Same here @introtoxx ! They gave me 60k and I’m middle class as well. My aid was totally unexpected.
My son is - emory, not oxford.
My financial aid isn’t out yet, should I be concerned…?
I am too for Oxford. I wonder if it has something to do with alphabetical order, because my friend got his right away who was at the beginning of the alphabet.
@emoryhopeful10 I was accepted to both campuses, but my last name starts with H… if it was alphabetical, I think it would have been released by now
@sugasuga
Are you Emory or Oxford?
@Toeupwms got accepted to both, but i’m leaning towards emory
@sugasuga
Me too! Was your 60k for Emory or Oxford. My Oxford was drastically different! Lol
I still haven’t received my financial aid either, but they did recently ask me for more information so that is still processing.
@Toeupwms it was all grants, my stats deff weren’t good enough for any merit aid
Does anyone know how many people were wait listed from Emory? And what is the likelihood of getting in if I’m on it?
@Toeupwms i had no idea the financial aid was separate, the 60k is for emory. where do i find oxford’s aid?
@introtoxx
Emory or both?
@introtoxx : Most merit aid outside of Woodruff and related scholars is not stats based. Even that is barely stats based. More like “talent” and “adds something unique” based.
@whyamilikethis : Go to the collegeboard website. Emory’s actually is transparent about wait-list stats.
@bernie12 welp I guess im not talented and dont add anything unique but they still gave me good aid regardless!
@introtoxx : Now you know I didn’t mean it like that lol…I’m talking more like “spikey” people. Lots of those get the scholarships. Often the types that excelled to extremely high levels in like an area or two…and often folks who maybe fill some niche on campus that is often hard to yield/recruit.
@bernie12 I know I know haha im just messing around!
My son was accepted to both Emory and Oxford- but appears to have merit aid from neither. He has 1580 SAT, SAT2s of 800 for Math2 and Bio - a 4.167/4 - What the heck is the threshold for merit here?? He absolutely loves the school, but frankly it’s hard to swallow at 65K when he’s accepted to other schools that are just as good and would cost less. What’s the likelihood of having merit aid reevaluated?
@1sttimethrougj : Sadly, it probably isn’t gonna happen. Again, not stats based. They selected partly based upon stats (and there are lots of people with great stats that fall in last years 75% and those that have extremely high unweighted GPAs and close to top class ranks) but mainly a lot of other stuff (Emory is NOT using the scholars program to boost its statistical range. That seems to be happening naturally. In addition only like 25-35 or so Scholars yield a year out of a class ranging from 1350-1400. If they just wanted to boost the stats, they would invite and try to yield a lot more. That amount of high scoring students would do absolutely nothing to the range). They invited like 275 of 10k+ applicants. Were there extremely high caliber ECs that would make your son stand out among those who checked the box? The competition is pretty intense. I know people view Emory as an “underdog”, but its merit aid selection will work very similar to schools with higher statistical ranges (and note that Emory is no longer significantly less selective score wise than other schools since the new SAT…the top 25 or so schools are beginning to converge in terms of the students they yield at least), except that the score emphasis is less. When it comes to merit, it is every bit as competitive as said schools.
Are you out of range for need aid?
Yup. The only need-based aid we received was a 5k loan. He submitted his app in time to be considered for the scholars so we knew he didn’t get that, but I was a little surprised he didn’t get a liberal arts scholarship. He’s a national merit finalist- he runs a free coding class at the library for community kids- he is a section leader in the marching band and plays trumpet and french horn - he plays guitar and keyboards in a local band- he’s in student government. He showed interest - we were there in August.
He hasn’t cured cancer but he’s a very smart and, I think, well-rounded kid. I’m really not sure what else he could do to have hit whatever they’re looking for. Maybe his essays weren’t what they wanted? That seems rather capricious.
It’s very disappointing.
Thanks for listening.
