Hi,
My son was excepted for computer science. We are from OOS .We have visited campus and he likes the school. Our state is small and does not offer the quality of program that I assume Cal Poly has and that is why he applied .Can someone give me some advice about the computer science program?I have a several questions. What do students or alumni think about the quality of the degree from Cal Poly and is it worth the high cost?It could cost up to $150K to complete his degree.Housing seems a problem for freshman. It appears that they put students in triples.I veiwed these rooms and most students do not use thier roooms other than sleep because of the over crowding.I have other questions and will ask them in this thread latter. Thank you!

I’m not sure it’s worth $150K. What would a CS degree at your best state college cost? If a big difference, I’d be inclined to save. Anyone else?

I would say - the aid he would get it would cost maybe 40k tops.A problem is the quality of his degree and the internships leading to future employment and earning potential. Also my son does not care for the school.

I think it’s worth it. Be frugal, and keep in mind that if he lives in california for a while, he can establish residency and pay the in-state tuition.

The CS degree from Cal Poly is one of the most respected in the United States. Cal Poly is ranked second in the entire country for CS for schools whose highest degree is a masters: [Computer | Rankings | US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/engineering-computer)

There is no problem with the quality of the degree, internships, or future employment and Cal Poly grads earn the highest starting salaries of any public California school. Even higher than Berkeley.

If your kid does not care for the school then he should not attend. Nothing could be worse than forcing your kid to go to a school he does not like especially if he is OOS and far from home. Reject the offer and let another kid who is on the wait list desperately hoping to get in have a chance.

I’m oos state too. I get some financial aid, not sure how much since I’m fortunate that my parents are taking care of all of that for me, but I doubt it’s costing me anywhere near 150k. Otherwise my parents would not have let me come here in the first place. It’s a large reason why as an out of stater I chose Cal Poly and not a UC. Yes, you can try to establish residency, but it’s not easy. I think it used to be simpler, but they really cracked down on it cause they want your money obviously. In the last four years, I’ve known a few people who have tried to get residency and got rejected for the most minor details. Cal Poly is a great school to go to for engineering, and there are many companies that recruit engineering majors (including computer science) for internships. It’s crazy how some of these recruiters talk to the engineers at the career fairs. It’s almost like they want the students more than the students want an internship with them lol. Ok, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, since obviously the students want the internships and jobs, but you get what I mean, students are in high demand. I heard that oos students are also less likely to be placed in a triple.

We are also OOS and have 2 kids attending Cal Poly, so twice the cost. But with a few small scholarships, it’s less than $30K/yr per kid for us, which we feel is reasonable for a quality education from Cal Poly (both kids are engineering majors). Also, both of my kids got into the Honors Program as freshman, which guaranteed them housing at Cerro Vista, which was their first choice since they wanted a private room. So there are ways to avoid the triple. Good luck with your decision!

I think we’re dealing with a ■■■■■ here. @wayold isn’t a parent, just a high school student, according to this post - [College Confidential - Search Results](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/search.php?searchid=45672190&pp=15&page=2)

Note also the inconsistencies. @wayold’s 1st post says “We have visited campus and he likes the school.” Next post says “Also my son does not care for the school.”

I agree, I think this thread has run its course.
