Wow and that includes ED.
@collegemom9
sure does.
RD acceptance rate would be around 10-12% for Emory and 15-17% for Ox.
They admitted 600 less applicants than they did last year and received 2,035 more applications. Considering, more ED1s were admitted, it looks like RD applicants felt the pain. In any case, the Class of 2023 will be smaller than the Class of 2022 unless a greater percentage accepts and actually enrolls than they expect. We’ll see where the dust settles, but it certainly looks right now as if they don’t want another class of 1,442 students.
@econmomto3 congrats on your daughter with Duke. That’s great stuff. None of this is an exact science and that’s why I hate seeing kids think less of themselves for not getting into these schools. These kids getting into Rochester who feel let down really need a weekend to consider that they are attending an elite university.
@econmomto3 : Eh, all of these schools are weird. It may hard to predict yield if you are WUSTL or Emory, but it is weird when VU, WUSTL, or Chicago turn down very high stats applicants as there is clearly a bias towards that at those. They very intentionally select very narrow ranges of ACT and SAT scores, so you never know with them. They clearly aren’t afraid to admit high stats applicants. I would argue that Vanderbilt has the best formula (of those ranked below 10 that emphasize stats more heavily than average) for both selecting and yielding the high stats students. It really is just a game. However, it isn’t fully stats based. I suspect some do try to feel out yield more than others though perhaps by figuring out if someone has other aspects on top of the stats that suggests they may fit and be admitted to a high yield competitor. Probably a lot of stuff that we can’t understand going into this.
The fact is, most elite (or relatively elite) schools outside of Ivies will be full of Ivy rejects, and IMHO that is okay as long as those students can seriously picture themselves enjoying whatever school they land at and really think beyond prestige among their choices, Being an Ivy reject never means “you weren’t good enough or don’t deserve to be admitted to those places” and more so means for a very large chunk of denied and wait-listed applicants that “you either didn’t seem to be a fit based on the way you crafted the application and/or were just unlucky, but at least you likely ended up at a place that is as good as some of the Ivies in many areas”. Minus maybe Caltech, MIT, and Stanford, no individual or school should be particularly ashamed of being associated with Ivy rejection as many of them end up performing like some of the Ivy/Ivy Plus schools outcomes wise anyway. I guess I never was from a background that allowed me to understand the “woe is me, I had to go to an amazing place that isn’t part of the Ivy Leagues because ya know, they’re all the same and only 4 non-Ivies are like them” lol. Nor should schools obsess over having incoming profiles that make them appear like certain other schools, especially if they aren’t going to be aggressive in ensuring that students have similar caliber or better educational experiences and challenges that lead to increasingly stellar outcomes. The few non-stats whore Ivy Plus schools (Duke and Stanford I believe) are doing very well in this arena yet some “newer” schools clearly want to use admissions to merely put on appearances. Damned shame, and it doesn’t help how this process is experienced by the applicants either.
I hope those kids admitted to Rochester eventually feel better too. It is a great school. These kids will excel wherever they go.
@emorynavy RD would be around 10-11%, ED2 at 15-18% and ED1 at 28% guesstimate from February on admit rates. Quite a difficult year. This admission office has a good reputation for being thorough. Though with these type of numbers, even highly qualified students are going to be rejected.
Thanks for your words of wisdom. We just heard from another school today and it was good news, so my daughter now has three good choices. Emory seemed like a great fit so it’s too bad. She emailed the admissions counselor who actually got back to her right away and said since they accepted half the class during early decision they only had 600 spots and 30,000 applications. That’s just incredible! I feel like there aren’t enough good schools for all these wonderful talented students.
could someone please help me and explain how to find my financial aid award in opus? please?
@yoyo77777777
login to Opus, you should see a large template box called financial services.
@emorynavy i do see it, but there is no info regarding my aid award…
@Yssej3 Your AO was corrct. Emory had very competive admissions this year. But they did not receive 30,000 apps for 600 spots. 30,000 is the number of total apps received which included ED and ED2.
has any international student recieved their FA award in opus? they said that FA will be available on march 22nd 6pm est but i haven t recieved mine
Waitlisted at Oxford w/ 30 ACT & 1360 SAT
@TheTennisNinja or anyone who knows Emory well.
My D got admitted into Oxford and no scholarship given. So far BU gave admission with $20K Presidential scholarship. Does Emory match other college scholarships?
If Emory gives some scholarship or admission into Emory main campus, she certainly would like to goto Emory.
Any guidance on this aspect will be greatly appreciated.
@DSOF20192023
Oxford does match but usually only with peer schools. But you can try anyway.
I would ask the financial aid office re matching (I think Boston Univ is pretty much a peer school) but if your daughter was only admitted to the Oxford Campus and not the Emory campus she can not change to the Emory campus. Emory and Oxford have separate admissions teams and you can not change campuses post acceptances. That said, my daughter who is now a junior also wanted to start on the Atlanta campus and ended up at Oxford. Like many Oxford students she ended up far preferring her Oxford classes to her Emory classes. The academics at Oxford are really great and the small community is wonderful too. Congrats to your daughter!
is it better to call the financial aid office or email your financial aid officer when asking for more assistance / money?
i think i’m gonna decline the waitlist
@emorynavy it is good to know Emory matches scholarship from peer colleges. Do you think W&L would be considered as a peer? In niche Emory ranked 27th and W&L 36th.
