Fall 2014 Transfer Thread

thats what mine says. i think thats normal

so if that is normal…mine doesnt even say that and I am still completing my 30 hours…IS THAT NORMAL?

I just failed a test in one of my class, it looks like I can’t make an A anymore. Do you guy think I should take a B and move on or withdraw it and take the W? I already have one W in that same department when I took dual credit in high school.

@saammmaay what does yours say?

@Foafoa Are you sure there is no way to make an A anymore? What class is it, is it related to your major? Have you completed at least 30 hours?

If you have completed 30 hours then this gpa will not go into the gpa used to make your admittance decision I don’t think, so you can still get a B and get it out of the way.

This morning, I tried to log into my California community college account with UT EID. Apparently, I logged into UT too often and the EID is now in my head forever.

I think it is time for me to join this online support group. The waiting game is just too overwhelming to handle alone.

Stat: Out of State
1st choice: CNS computer science
2nd choice: UGS undeclared

30 credits and calc requirement completed. GPA 3.8 to 3.90-ish from American schools.

4 LORs, should be pretty strong.
Relevant computer science internship experience in America and various other work experience. Some volunteer experience while in foreign country.

Essays are okay, if not great, in my opinion.

Bachelor degree from foreign university, but useless in America. Low GPA, like 2.93, from the foreign school, but it is nothing like the system here in America, which I explained in essay. I hope UT can appreciate that.

Since I likely have no hope for any decent grad school here, let’s see if OOS plus foreign degree can still have a shot at UT. I bet the chance is kind of slim, as the priority is given to students with no bachelor’s degree.

I don’t want to be stuck in community colleges though. Let’s just wait and see.

@lovechickfila COLA does not require you to have a Calculus credit for transfer and that includes all majors. CNS, McCombs, Cockrell, and if I’m not mistaken The Jackson School of Geosciences are the only schools that require a Calculus credit for transfer. When trying to find another choice of major aside of neuroscience I had heard the same thing, but when I called the admissions office they said you didn’t need one. Thank you though for the heads up,

There might be some majors that don’t need the calculus requirement, but I’m not sure. I’ve never looked into the other majors. Good luck with Public health, I’m sure you’ll get in! :)

@lovechickfila and @Saborak depends on the major. There is a calc requirement for geographical sciences and economics also I think. Both in COLA

@rice00princess I had not seen that before, I’m sorry for giving off false information. It’s nice to know next time if anyone has questions. Sorry about that!

Found this link that shows transfer GPA’s for each college for Spring 2011. I know it was 3 years ago, but I found it pretty helpful and encouraging lol.

Scroll down to How GPA affects transfer admissions part of page

@Saborak No worries. I think the calc policy for COLA was recently implemented. As far as I can remember it wasn’t there the last year.

So, I’ve been browsing this site for a while and as a current film student who has applied to transfer to UT’s RTF program for Fall 2014, I have to say that all of these chance-me and transfer stats posts are depressing me and making me second guess my chances for admission…

So while I know this will probably only depress me further and people will likely tell me that hoping for admittance is a waste of my time, here are my stats.

Current college - Junior at the University of Oregon / Major - Cinema Studies, Minor - Communication Studies
Current GPA - 3.2 (this is where I’m most worried… )
College applied to - Moody College of Communication
Major - Radio Television Film
List extra curriculars - For HS, Band, Interact, GSA. Admittedly didn’t do much in these other than be a member. My extracurricular strength comes from my time at U of O, where I’ve been an elected officer of our film club on campus for two years, and have worked to increase visibility of the club within the University and the community, which is a topic I wrote about in one of my essays. I also included on my application for the employment section, as well as on my transfer resume, of my employment with the University as a Video Producer for the Cinema Studies program.
Number of letters of Rec and who wrote them - One from the Associate Director of the Cinema Studies program which spoke to my leadership abilities as well as my academic abilities really well, and another from a production professor on campus which spoke to my leadership abilities again, as well as to my video production work.

Extra info - I’m a Texas Resident, so I don’t imagine I’d fall under an OOS student, even though I’m currently attending an OOS school. My personal statement essay spoke to my work as an elected officer in my film club and the work I did there, and work that I hope to continue as a student at UT, and my other essay was about our generation standing up and appreciating young LGBT lives before they are lost to bullying and suicide, which included a personal story from me on how I’ve done this in my own life and how these actions need to continue in the future.

Before I started reading all of these depressing threads of people being discouraged while having much higher stats than I do, I was actually feeling pretty confident about my chances. Now I just feel like it was a waste of my time, but admittedly mostly due to my GPA. I feel like every other part of my application speaks well to my work as a student within the University and community thus far, but I’m really worried how my GPA will affect my chances :/

@Jennet: I’m applying for RTF too, and I think we’re on the same boat, my GPA right now is 3.5. Honestly I don’t think I would stand a chance but the thing is that I don’t have a lot of volunteer and extra stuffs other than a few hours working at the church during weekend, you seem to accomplish a lot.
As for my part, I just hope that I can get into my second choice which is COLA undeclared, then rebuild my GPA while at UT and do the internal transfer route.

@jennat I’m not gonna lie to you and say that GPA isn’t important, but GPA is not everything. I’m sure UT accepts people with 3.2 and denies people with 3.7. You still have a chance, and I’m sure UT will put heavy emphasis on your resume of work with film, and film projects that you did in high school and college, and you seem pretty well of in that department. Don’t get your hopes too low. There is no guaranteed GPA for rejection or acceptance.

@Jennat Don’t lose hope. Your resume makes up for your GPA. Have you completed 30 hours? Maybe you can use this semester to raise it to a 3.5ish when you send in your final transcript. If not, still do not worry. With UT you never know. They do a holistic review so they will take everything into consideration, GPA is not everything. Good luck!

@foafoa I didn’t even think to put a second choice because I really am only interested in the RTF program and I wasn’t sure what the effect would be in putting a second choice. Do you think I should have just to be safe? Good luck to you though in your admittance!

@jjyoon36 Thank you! I know that my GPA puts me back a lot compared to many other people trying to transfer, but I’m really hoping my work with film helps me get in…this is so stressful!

@lovechickfila Yes I have 116 credit hours at my school…which is another thing I’m worried about haha, what if that’s too many?! I know not all will transfer over…does having too many transfer hours become a bad thing? I still plan on finishing 60+ hours there and indicated that in my choice of major so I’m hoping it makes no difference… and yeah I am trying to raise it for my final transcript but I’m not sure how that matters in their decision making right now! Thank you for your reply though, I really do hope I stand some sort of a chance.

When will the status turn to in-review?

@rice00princess
completed 30 hours- Most likely late March, early April
less than 30 hours- After your final transcript is submitted

I am really freaking out right now. I have less than 30 hours, and my GPA is a 3.7 (hopefully going to stay that way), my CC isn’t sending out final transcripts till May 21st and is predicted to be there by May 25/26. Do you think UT will reject me because they would have already admitted too many transfers or because it’s already so late in the game? I don’t want to be penalized because of my school
