Thanks for bringing this thread up again mas?

Every school gives a similar list, with different facts of course.

W&M is a good school, but it simply isn't as prestigious as Emory. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but some people care more about prestige than anything else.

Are you baiting me? Emory doesn't have any academic firsts. It doesn't even have any sports teams. Heck, without Coca Cola, it wouldn't even have an endowment! Can you say s-u-p-e-r-f-i-c-i-a-l? What are you talking about? Your school is for people who got rejected at NYU.

Both are fine schools.
If you want to compare schools by statistics for what its worth:

Emory has a higher ranking (US News)
Emory has a higher peer assessment
Emory is more selective
Emory grad schools overall are highly ranked and regarded (law, business and medicine)

Emory is fortunate to have a large endowment which funds superb facilities, resources, lower prof: student ratio

Emory is not known for sports but does have some excellent Div 3 programs in swimming and tennis.

FYI, NYU and Emory are very different schools.

Yes, W & M was one of the first colleges in the US and is a fine public university. Personally, I prefer U of Michigan as a public university.

US News is your authority? The "Peer" criteria is a soft metric which favors private schools. Hard numbers are the only objective resource. W&M's SAT average is 1390 and HS class rank is close to 90%. What is Emory's? I rest my case.

If W and M is more selective than UVA and Michigan does it make it a better school? According to you it does.
To each his own.

The only case you have is denial. "No more soup for you"

Do I sense an inferiority complex?

i remember hearing about the college of william and mary back when i visited Thomas Jefferson's home in 4th grade...maybe I am just weird, but up in Illinois, you really dont hear much about william and mary, although i am sure it is an amazing school. Emory has more name recognition in Chicago (besides the historical aspect), although this is probably because more out of state students go to Emory than william and mary, which is public.

Prestigious colleges and universities are almost all old; even "old world." They were created at the same time our nation was created, and have been a major part of the educational landscape. Their cornerstones are much more likely to be inscribed "1690" than "1960." At the same time, this sense of tradition and permanence is balanced by a spirit of innovation. While they may be 1600-something institutions, they are 21st-century players.

From http://www.universitybusiness.com/page.cfm?p=411

By your logic Rutgers (1766) must be the 8th most prestigious school in the country.

U of Chicago is 'young' (born 1893) compared to its peers and has prestige.
By the way, I dont think mas was saying all old schools are prestigious, but was saying that a greater # of prestigious schools are old. and i dont think he was saying that a school age ranking is the same as its prestige ranking.

You guys should definitely go to law school!

Yes, I was being partly facetious in my response.

i dont know if you were talking to me, but i plan on it.

"US News is your authority? The "Peer" criteria is a soft metric which favors private schools. Hard numbers are the only objective resource. W&M's SAT average is 1390 and HS class rank is close to 90%. What is Emory's? I rest my case."

90% of Emory's students are in top 10% of class.

The average SAT is ~1400 give or take 5 points.

Good job resting your case.

im sorry but W&M sucks, i live in cali and not one person i know has heard of that school! its lame!

William and Mary has an SAT average of 1390? What is your source? Collegeboard.com shows their average to be 1350 on the SAT. Collegeboard shows Emory having average SAT 1385.

By the way, US news rankings is a formula of numbers. So, the ranking is "hard numbers".

Why criticize Emory, and stupidly enough, do it in the Emory forum? What's the point? Both William and Mary and Emory are good schools. Your success will be determined by your person not your institution.

The W&M average of 1390 is based on the 2005 numbers available on the W&M website. Latest US News ranking uses 2004 numbers.

"Peer assessment" is a "soft" metric by anyone's definition. This is one of the variables in the composite ranking.

The name of this thread is "W&M vs. Emory." That title begs for balanced commentary.

Established Southern Schools (founded by educators, generals, religious leaders & statesmen):

-Davidson, Georgetown, UNC, Virginia, W&L, W&M

Nouveau Southern Schools (founded by Coca Cola dealers, robber barons & tobacco moguls):

-Duke, Emory, Hopkins*, Rice, Vanderbilt, Wake

I had no idea the Methodist Church - which started Emory - consisted not of "religious leaders" but were, in fact, "Coca Cola dealers."

It's gotta be tough to be associated with wonderful school with a rich tradition and not be able to enjoy it without spreading lies and misstatements about other wonderful schools... I'm sure that there are some professionals to help with that, Macs. Or a nice, bright, shiny new car to compensate.
