**EMORY UNIVERSITY RD DISCUSSION CLASS OF 2021**

Accepted to Emory, didn’t apply to oxford. In order to qualify for any type of scholarship did you need to apply by Nov. 15th? Or is that only for the scholars program?

So what percentage of waitlisted students does Emory usually accept? Should I expect to hear back in May?

Just heard i got waitlisted and I feel sick to my stomach! I thought I had good stats (36 ACT, 4.0 GPA, challenging senior year course load, 4 year varsity athlete for 2 sports, VP of NHS, retreat leader, student ambassador, good letters of rec etc etc). I’ve already been accepted to other comparable if not more competitive schools (Notre Dame, BC Honors, Wash U in STL). In retrospect, I could’ve worked harder on my essays for Emory and shown a teensy bit more demonstrated interest (i mean I wasn’t able to visit but I went to an informational session), but I still am shocked. I am now even more worried about the upcoming March 31/April 1 decision releases!! (sorry if this sounds pretentious or annoying)

I’m sorry if my above post sounds pretentious lol I’m just in shock right now I was really hoping for a congrats letter

Mogmm17 - do not lose faith - you have already been accepted to some wonderful schools and as I peruse the many posts it does seem that many students with high stats were not accepted. I truly believe that Emory may believe it was a “safety” for these students and chose to waitlist them assuming those truly interested might accept the waitlist. My child was also waitlisted 1520/1600 SAT and 3.8 unweighted GPA all honors and AP classes - never visited and actually forgot the decision came out today - so although annoyed by the waitlist - it was never a high priority school which Emory may have rightly discerned. Congratulations to all accepted - for those who weren’t may you find the college of your dreams!

Hey everyone! Current first-year at Emory here! I heard decisions came out today and wanted to make sure everyone was okay on here, lol. I will also be a host for Essence of Emory, so maybe I will see some of you in a couple of weeks. If anyone has any questions about the school I would be more than happy to answer them!!

Accepted to both Oxford College and Emory College

Received a $20,000 per year Liberal Arts Scholarship if I attend Oxford

2160 Old SAT (Single sitting)
~4.1 weighted GPA, 5 APs, HORRIBLE Senior Course Load (Women’s Studies was my hardest class)

EC’s: Own two businesses, one with ~$70,000 in revenue and another with over $30,000, other misc. business stuff (really, the only standout thing on my App.) President of a service club, too.

White Male

Essays: Wrote last minute lol - literally started an hour before the deadline, still thought they were pretty good 7/10 though.

Accepted: UCLA, UCSD, UW, Tulane w/ 24k a year merit, UCI, UW,

Waitlisted: Colby College

Denied: Notre Dame, Washington U. in St. Louis

Awaiting: Most of the ivies, Berkeley, USC, Rice, Stanford, Duke, CMC, few others

Really excited to have been accepted with such a significant scholarship - UCLA was my #1 that I’ve gotten into yet, but this might be a very heavy contender with the inclusion of scholarship… find out about CMC tomorrow, wish me luck, friends.

have financial aid packages been released yet? does anyone know when they will be or how to access them?

Financial aid must be on friday

S was accepted to both Oxford and Emory - and is thrilled! - it is now at the top of his list as he waits for final decisions next week. Quick Stats: ACT: 34 GPA:3.8 UW, really strong essays and recs - 9-10/10. No hooks, white male - maybe he fit the slot for a Texan? Congrats to all who got in, and those who did not, you will find you spot!

I often use the analogy of “making a salad” as a model to explain the college admission officers’ role. These people are making a “salad” of “right mixes” according to their “recipes, culture,” IF Emory is a Chicken-Walnut-Apple Salad, then even the best cut of Wagyu beef won’t make it on the plate. The same goes with the composition of the “salad.” They can’t possibly put a whole plate full of meat and not enough greens. When I look at Emory Application Essays, I notice they are working very hard to screen out people with generic answers. It is tough to write something substantial with 150 words; let alone to show your passion, your personality. From the people I know who got into Emory, there is a general agreement the admissions review is far more than just numbers. I “think” there is a broad range of scores, but it seems the real big item on the selection process is - character, community service, along with academics (I probably would rank these as the level of importance as well). Students who spend many hours on serving the community - have projects that can demonstrability make a difference to others who are less fortunate - can compensate a weaker GPA or lower test scores. In sum, the whole process is not about a judgment on who is the best, but rather who is the best fit for the culture and the ecosystem of Emory. JMHO.

Have a student who has all the highest stats possible and who formed a national organization. Has won character awards, amazing recommendations and has overcome an incredible life hurdle just to be able to go to college. Emory waitlisted this student and I’m sorry but it’s definitely not because they lack character or weren’t the right ingredient in a salad. Sometimes the truth is these schools screw up and they assume a fabulous kid is going to an ivy so they waitlist them . Emory only took in 26% of acceptance last year and perhaps they are trying to weed out who is using them as a back up.
These kids are struggling so much over this- I’m not sure it’s wise to have them think their character is faulty when actually this process is flawed st best and these school’s are at the end- a business. Thekids beat themselves up enough.

@BigflowerSusie Well stated. Completely agree with you.

Maybe the kid as you describe has such high stats and quality will get into the Ivies and no need to beat him/herself up on being waitlisted by a “backup” school. I’ve seen in various threads, parents blame the system (too many in-state, so OOS impossible - didn’t demo. interests, that’s why - Oh, they are weeding out the Ivy backups… etc etc…). Fact of the matter, these people are picking the kids fit for their needs. It is never about who is the best, but rather who is the best fit. I’d bet the same conversations will appear again and again in 2018, 2019… happens every year. JMHO.

I got waitlisted, and I really want to go. Is there anyway to increase your chances of getting in waitlisted? Also, how many students do tend to get in off of the waitlist?

The waitlist FAQ is here - https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjk7p_LxO_SAhXOdSYKHVEMB6UQFggaMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.emory.edu%2Fadmission%2Fadmission%2Fdecisions%2Fwaitlist_faq.pdf&usg=AFQjCNGw10hig78y4aaC9XviODhT25nBiQ&bvm=bv.150729734,d.eWE - hope it helps.

My son was rejected from Emory College and waitlisted for Oxford College. He is a double legacy, both his father and I completed both our undergraduate and graduate degrees at Emory. He also has an aunt who graduated from Emory and a grandfather who is retired med school faculty. He had a 34 on the ACT [one sitting], a 3.7 unweighted at a rigorous private school, 9 aps and decent ecs including 2 varsity sports and founding a club that advocates for LGBT rights. I realize that legacy admissions can be a touchy subject, but we are absolutely shocked. Would it be improper to contact admissions and ask for an explanation? We have a younger child and do not want to burn any bridges.

What time will financial aid come out today?

@marlin98 They said 3pm

@bernesemtnmama Presumably, your son was rejected during the regular decision process. He didn’t apply early decision I or II, I assume? Had your son demonstrated interest in Emory and Oxford or could it be perceived that he wasn’t that interested? Had he already demonstrated interest in Oxford College?

Let me suggest approaching it this way. If your son is very interested in attending Oxford College, let them know that he is. I think it’s important that he communicate that fact himself. For example, he might say that Oxford College is his first choice (that he would attend if admitted) and give them updates about his accomplishments this semester. During this, he could mention how it’s always been his dreamHad he already demonstrated interest in Oxford College? , etc. in part because of all the wonderful experiences his family has had at the school, etc.

It’s unclear to me how and what role alumni parents should play so as to aid this process.
