Emory University / Oxford College Class of 2023 Thread

Where did y’all find the financial aid package?

@“sai.1321” My Daughter’s package just showed up today. In opus under financial aid. Then it will say award information. This was not there yesterday.

Accepted to both Emory and Oxford

34 ACT
3.94 GPA uw

@Arkend can you please tell me how to check on fin aid? does it work on your phone?

@yoyo77777777 My daughter could not pull it up on her phone. I checked it on computer.

With an EFC of 0, Emory met every last penny of my financial need and I am overwhelmingly grateful.

Emory doesn’t pay for the expenses to Admitted Day right? Looking forward to going :slight_smile:

@ryandryu, they want you to go. You should contact the people who run this program through the registration website and ask them. If you are interested in the Outdoor Emory pre-orientation adventure retreat events (late August before move in day), there is a group that provides financial aid for that as well.

Anyone (alums, current students?) have an opinion on bringing a car freshman year at Oxford? My kid is already making her case…

@mamarivs Oxford freshman can bring their cars, Emory freshman cannot.

@emorynavy would you recommend it? My D was accepted at Oxford. Sometimes, having a car on campus can be more trouble than it is worth.

@mamarivs I went to Oxford. I would recommend it since there isn’t much to do at Oxford on the weekends.

@Sneedles

There might be something to that, I know that WashU is notorious for playing the yield game. My daughter had a perfect GPA and standardized test scores, fabulous extracurriculars, NMF, and was wait listed at WashU. We know other kids with identical profiles who were also rejected or wait listed there. The presumption is that kids with these profiles are using schools like Emory and Wash U as safety schools in case they don’t get into the Ivys, Chicago, Stanford, etc. It is rather strange. Daughter was accepted RD at Duke, Emory and Vanderbilt but wait listed at Wash U (and Chicago–didn’t apply to Stanford or Ivys).

It’s also true that selective schools are filling an ever increasing portion of their classes with early decision applicants–anywhere from 50-75 percent. But that strategy won’t work unless you are not concerned about a financial aid offer.

Rochester is a great school.

Emory doesn’t play “yield games” and the proof is in the pudding. Their RD yield is not that high. It’s uber competitive at the RD level and they don’t admit based on GPA and test scores. In fact, they want people whom they feel will contribute to the Emory community beyond getting great grades. I believe them when they say their goal is to build a strong class rather just assemble the smartest 1400 students.

@mamarivs I’m assuming you would drive down anyway to movin your D instead of flying, so shouldn’t be much trouble getting the car there. But the registration thing might be hard. But there’s not much to do around Oxford is in a rural part of GA. Like officially outside the metro Atl so I would want one. But if you feel as though your D could get into some trouble, or isn’t a great driver, that’s a judgement call.

@ljberkow

Glad to hear Emory doesn’t play the game. And while I agree that most of these elite universities could fill their classes with kids with perfect everything, they have chosen other strategies to make sure they have a well rounded group of kids. I can’t argue with the desirability of that. It’s hard for these kids to understand how they can get into some higher ranked schools but not lower ranked schools, or be rejected when admitted students have lower stats. It was confusing for my daughter that she was admitted RD to Duke but wait listed at WashU.

I know for a fact (as a St. Louisan with lots of WashU contacts) that WashU has pursued the yield strategy as it has worked tirelessly over the last 15 years to boost its national reputation and ranking. It’s worked. It doesn’t want to be seen as a regional university, which is why it’s harder for kids from St. Louis to get in.

got an email yesterday and it said fin aid will come by 6
