Has merit aid been awarded? Is that on the aid portal?
Did they send out an email regarding financial aid updates?
@Toeupwms : If Oxford only vs. Tulane, that just makes more sense. If Emory…depends.
Again, thank you Tennis Ninja for the information on the chemistry program. We will look into that. Toeupwms asks about affordability. My son was given a large scholarship to Tulane, which makes it way more affordable than Emory. Again, another factor to look at. Good luck to everyone.
@bernie12
Sorry! I don’t understand…can you please clarify your comment?
@Toeupwms : If you or person of interest was ONLY an Oxford admit and the other option was Tulane, I would expect Tulane to give a better financial aid package. If a person is an Emory College admit, that often comes out comparable or better than many schools except for its more immediate peers. Now I will say that if a person helps Tulane’s statistical range, they may scale their need-aid package to get that person whereas Emory is not necessarily as interested in that (those who it is ultra desperate to get but could not give one of the big Scholarships also get a Liberal Arts Scholarship and that selection usually isn’t stats oriented). With Emory College, the closer to 100k income, the less aid they give, but even considering that it is often decently competitive. Oxford is need aware and I don’t think pulls the same amount of resources to go towards need aid. I think they should, but it may not be that easy.
@bernie12
Thank you so much! I guess I was just surprised since it was nearly 20k difference from the net price calculator! Thanks for your help.
Is anyone else still waiting on FA? I was accepted to Oxford not Emory, if that helps.
