I guess not giving a crap about the general ed classes screwed me in the end. I have a 4.0 major, I assumed I was going to get accepted everywhere I applied because of that. Either that or not much extra curriculars. Maybe I should of mentioned I have pretty much had a full time job the whole time in school? Ohh well I had UCSB at the top anyways

Well, I completed all prereqs that my school offered unless there was a time conflict. So a few examples would be MatLab, Materials Science, and Circuits. I meant to state that I completed whatever I could in the time I was at my CC.

I understand your situation as I think everyone with engineering as their major has the same problem with pre reqs. The majority of CC’s do not offer a lot of those engineering classes, so I would hope they could overlook that when looking at admissions. I got into 2 UCs, but also got rejected from 2 as well as you can see in my post above.

UCLA and UCB did say the reason I was rejected was major prep.

ok, for engineer majors, are we supposed to go out and search for pre-reqs that are not even offered at our school and try to satisfy every pre-req??

@asd i guess it kinda depends on how many Engineering classes your scholl offers. But if they have the basic (statics, dynamics, circuits) i wouldnt worry about going to other schools.

Mechanical Engineering major
UC GPA: 3.67
Major GPA 4.00

Strengths
Chemistry student of the year at SBCC
4.0 Engr GPA

Weaknesses
A couple C’s and in math courses and B’s in English classes prior to taking school seriously hurt my GPA.
Not the strongest personal statement
Very little extracurriculars

Accepted:
UCB
UCSB (with TAG)

Rejected:
Cal Poly Slo (this was my first choice)

Still not sure If I want to go to Berkeley or UCSB

Since many of you guys got accepted to good schools, would you guys mind sharing your schedules? I am starting CC this summer/fall, and I would like to know what schedule and classes I should be trying to get.

Also, how many years were you guys at CC? I really want to transfer in 2

@ gawdzillah, it depends how advanced you are in math and science. Meaning, if you have AP credits for calc, physics and chem then you’ll transfer faster but if you don’t then it might take on average 2-3 years at a CC but you could still do it in two years if you take 16-18 units a semester and take 2-3 classes during summer school, so it really depends on you. Engineering is very demanding and requires the most units completion out of all majors so don’t feel bad if it takes you 3 yrs.
Also, CSULB accepts engineering transfers with a minimum of 12 units completed in the major, so you can actually transfer there in one year if you’d like.

What classes do you recommend taking over the summer? Unfortunately I can’t take any chem or physics over the summer because my school doesn’t offer it.

I don’t a lot of ap credit, just for Calc AB, US govt, and possibly chemistry

Computer Science/EECS
GPA: ~3.7-3.8
IGETC: No
Pre-Reqs: Yes
Applied and Accepted: UCSC, UCI, UCSD, UCB

Gawdzillah: My schedule looked like this…
Fall Semester: Calc 2, Physics 1 (Calc), English 1, Comp Sci 1 (C++)
Spring Semester: Chem 101, Psych 101, Discrete Structures, Multivariate Calc, Linear Algebra (Three maths at once is a TERRIBLE idea, btw)
(moved CCs)
Summer Quarter: Physics B (Calc) (also a bad idea)
Fall Quarter: English 1B, Physics C (Calc), Differential Equations
Winter Quarter: English 1C, Comp Sci 2 (Java), Intro to C#, Elementary Statistics
Spring Quarter: Physics D (Calc), Intro to Circuits, Data Structures (Java)

The best thing you can do for scheduling is to look at assist.org, pre-reqs are super important. Also, get math done early, it helps a lot in other classes.

@failure622
I am going to take Multivariable Calc and Comp Sci A at Cal this summer…I do not have a good feeling about it after seeing your words…think I really need to work my butt off to get good grades…I am also having three math classes this semester and it is awesome…

Thanks for the schedule, really gives me a better idea.

Can you explain why taking physics B was such a bad idea? Also, how are you taking physics 1 while taking calc 2? At my local cc, calc 2 is a pre req for physics 1. Meaning if I don’t take the summer session and just start during the fall semester with calc 2, Ill have 3 semesters to take physics 1-4, which is impossible =/

izza: Most of my ECs were from high school. Things like math club, robotics, marching band, etc. And a few girl scout related things and volunteer work. Nothing too special. I finished every pre-req I could, I think I was missing a few of Berkeley’s hard to find ones.

Username: Sounds like we may have a class together! Not sure why my words would scare you, I’m in the same boat as you right now, not really sure what to expect at Cal. ^^;

Gawdzillah: I struggle with E&M, so the accelerated pace that comes with summer session made it difficult. Very time consuming, and having no time to really study and process the material didn’t help. It wasn’t impossible or anything, just would have been a lot better to take during a normal quarter. If you need four though, sounds like it could be your only option. Unless you want to double up on physics (ick) or see if your school will let you take it without Calc 2. Of course, classes vary from one school to another, so you could be perfectly fine with summer physics. (Oh, I took Physics 1 in Maryland, pre-req (co-req?) was Calc 1 I believe.)
