Fall 2011 Admission Decisions

I got into Georgetown, Cornell (ILR), UC Berkeley, UCLA, NYU (CAS), and USC.

I chose Columbia in a heartbeat.

How many of the above mentioned schools are in the Ivy League? Only Cornell, and ILR is a state school. Easy decision!

Not that easy considering that Berkeley is nearly an equivalent, USC has one of the strongest alumni networks and UCLA is top of the notch too. Georgetown is right by congress, that comes with opportunities.

But then again, Columbia has New York City.

California’s public university funding has been shrinking for years due to the collapsing state budget. Overflowing classroom sizes and inadequate research opportunities has been a common theme across all UCs these past few years. Also, UCs charge private school-level tuition for internationals and somewhere in between for out-of-state. Only in-state permanent residents get the true public school tuition rates, and even then it has been rising every year for the past few years due to the state budget.

I originally thought about applying for Berkeley but the above facts combined with its (and all UCs’) rigid transfer requirements (can only apply for transfer into a specific chosen major, can’t switch majors afterwards, MUST have 60 credits completed and all of your general education/core requirements completed prior to transfer, must have most and sometimes all of your major’s lower-division credits completed so that you transfer as a rising junior, etc.) added to the fact that I’m an international student subject to 35-40k a year tuition and NO need-based and NO merit-based financial aid or scholarships, just making it not at all worthwhile.

Hello everyome… I just got a message from fedex that they have sth for me from columbia… And it will be delivered tmro …(i mive overseas)… Does thos mean im rejected?? Cuz i never got any email TT i got into cornell but i certainly hope i get in to gs :$

I got my acceptance package through Fedex without ever receiving an email either. I don’t think you should worry about it. Rejection letters only come through regular mail.

ComaPrison, where are you originally from? You started Community College in California aswell?

They’re making it tough on us internationals huh–at least financially. I think Columbia highly values an international background though. It makes for a good story.

Hello my Dear Forumers!!
I have not been here in a whileeeee! I almost feel like a stranger! Hehehe :o
I hope life has been treating you well so far! I know some of you probably wondered “whatever happened to Invictus?”. Well, here are the details:
I was not accepted, but before sharing the details with you all, I wanted to know the details from CU in order to provide some insightful information to those who will eventually visit this forum for information.
Btw…hey Baxter! I got your msg, thanks for the inquiry, I’m sure today’s response will suffice an answer
I had a post-phone-interview to discuss the negative outcome of my app. The admissions officer told me – in a nutshell – that I didn’t have enough Liberal courses, which I don’t. Most of my courses are “professionally oriented” in business. Even though I had a 3.72 GPA, they wanted to see more Liberal Arts courses in my curriculum and or quantitative ( I took CalcI & Stats- got an A) but I guess that wasn’t enough. Most of my Business/Accounting courses did not transfer to CU towards my decided major ,FE, which is the major that I wanted to go for. They told me that if I took some more LibArts courses and kept getting good grades that the outcome would be better if I decide to re-apply in the future…So that’s my story!
I kept bugging you all to share your stories, so here is mine  Life is about moving forward and this was a good experience even if I didn’t get the outcome I wanted, this has motivated me to work even harder now and I hope that all of you keep thriving for your dreams and never give up. In the words of BuzzLightYear…”Never give up, Never SURRENDER!!” LOL!
I hope you are all enjoying your Summer. I had a great time on this forum and I really enjoyed our moments of anxiety together.hehehe. Right now, I’ve enrolled in Plan B and I will keep moving forward and hopefully I will see some of you at CU’s SB –MBA, cause I plan to go there ;).
Best of wishes and have a great Summer my Dear Forumers!! :)

I got into UCLA and USC and chose Columbia GS.

ComaPrison and mjmisa, just curious, did you guys recieve your Fedex before a phone call?

^ I’d like to know as well.

@Patrick312: I’m originally from Canada. I started community college in Socal. I would never pay private school rates for a public school education. Paying private school rates for a private school education is something I think is perfectly fair though.

@soph00, moonandstars: I NEITHER received a phone call NOR an email. JUST a big fat Fedex with my acceptance package.

Disclosure: I am recalling my experience from last year for you. Things may have changed in their operating procedures since then.

Thanks, ComaPrison. It must have been tough being in limbo for so long until you received that package.

I applied for early-decision and got my package in April. Are you regular-decision?

I’ve been following this site since the June submission deadline but have yet to post. I must say it’s exciting to get everyone’s updates but I’m getting more anxious by the day. I completed my application June 1st and Columbia has shown everything received since that date. Guess it’s just a countdown now…

I am regular decision. With all the problems that popped up such as my transcript being misplaced, SAT score report not being found etc etc, it was only last week that everything seems to have been finalized. It’s practically July already so maybe they won’t take long reviewing my application. I’m praying I get in. I spoke to someone on the phone earlier and his statements were quite guarded. I asked about rejection and acceptance letters and whether I would get a call if I was accepted…but all he would say is that acceptance and rejection letters come via regular mail :s

@februarystars- yup, we both just have to play the waiting game now. Good luck to you. I hope you’re not a nervous wreck as I am.

What other schools did you all apply to? What other schools have you been accepted to already?

I didn’t apply to transfer to any other schools next semester. I have applied to and was accepted by schools in the past such as Barry, U.Kansas, UMKC. I only applied to U.Kansas and UMKC because my sister lived nearby and I wanted to be close to family as I am an international student from Trinidad and Tobago. I applied to Barry because of Florida’s climate (cuz you know Trinidad is HOT). I currently attend the College of Staten Island in NY right now primarily because of the tuition and my family being nearby. I didn’t give Columbia or any Ivy League school a thought because it just wasn’t my style. But my mother’s aunt, who went to Columbia, finally convinced me. I would post my stats but I wanna wait until I get rejected or accepted.

Has anyone (or heard of anyone) gotten an interview and then got rejected? Who was your interview with and what were the questions like? How long was it? I have mine soon and I’m dying of nervousness…
