Exeter Course Help

I would love to do AP English and Bio. A term in either the Bahamas or Stratford, England sound really effing awesome.

I’m actually not sure about whether to take Physics or not. I love Physics (because I will get to study Astronomy later on fufufufu~), but my goal is to become a psychologist in the future, which means I will need to study Biology… But I’m not that much into human body/cells/DNA/marine life/etc etc. D:
Chemistry’s pretty alright with me.

So I learned I could take music courses for no credit! I can audit them. Would that be a smart or stupid move as it would still be adding to my workload without contributing to my diploma?

Well, on one hand it would wise to take it in prep year since the work is not as much as the other years, but on the other hand it just takes away time from your schedule. However, if it is a music instrument or voice training that you really want to do then go ahead.

don’t audit music classes

first of all, auditing is a really difficult process (you have to submit a form and stuff), and it’s only worth auditing classes you really want to take but for no credit. Generally senior year stuff

as to science, if you ever plan on doing chem319 (AP and intro chem in 1 year), do physics first. you can always do bio later

exeter really gives you the flexibility to take what you’re interested in, so choose what you like, and don’t worry about the APs and stuff. individual courses will help you prepare for standardized exams. for example, for the math AP, my friends in 451 have classes 5 times a week. after the exam, the course will meet 3 times a week.

another example is that I am in introductory physics right now (theoretically covers SAT II material), and there are bonus workshops organized by all the teachers to cover material that gets glanced over in our curriculum that may appear on the test

Chem 319/400 = AP chem

Physics 400s = AP physics

Math 430/431 = AB calc

Math 451/450 = BC calc

Bio 400s = AP bio

US history is standard, can’t really say if it’s AP or not though

On a side note, I’m hyperventilating right now. I just finished an exam and I have a lump in my stomach (like I always do) when I’m done. Now it’s worse than before since I know that if my grades fall, my admission could be rescinded. And that would suck.

What sequence of sciences would you recommend a new lower to take if he/she wanted to squeeze in an advanced course but not completely murder herself?

What did you take in ninth grade / are taking?

I’m taking earth science (honors) right now. required in our curriculum >.<

as a new lower, you should either take bio or physics.

taking introductory physics allows you to do chemistry 319, which is ap/intro chem packed into 1 year

taking intro chem is a waste of time in my opinion, but I have friends who take it. I just feel that since a 2 year in 1 course is offered, one shouldn’t slack off and spend 2 years learning what can be covered in 1…

the thing is, you’ll probably have to do all 3 sciences since earth science is not one of the 3 “core” sciences which you need credits for

Thanks, seikuu! It says that you have to excel in physics and math and fill out an application in order to get into chem 319, though, so taking the course isn’t guaranteed, right? also, do you have friends who took physics first year, or are taking chem 319? have they said anything about the difficulties of the courses?

and finally, would you recommend taking two sciences as a new lower (principles of bio and intro chem)? thanks!!

asdfjkl; I really want to take an advanced science course at exeter, but so far my chances of doing so are really slim. I’d either have to double or work my butt off to do well in physics and math, which are my worst subjects. ahhhhh

actually, i have another idea: Do you guys think that if I took an introductory summer course at somewhere like CTY, I’d be really for an advanced course at Exeter? thank you :)

by excel in physics and math it means you need to get above B+ (average) in both

I’m doing physics as a new lower and I’m doing ap chem next year. A lot of the people who like science generally do physics then AP chem, usually physics in the prep/lower year and ap chem in the year after that

you could do two sciences as a new lower but most new students generally do electives. I actually did 5 electives this year (1 fall term, 2 winter, 2 now-spring) since I took chinese (language > 330), passed, and dropped it. so I devoted the rest of my lower year to fulfilling requirements so I can take courses I enjoy in my upper and senior year.

doing all 3 sciences doesn’t mean doing all 3 intro courses, I think there are some electives you can take without the intro courses that count as part of the 3 main branches of science. A course at CTY is probably insufficient to let you take any advanced course. Most of the introductory science courses at Exeter prepare you adequately to get an 800 on the SAT II, if that’s an indicator of the material we learn…

seikuu r u from beijing??
yeah i want to pass chinese >330 and do more electives, but i really really want to continue with my spanish…any suggestions guys??

yes

you can’t get into a language halfway through the year unless you test into it. you could take chinese for 1 term then test into spanish… that way you can stop spanish whenever you want since you fulfilled the language requirement.

my thinking is that you can learn a language anywhere, while some things at exeter you won’t be able to learn in most other places.

@Tuesdays: It will be a good thing to prepare, but you will NOT be able to skip the course. I am a CTYer myself, and I know other exonian CTYers, who took Physics there, but are still in intro physics. However, they understand the material a lot better.

also, I’m auditing music lessons AND Symphony Orchestra. You only fill out forms if you’re auditing a COURSE that meets during a day. [i.e. a language].

@somnusc: If you feel like being cheap, go ahead and take Chinese. If you feel like learning something more, go for Spanish. I mean, you’ll definitely have a “slacker” class, and that’s nice to have sometimes. [for Chinese]

@seikuu: the science courses do NOT get you 800’s on the SAT II Exam. The average for an Exonian is actually only 700. [for Physics anyway…]

“The average for an Exonian is actually only 700”
ONLY 700? thought i’d never see the day…

seikuu, you said:

What do you think the most unique course offerings are for Exeter?

If I want to take tryout for two orchestras during the fall, which one do I sign up for during course registration?

@neatoburrito

Most of the senior english/history electives (since most schools only have standard english and us/world history), as well as some of the religion courses (philosophy, existentialism, etc). There are also some fun science electives (genetics, quantum mechanics, nuclear chemistry, etc) and arts (architecture, printmaking). The archeology courses also seem pretty unique.
