Extracurricular Activities at UCLA!

How's the literary magazine, or for that matter the literary community in general (if there's even one to speak of)?

"does the fact that i got the alumni scholarship help me get some alum contacts who are in the industry? they said u will form a lot of relationships with ucla alumni who can help u get jobs, but do u know how much this really helps?"

yes, you are actually PAIRED up with an alumni. during the late fall quarter, you get to go through a contact book of alumni associated with the alumni association and select alumni who you want to be partnered up with. you might not get your first choice as a freshman, but it's nice to have one.

i was interested in either law or business, and the alumni who i got paired up with is a sports agent. but he has a law degree (JD) so he gave me a lot of insight about law school, and since he does basketball recruiting in china and does a lot of traveling, he has a very good grasp of business and international business. he's been a great help in giving me a lot of advice.

the alumni scholars club (the club you're in if you're an alumni scholar) also hosts some alumni mixers throughout the year. i know one of them was called "feast on foot" where alumni scholars got to eat dinner with alumni in the apartments. the Student Alumni Association (SAA) also hosts something similar for all students, it's called "dinner for 12 strangers."

alumni scholars club also hosted an interview night where alumni came back and taught some tricks about interviews.

of course, there are many other ways to meet alumni. for example, we just had something called "entertainment night," where many alumni who are in the entertainment industry came back to UCLA and we were free to meet up with any of them and talk to them about their careers and how to break into the industry. i'm sure if you're involved in other clubs or fraternity/sorority on campus, you might find an opportunity to network with alumni of those clubs.

although i dont think alumni specifically help you get a job as in hiring you, they do give you advice and help along the way. unfortunately, USC has the more tighter-knit alumni family, where hiring is included.

nevertheless, if you're an alumni scholar, you're lucky, because the vast majority of UCLA students don't have access to such opportunity!

"How's the literary magazine, or for that matter the literary community in general (if there's even one to speak of)?"

hmm... i haven't heard much about literary magazine(s). i suspect there are several on campus, but none have a commanding readership. they are all probably affiliated with various clubs on campus. all the good writers on campus write for the Daily Bruin, the campus newspaper (3rd largest newspaper readership in Los Angeles and one of the top college newspapers in the US).

perhaps someone else more familiar with this could provide better insight on this...

I was specifically interested in parliamentary debate. The mock trial info is quite interesting though--something I'll be looking into.

kfc4u- thanks so much. gosh taht entertainment night thing sounds just like what i wanted...was that the only time it will happen or is it every year? or at least are there similar things on a regular basis? that would really suck if i just missed it...

"I was specifically interested in parliamentary debate."

sorry, i haven't heard anything about that. i guess people who are interested in that focus more on getting an internship rather than doing forensics. the internship is probably much more important as you'll get to see the other aspects of being in parliament than just debating.

"was [entertainment night] the only time it will happen or is it every year? or at least are there similar things on a regular basis? "

i believe it is annual but i havent been around long enough to say. there's also a lot of job fairs, internship fairs, study abroad fairs, etc. that the career center hosts throughout the year. they also host other talks where they either bring in guest speakers or recruiters.

ADVICE for the self-starter and ambitious: VISIT THE CAREER CENTER during your first quarter. find out what theyre all about, what resources they have available. also, GET ON THEIR MAILING LIST. that way, you'll know all the upcoming fairs and other neat stuff that's available.

Hehe, Parli Debate has nothing to do with getting a job in Parliament. It's just a different kind, like Lincoln-Douglas. I just asked because it seems like no one on UCLA's campus seems to pay very much attention to the debate team, so information is hard to find. It's one of the reasons I still haven't sent my SIR in yet--trying to find more info.

apparently, speech and debate is affiliated with the communications department:

<a href="http://www.commstudies.ucla.edu/extracurricular.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.commstudies.ucla.edu/extracurricular.htm</a></p>

scroll down to the bottom of the page. that's where speech and debate is mentioned.

however, i haven't seen them recruiting around on campus and would've never heard about them if my friend hadn't told me about it. so i'm not sure how active they are.

"Hehe, Parli Debate has nothing to do with getting a job in Parliament. "

oh no, i'm just saying most people focus on getting an internship (for the "real life" experience) rather than on debating.

Do they have a cricket (a game that Indians die for) club?
Do they a golf practice range and a swimming pool that students can access without actually taking a golf or swimming class.
Can the students use the gym (without taking a class there).

rancho park is a public golf course that isn't too far from ucla. it's about a mile or two s/se from ucla. right across the street from fox studio on pico bl.

"Do they have a cricket (a game that Indians die for) club?"

this is all i could find for cricket... westwood is the area that UCLA is located in... but i haven't seen any ucla students playing cricket on campus
<a href="http://www.westwoodcricket.org/index_content.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.westwoodcricket.org/index_content.html</a></p>

"Do they a golf practice range and a swimming pool that students can access without actually taking a golf or swimming class."

golf.... there isn't one on campus, but plenty in los angeles, although i dunno if they're available for general public access or not.

swimming though, you can do at the sunset recreation center (a good number of kids do this) without taking a class and its right next to the dorms:
<a href="http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing/sunrec.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing/sunrec.htm</a></p>

"Can the students use the gym (without taking a class there)."

yes. the wooden center is available for student use and very very popular. they've recently expanded the gym with a new "wooden west" addition. however, they do also offer many classes too.

picture of wooden center: <a href="http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/ucla/facilities/wooden-center-lg.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/ucla/facilities/wooden-center-lg.jpg</a></p>

article on the opening of wooden west:

description (i copied and pasted it):
Inside the building are 10 racquetball courts, two squash courts, a coed weight room, a basketball gymnasium with three regulation courts and seating for 2,000 people, a volleyball and badminton gymnasium, a dance studio, a gymnastics training center, a matted room for Judo and Karate classes and numerous meeting rooms.

how's the networking in general at UCLA? the schools im deciding between take so much pride in theirs. does the career guidance office help?

Haha, aim78, I just read your response about tennis. McEnroe stingy on line calls, haha. Did you hear about his talk show that got a rating of 0 and then was cancelled?

He had a talk show??? I guess with a rating of 0, I'm not the only one asking that question!

Yeah, it was on CBS I think. I watched one show with Sir Elton John thinking that it would be cool and somewhat have tennis involved, boy was I wrong. One of the most boring shows I've ever seen.

how's the networking in general at UCLA?

in short, it is like everything else at a big public school: it's available but you have to take the initiative to find it, cuz it won't come find you. although if you are an alumni scholar, you'll get a better networking experience since alumni's donate for your scholarship and like to meet and even help out the scholarship winners.

if you're referencing to USC as the other school, then i would think most people would agree with me that USC's networking is much more tighter than UCLA's.

"does the career guidance office help?"

yes, i've found them to be pretty helpful. there's always drop-in counseling, and they are active in bringing in recruiters and hosting fairs for students. like i've mentioned earlier, just recently, many alumni in the entertainment field came back during "entertainment night" and students had the oppotunity to talk to them.

but as much help as the career center offers, isn't going to spoon-feed you and give you a guaranteed job.

thanks kfc4u its a pleasure to have you on cc. You are the best!!!

All students have access to ucla alum's who have volunteered to talk to students. See <a href="http://www.uclalumni.net./Networking/UCLACareerNetwork/%5B/url%5D">http://www.uclalumni.net./Networking/UCLACareerNetwork/</a></p>

BTW, kfc4u writes "in short, it is like everything else at a big public school: it's available but you have to take the initiative to find it, cuz it won't come find you." Almost like something I could have written myself! I think that's the biggest lesson to get across to new students -- the resources to do whatever you want are out there, and people are happy to help. But you have to take the first steps.

i was curious about water polo. I dont think im good enough to make the club team or NCAA team but do they have intramural water polo for men?

"I dont think im good enough to make the club team or NCAA team but do they have intramural water polo for men?"

yes, there is intramural water polo for men during the spring quarter. you should be able to sign up for this like all other intramural sports... drop by the wooden center for more details.

if anyone was wondering, the men's water polo team is the NCAA national champion (defeated stanford in the finals) this year, and the womne's water polo team is currently ranked #1 with an undefeated record.
