I'm willing to answer questions as well as I can. I am a first-year (thus, freshman) engineering student in the School of Engineering on the New Brunswick campus.

how are the dorms for engineering students specifically the bathroom arrangement haha. the whole floor shares one bathroom? the bathroom has stalls for showers?

What type of engineering are you going for? How’s the BAMM dorms?

I live in Barr, by the way.

met4life: Well, the engineering dorms (Barr and Mattia) are all formatted the same way as the other two BAMM dorms (Allen and Metzger). There are two bathrooms on each floor, female and male, although since Mattia is an all-male dorm, I guess both would both be for males. On my floor, the girl’s bathroom has five toilet stalls and four shower stalls. (It’s really nice to be a girl when it comes to bathrooms, haha.)

cerps243: I’m going for chemical/biochemical engineering. The BAMM dorms are really good for making friends and everyone is pretty much taking the same classes so it’s super convenient. (If you live in an engineering dorm, that is.) It does sometimes get loud, but I figure that’s just how it is in college. I’ve learned to sleep through a lot of stuff, haha.

Koto: I’ll be going for computer engineering… is it pretty much a standard set of classes all freshmen engineering students take or are your courses different from what mine would be? If they are the same, could you tell me about the classes you are taking? (difficulty, professor, times, etc.)

Hey koto, when did you apply and what are your stats?

cerps343: Freshman year engineers at Rutgers basically take the same classes, minus classes one has tested out of/into. For you, you would actually also take a lot of the same classes as other electrical engineers and specialize in computer engineering electives/courses in your junior/senior year.
I’m in the honors program, so my schedule may be different than yours if you’re not in it.

On page 13, you can find the regular engineering curriculum for freshman. I can tell you about my schedule if you are interested, though.

jokerg908: Honestly, I applied maybe half a week before the priority deadline. I would prefer not to give out my stats, but let’s say they were sufficient for a substantial scholarship. :)

I got accepted to school of engineering and my two friends got accepted to SAS and buisness. Is it possible to get a same dorm room so we could be roommates? Thank you.

As long as the other person isn’t honors or will forgo honors housing (McCormick Suites) and you will forgo engineering housing (Barr and/or Mattia), yes, it is possible for two of you to be roommates. (I don’t know of any triples…)

As an engineer, though, I recommend to try for dorming on Busch, because I know a few engineers and science majors from Cook/Douglass and their commute is insane. College Ave is not bad and neither is Livingston. Living on Busch is just really convenient because most of your classes with be there.

so two of us can live in Busch right? Thank you so much!!

Yup and you’re welcome.

yo koto, i’m also an engineering student, first year. the thing is, i commute. I don’t have enough money to pay for room and board…well, here’s my story:

parents are paying for it, main education

parents want to save money, makes sense

i only live 30 minutes away from rutgers…and they let me drive an '06 honda accord-- not bad either

if i really really want to dorm they said to take 12k for it and go

if i did that, i would have 48k of debt. so i’m holding off for my first year.

so yeah. just wanted to say hello. and if anyone has to commute to rutgers–i can shed some light.

eep, that’s tough, but I heard it does get better from a few upperclassmen, especially since you can drive. (I know a few commuters who can’t; I couldn’t believe it!)

unfortunately, I heard the housing lottery isn’t very open to commuters anymore. you can’t just hop in with a friend who has a good lottery number; you have to be put on a waitlist. try your hardest to get to the top of that waitlist if you want to dorm next year!

but, yay, another perspective on all things rutgers engineering.

quick bump for all accepted and enrolling students. (I am still active.)

even if i am going into the school of engineering… can i opt out of housing in engineer specific dorms?

Also, if i may want to do engineering would it be better to start off in the school of engineering then switch out if i dont like it or start off SAS and go into engineering?

Thanks!

Yes, when you fill out the housing application form, just don’t click on the Special (Honors) Housing checkbox.

It’s easier to switch out of engineering than into, just because the requirements are so different. If you start in it and switch out, the SAS credits are easier to fill. I’ve seen some people switch into engineering and they had to makeup a lot of ground.

haha wow thanks for the help… i really didnt want to live with only engineers and i want to try to get on college ave haha…

Also, as far as placement tests go… I scored over 600 on the CR of SAT so i dont have to take the english, but the math is required correct? Any suggestions or preparing?

That’s fine; I know of a few engineers who live in College Ave and they seem to be fine. (and oops! I didn’t mean honors in the last post; that was strange.)

Yes, the math placement is required unless you already have AP Calculus placement right now. (If you are taking it this May, that doesn’t count; you’ll still have to take the placement.) What math class are you in now? I remember the math placement being extremely easy. The hardest parts were basic trigonometry and some really basic logarithms and exponentials.

I am in honors pre-calc and have around a 94 out of 99

You’ll be fine; don’t worry about the placement test. Just show up and get it done~
