So I don't see a Fall 2013 thread for transfers anywhere so...
Chance me, you guys? I know I'm not that good as a candidate, but what the heck.

SAT: 1780.
HS GPA: 2.6 (yeah, I didn't do too well in high school because of the workload, took too many IB and AP courses without even having the IB diploma).
AP: AP Computer Science A (4)
IB: IB Computer Science HL (4), IB Psychology SL (4), IB English A1 SL (4, not my first language).

College: Basically, Malaysia's MIT (I'm Malaysian btw).
College GPA: 4.0
Credit Hours: 30 semester credit hours (15 done, 15 on the way).

ECs:
- Worked as an intern for Apple Malaysia after high school.
- Active participant at CMUQ CS4Qatar (Computer Science for Qatar) convention.
- Represented my old school in Doha for National Robot Olympiads (got first place, but didn't go to the WRO because I moved back to Malaysia).
- Got 5th place at national high school programming competition with my team in Doha.

What are my chances, guys? I know my HS GPA and SAT scores won't do me justice, but I'm hoping that my ECs and University GPA will give me a tad bit of a chance. Thanks for the help in advance! Oh, and i'm applying to the computer science major.

Saw this thread and was baffled by the lack of posts it had!

Harzan: from my understanding (i.e. hours of droning through threads) UMD will possibly outright accept you with the 4.0, but most likely will wait list you as you (like me :p) have only completed 15 credits thus far, and will want to see your second semester grades. While a GPA that’s < 3.5 is pretty much a shot to the head, I understand that for the most part UMD won’t look too closely at that-focusing more on your actual college performance.

As for me…

I’m a student at an in-state Community College whose reading these posts with mixed emotions (I’ll read one post and think I’m sure to be rejected, but then I’ll read another post and think that I might not be so boned). Basically I was wondering if someone could gauge my chances (honestly, please don’t hold anything back, and be as brutal as you can).

Stats:
Maryland Community College GPA: 3.41 w/ 15 credits
-9 credits in the summer of 2012
-6 credits in the fall of 2012
-12 planned credits for the spring of 2013
GPA had an upward trend from about a 3.1 to a 3.5
Nuclear family all graduated College Park
SAT: 1910 w/ 660 Math, 650 Reading, and a 600 Writing
Essay: Confident in the essay’s ability to capture me
Race: Black, Sierra Leonian-American Male
E.C.: Lots of community service, Eagle scout, some drama in High School
Residence: Maryland resident of course!

P.S. I took 10 credits at the same Community College I now attend, senior year (2011-12) with jumpstart program

Thanks so much for any help, good luck to everyone whose applying, FEAR THE TURTLE!

Thanks so much for the reply da60net!
I actually went to my transfer adviser and found out that my GPA is a 3.1 but with 37 transferable credits (and twelve coming in the spring still).

Not to beat a dead horse (but I’m still going to), how do you see these “new” factors affecting my chances at Maryland (I’m probably not going into a LEP right off the bat btw)?

P.S. if you’re wondering why my adviser didn’t chance, me she did (said that as long as I hit the priority deadline I’d be good to go). I’d still like to get someone else’s read on my chances, so that I can properly gauge my expectations for rejection/acceptance…

Do you have to worry about any gateway/required classes for the major you’re looking to get into? If so, what grades did you get in those if you’ve taken them?

I’d still give you a better than 50% chance of at least getting put into letters just because you’re over 3.0, a Maryland hs graduate and MD CC transfer.

You shouldn’t get too worked up about College Park though. I’m applying having already been told by the Clark school that I’ll be rejected for engineering and I expect to be rejected for general admission. The application fee is cheap enough to make the gamble that there is a chance, through appeals and probationary periods, I can get where I want to go.

Put another way, at least you know one person one person you will beat in admissions :-)

Da6onet, According to the transfer adviser I spoke with, UMD won’t deny you admission if you haven’t completed all the prerequisites for the program you’re applying for, they’ll just put you into a general studies program… I think.

Furthermore, if I were you I wouldn’t worry too much about being denied (tho I don’t know your specs), if you’re looking for an engineering major (which means you’re either really smart, or really insane), but lack the credits in specific courses, you won’t be turned away. Think of it like this: if there’s someone who’s good enough to get into their school, why in their right minds would they deny that person because they didn’t take the proper courses to get into a specific major? It’d be a waste, as that person might go to another institution.

I appreciate your chancing me da6onet, and I look forward to seeing you at some campus parties next fall lol.

P.S. if you’d like I’d be more than happy to chance you, good luck my friend.

Hey I don’t usually post on these things but I figured I’d give it a try.

I’m a second semester freshman, I was accepted to UMD during my senior year but I’m looking to transfer there now. I go to Northeastern University but I’m from NJ originally.

I have a 3.5 GPA and 17 credits from last semester, and I’m taking 17 again this semester
