Extremely Low Transfer Rate

Hello all.

Several people have recommended WUSTL as a "transfer-friendly" school to me. However, looking at the statistics for 2011, only 9% of transfer applicants were accepted. In contrast to 2010, when 18% of transfers were admitted.

I understand transfer rates are going down nation-wide, but is there any specific reason why Washington University is going down so much faster?

Transfers are done to bring overall class sizes to the level that Wash U desires.

Fall 2010 had a huge over enrollment for freshmen…more freshmen accepted admissions than they planned by a significant margin. As such, the levels are still above normal (some people might drop, etc.) and thus there is fewer and fewer room for a transfer. I’d expect the next 2 years of transfers to be close to 10%, at which point it might go back up to 15ish (as long as no overenrollments occur).

Wash U wants X number of students; too much above and there are problems, too much below and they lose money. Transfers are the yearly attempt to come closer to X.

It really is nothing more than a numbers game.
