So i did my fafsa and i sign it with my pin. My dad didn't have a pin to be able to sign it electronically so we applied for one and the pin was in process. Now from my understanding is you can sign the fafsa with the pin even though is in process mode. Is that true because that what my dad did? We did this yesterday by the way.

Now a day later we get an email saying:

Your request for a Federal Student Aid PIN cannot be processed because the Social Security Number (SSN), name, or date of birth that you provided on your PIN application does not match your information on file at the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Now my issue is what happens to my fafsa application?

Well i tried to see if i can still print the signature page but it doesn't let me access my fafsa application since the fafsa is in process mode.

So again what happens to my fafsa application?

The deadline for California is March 2 (tomorrow) so i'm really worried.

Is your dad’s PIN the one with the wrong SSN? Go to [The PIN Web Site - Federal Student Aid](http://www.pin.ed.gov). Choose Reestablish my PIN. Pick a PIN yourself (that is, make up your own 4-digit PIN). Sign the FAFSA right away with that PIN (and your PIN, too, if it asks for it).

Yeah its my dads. But we already submitted the fafsa application which is now in process so it wont let me access the fafsa application. I did the Reestablish my PIN and this message appeared:

Your PIN is considered to be conditional until your information is verified with the Social Security Administration (SSA). You may sign a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with it, but nothing else. Once we complete verification with the SSA (1-3 days), you will be able to use your PIN to access your personal information on Federal Student Aid Web sites.

Just keep watching. As soon as your FAFSA finishes processing, you can add the PIN and send it.

So I’m writing what happened again because i feel there is a misunderstanding.

Ok so i did my fafsa yesterday and i got to the page were it requires a signature. I had a pin number and my dad didn’t. So my dad applied for a pin number and when he completed the application my dads pin number was being process. Even though my dads pin number was being process we can still sign the fafsa with the pin numbers and that is what we did. Now our fafsa is being processed.

The next day we get an email on my dads pin number which was

Your request for a Federal Student Aid PIN cannot be processed because the Social Security Number (SSN), name, or date of birth that you provided on your PIN application does not match your information on file at the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Now, what is going to happen to my fafsa application since my dads pin could not be process. Is my fafsa still going to go through? What should i do? March 2 is the deadline for California where I’m at which is tomorrow.

No, your FAFSA will be rejected as long as your Dad does not sign it with an accepted PIN. I assume his PIN was rejected, because something in his SSN, name, or DOB is incorrect. He will have to get a “good” PIN and sign the FAFSA before it will process and be considered an accepted FAFSA. Whether or not this is an issue for the CA deadline, I couldn’t tell you.

I don’t know anything about processing times or what’s involved in trying to get this corrected, but . . .

There have been several recent complaints of things not processing properly because of the tiniest variations in the spelling of a name or address. So, since it’s unlikely your dad messed up his SSN or DOB, I’d ask him to take a look at his name, and see if there’s any possible variation that might be on record with the SSA - a middle initial, a middle name, a suffix???

He may have transposed two numbers while typing in his SSN or DOB … it happens more often than you might think. The other issue is that the name used needs to match the name on the SSN card. He can just get another PIN and use that.

I think - and I do mean “think” - that the date on your FAFSA will be the date you initially submitted it for processing. You will know for sure once you sign it with a “good” PIN.
