England MT programs

I’m desperately trying to find more information on Guildford School of Acting & LIPA (Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts). My daughter got an acceptance to both…but I’m having reservations on these schools as I don’t know anything about them & I’m not having any luck finding information on them on the internet.

If anyone has experienced these two schools…please share!

What’s it like to go to school there? Do the native British students not care for the American students? How selective are they? Do they basically take anyone? Was it crazy expensive to live there? What was it like after you graduated? Could you stay there or did you have to return home as soon as you graduated? How often did you get to come back to the states for visits while in school? Would you recommend either of these schools?

I would super appreciate any insight anyone can offer! Thank you so much!

My daughter has a friend at LIPA I will see if I can get contact info for you and message you. From what I have heard and seen she absolutely loves it there and has had lots of opportunities both in and out of class… Her entire group gets along so there have been no issues there… She has come home only at Christmas and part of summer each year. She was an extremely independent child so I think she likely would have thrived anywhere! Hopefully someone with direct information can help.

I can only speak to LIPA but they do not accept everyone, my daughter auditioned but did not get in.

We have a friend who graduated this past May from Rose Bruford and because he is an American citizen, he was not allowed to stay. He was pretty devasted. Also, while he was allowed to get a retail type job while there, he was not allowed to work in any theatres, only theatre work within the school, in case that makes a difference to your student.

Thank you so much for your responses! It’s not much but it’s a start. I can’t believe how hard it is to find information on studying musical theater in England or abroad. To Boilermom…is your child a HS senior this year or are they already in college? Where did your child end up going?

Here are some past threads with discussions that may help:

@laddie8 my daughter is a senior this year

@laddie8 I don’t have any recent information about those schools but I can tell you that graduates are not permitted to stay in the country to work. They also will not be able to perform, in many cases, outside of school while there. My D has worked in London for many years now but she had the ability to locate there after graduating from Tisch (and working in the U.S. for a year) due to an ancestry visa. Without that, no student should be planning on that possibility. It has been that way for as long as my D has been there (11 years now) so a student who is devastated about not being able to stay, clearly didn’t research it before attending. It’s good that you are! I can also say that, yes, it is very expensive to live there. The British pound is somewhere around $1.30 U.S. at the moment.
