CJM, my D is a current rising sophomore at FSU, and Ragan’s filled early with current seniors and juniors who had many years already in dorms. She had friends who are sophomores who did not get in to Ragan’s or McCollum. This will be their second year AT FSU and did not get in. So your son just had too many current students in front (many who also did not get in.) She was in Gilchrist as a freshman this past year, and there were many sophomores. Her roomate REQUESTED GILCHRIST again for next year as her first choice, so it is popular.

Your son will not be the only sophomore/junior in Gilchrist. Many sophomores have junior standing based on credit hours as well.

Have him fill out a reassingment request for Ragans and Mccollum-he has nothing to loose. There is movement during the summer when some students do not return for fall after all.

Same 350Z. I’m very thankful for this forum and its knowledgeable posters.

For requesting re-assignment, go to [Florida State University Housing](http://housing.fsu.edu) , then click “Check your housing assignment”. Enter your user information, and it will tell you your current assignment and have a link for reassignment requests. Best of luck!

Thanks again, Sunnyflorida! I think Gilchrist is great compared to what some others are posting. They raise a good question, however. . . can a student be put in a “worse” dorm if they request a reassignment?
I think D had to request a dorm for reassignment and I imagine if housing cannot place him there, they will leave assignment as is.

Persistence pays. Keep trying and you will get the dorm you can live with. D2, as a senior, STILL likes a single dorm room on campus better than an off-campus apartment.

CJM, call housing. They are VERY helpful. I do not know the what ifs about if he ends up with a worse assignment. They can tell you how it works. I thought that you listed a requests and they only moved you if you got a request. I would just call and ask. My D just now reaffirmed there will be “alot” of sophomores in Gilchrist this fall. Both Landis and Gilchrist are frequently requested dorms for sophomores, as is Wildwood.

Halfway through my freshman year I did a reassignment request to move from a Double in Gilchrist to a Single (still in Gilchrist, Great dorm.) I did a second reassignment request after I got a McCollum townhouse for this upcoming Fall to a single apartment (still in McCollum.)

For my Spring (Gilchrist) reassignment they asked for confirmation that I wanted it and gave me 48 hours from that point to move. They didn’t ask for confirmation on McCollum.

There are many many sophomores in Gilchrist. The 4th floor (girls) had mostly freshman but when I moved down to the second floor there were almost all sophomores or above.

If you don’t like the dorm you’re in I would definitely do a reassignment request! Do it ASAP. The computer works off of the dorm selection you picked and won’t give you a reassignment till there is an open space for you. So if you put a you want a reassignment to Gilchrist/Broward and don’t select a room preference you could end up in any Gilchrist or Broward room but you won’t end up someplace else, like Kellum. You can also update your request after you submitted it if you change your mind and want to narrow/widen your selection. More choices you provide, a higher chance you will get a reassignment. If you are generally happy but would like a better room or a slightly better dorm… I’d do it!

Wildwood and Degraff, for example, have two separate but linked buildings. So if you are in DeGraff your first number is 1 or 2 indicating building 1 or building 2. The last three numbers are the actual room number, with the second number being the floor. So 1455 is building 1 room 455, 4 indicating the 4th floor.

For most of the other dorms, they are a single building. Gilchrist, Dorman, Broward and others begin with a 0 as the dorm has just one building. The 0 as a first digit is just a placer number for the computer. So a number 0324 simply means room 324, with the 3 indicating the 3rd floor.

The floor plans are not identical from floor to floor. So 324 is probably NOT in the same location as 424 or 224, especially in the old but renovated dorms. You just have to get there and discover your room. There are no published floor plans that are available online, I am sure this is for safety reasons.

There are anywhere from 1-4 beds in a “room.” So you may see bed A or B or C or D. That is also just to keep track of who is in what room, and how many beds to a room. Bed assignment is first come, first serve.

Okay, just applied for reassignment. Like some of the others said, you select the dorms you want for reassignment, so you won’t get stuck in something that you don’t want to. I wonder how long it takes, if it even happens. It seems a little unlikely that nearly 2000 people will choose to leave the dorms. Although, my friend last year was in dorman, with a 5000+ priority and she got reassigned?
Goood luck guysss, there’s hope!

hellomello, there are students who go summer and don’t return for fall, for a variety of reasons. There are fall enrollees who just can’t get their finances together. This year, there will be some who find that the tuition increase combined with the lack of increase in Bright Futures will keep them home. There will not be 2000 that don’t show. But there may be 10 per dorm that don’t arrive, or upperclassman who finally get into Ragan’s.

My D’s first roommate moved off campus by Oct, and in Jan two girls across the hall did not come back for spring. So sometimes, if you are willing, you get a call after the term begins and they give you an opportunity to move.

Yea I’m kind of bummed out having to live on the first floor. I like the view from a higher floor window, and I’ve always lived on the bottom floor. But it has its perks. you’re right near the door- no elevators/stairs… And that will also help a lot with moving in/out =)

But I will have to TRY to explore my building… Since its not like I will have to go through a bunch of dorms before I get to mine.

I was in the 1540s (I just can’t recall the specific number) - is that relatively good to get your room reassigned? I was placed in Dorman and I didn’t think my priority number was that high to not get one of the four halls I requested =/ so I picked 3 alternatives to be reassigned to; I hope I have a chance.
