Emory v. William and Mary

Which one would be better for poli sci, govt, public policy, and/or IR? I am having such difficulty deciding between the two. i need advice.

I dont know much about William and Mary but its prob a much smaller school than Emory. I think that Emory would give you more opportunities.

For poli sci, govt, and other fields related to those you mentioned, William and Mary would give you more opportunities than Emory would. Emory is just known for its medicine. I have two friends who will be attending William and Mary for political science and they are psyched for the opportunities they will have there. Time is running out! Hope you make the right choice.

If you are a poli sci major at Emory, you would have the option of interning in the Carter Center or at CNN. You won't find those kind of opportunities at William and Mary.

Interning in the Carter Center or at CNN is a dream.

No dream.....it is fairly common.

06collegebound, you have written 6 posts, all of them negative toward Emory, including your profoundly inaccurate "Boston has been revered by the world for centuries while Emory is just a growing school" post" and now this also inaccurate "Emory is just known for its medicine" post. Since you seem to be such an authority on Emory, can you share with us where you get your information?

Want to make a bet that 06collegebound is "related" to DadBGF? Both have only a handful of posts, all on the Emory forum, all negative.....

Yeah, no kidding, I was looking at that too, as well as the new jtpeter2 who also has four posts, all negative toward Emory. jtpeter2 coincidentally joined CC today along with DadBGF. "DadBGF" says
I agree with jtpeter2. If you want to major in PS, no need to discuss!!!"
Right. What Dad uses multiple exclamation points and says silly things like "no need to discuss"? Dad, peter and collegebound sure do agree with each other a lot. Maybe somebody got waitlisted at Emory and is trying to thin the competition...LOL

Yes, these "3" posters have a motivation which could include any of the following:

Bitter applicant - rejected?

Desires others to reject Emory to open up a waitlist spot

Bitter alum who blames EMory for failures

Beware of another user name

yes everyone. itpeter2, dadbgf, and i are all related. i admit. we are all related. beware of another user name. and those of who decided to make a myspace on the same date as i am are all related to me, too. and yes hopeful1, you are correct. I belong to number 1. you are amazingly good.

More to the point, 06collegebound, "you" have written 6 high-charged posts with not one single fact to back up anything you have said. All opinion and all negative. So, yeah, some of us are wondering what your purpose is here.

06collegebound,

I assume you have been accepted to school. Have you decided where you will attend? I am sorry that things did not work out with Emory. This was one tough year for admissions at many schools throughout the nation!
I would suggest putting Emory in your past and move ahead in your future pursuits. I bet if you channel your energy towards your future that you will be much happier and will be able to focus on important positive aspects of your life.
Good luck!!!

thank you hopeful1. i did not mean to offend anybody or to criticize emory; i have no reason to do so. i have better things to do. it is just that i just want to help other students who are in the same situation as i am in, trying to decide between Berkeley and Rice. a good samaritan i guess. and to tell you the truth, i did not even apply to emory for the cost is unbearable for my family. i thank you for your understanding.

p.s. neither dadbgf nor jtpeter2 is related to me. i assume they belong to number 3 according to your list.

THANKS for your honesty. If you want to be a Good Samaritan and help others on this website, it would really help by providing balanced information without bias as opposed to your emotional reactions.

I'm glad you guys used my post to just fight over who is credible and who is not. I asked and expected relevant information to my current problem. I visited W&M and Emory. W&M is clearly the best pick FOR ME. At Emory, I felt as if the population was extremely "jappy" and wasn't as intellectual. I also researched the political science departments' outputs of students on to graduate schools, etc., and W&M clearly surpassed Emory in all aspects, which surprised me a little. It just goes to show that personal opinions matter most... and numbers sometimes do. Just because Emory is higher up on the U.S. News Report than W&M does not make it a better school. W&M has history, more so of Harvard in some respects (W&M has the oldest functioning academic building in the US architected by Wren who built Trinity College (part of Oxford University) in Cambridge, UK), and specifically a poly sci history surpassing that, in my opinion, of all schools in the US, pumping out more politicians only third to Harvard and Yale. If you haven't already realized, I have chosen W&M. Thanks for your help.

So that's great then...sounds like you answered your own question. Enjoy W&M! :)

I believe the poster above who said, "interning in the Carter Center or at CNN is a dream" was being facetious. Keep in mind that W&M has the Reeves Center for politics.

I know some people who chose between Emory and W&M and in the end chose Emory because of its more prominent "brand" name and better concentration options. Emory is hardly only for medicine, although its pre-med program is top notch, its hospital is one of the best in the country and its CDC connected labs develop ground breaking treatments. Emory's business school is just as accomplished as the med school, and the law school is well known (and back on track). W&M gives you more of a liberal arts feel, and if you want that atmosphere you would like it more. W&M is also much more of a traditional southern school. On the other hand, Emory is a research driven school backed by a top 10 endowment and ever increasing rankings with students from all over the US.

Emory is more prominent? Are you deluded by the hype or just another Northerner who got sold a bill of goods by some slick Atlanta or Durham marketer? Check out this list when you get a chance:
