Fall 2014 Transfer Thread

Just curious, for those who do not have your 30 hours complete yet, what does your status page say?

@rangers32: You should consider co-op housing. There are many co-ops that only one or two block away from UT and the rent is not expensive (half the cost of dorm). I’m applying to one of these.

http://collegehouses.org/

@Saborak‌ @rangers32‌ I’m in the same boat… I haven’t heard of 21 Rio/21 Pearl, definitely going to look into those. I’m positive that I don’t want to live on campus. I’m in a dorm here at UTSA and I don’t dig it… No clue what I’m doing in the housing are either, so you’re not alone!

I just applied to the College Houses co-ops. Looks like a great option since I want to live in an environment where I can make friends, besides the dorms.

I know I haven’t been accepted/rejected yet but I just wanted to secure a spot so I don’t end up stranded looking for a place to live later in a couple of months. :stuck_out_tongue:

@lovechickfila‌ I was just look as well! It seems like a great alternative to dorms, but I was looking at the availability and it has zeros all across the board?! I hope that’s not right for 14-15

@123456B I do not think their availability is accurate! They said it would be updated late March but it is still 0’s across the board. To me it looks like they haven’t gone around to changing it yet, so I would apply anyway and not worry!

What houses were you thinking of applying to?

@lovechickfila‌ I’m looking at Laurel and Taos!

I applied to those as my 2nd/3rd choice on my application! They all seem so nice though, I think I’d be content anywhere.

Question: does UT put any preference if you graduate with an Associates? I’ll be graduating from Austin Community College in December and will be applying for Spring 2014 admission. Chance me please: GPA 3.47 now, 3.5 by the end of the summer session. Associate of Art in Government - applying for COLA (Government program).

My story is a bit different - I’m 25, married, have a daughter and have worked full time (with overtime) through college. My GPA was lower and has been in a upward trend (which I think will help). Church has been my extracurricular and volunteer time. I’ll have 2 or 3 letters of recommendation. I’ll have 64 credits at the end of my last semester (maybe 67 - I’m deciding whether to take Spanish III or wait until I’m at UT [any thoughts???]).

Thanks for the help!

Is anyone looking at the Castilian to live?

Is there a deadline for admissions appeals?

@UTMomWife i don’t know if they put an emphasis on that or not. My guess is they do not. You are in my situation as well, I am married with a daughter. I am changing careers after 13 years to Geophysics and work full time. I know the stress you are under. I used academic fresh start to wipe out my college that was 10+ years old and started over from scratch in Spring 2012. By the end of this summer I would have finished 78 hours. I tutor adult learners in math to help them get into programs because I find it silly the road blocks people have because of inadequate math prep they received in school prior to attempting college. I know because I was one of them and spent 13 years toiling around thinking I would never get to do anything other than what I do now. I will most likely double in Geophysics and Mathematics. Point being is your journey to where you are now is much more impactful than your associates. I most certainly wrote about my journey and how I have used my learnings thus for to help people. That essay is crucial.

I currently have a 3.62 with Calc. 1, 2, 3, Diff. Eq., Lin. Alg. and a course in mathematical physics and all science requirements completed and none of it means anything alone. I am right on the border for GPA and I am worried. So I would say at this point as an adult learner with a family how are you using your new found skills and still holding the fort down. Volunteering for the sake of adding it to an academic resume is what it is, but if you are volunteering to help those who need it AND using your new found skills then that is very impactful.

Also I am not devaluing the associates one bit. The accomplishment for that is huge, and congrats on that. One other thing to keep in mind is that UT requires 60 hours of in residence so be careful you don’t eat up your hours at a CC that you could do at UT and meet that requirement. I of course have pushed into that 60 hours in residence and have a decision to make if I am accepted into UT. TAMU vs. UT

Howdy all!

I am a current freshman at an out of state private school but am a Texas resident. I’ll have 32 hours by the end of this semester with around a 3.65-3.71 GPA as a History major which I think will be competitive enough for COLA. I have leadership positions throughout high school into my year at my current college, a strong essay, special circumstance letter and a good recommendation from my current advisor so I feel pretty confident I will get in.

In terms of housing I applied pretty early (February) for co-op housing and will be living in Halstead. I’m really excited about starting a new chapter of my life at UT!! Hook 'em :)

I apply for ICC but they say they won’t counter-sign the contract without proof of enrollment. And the total amount of money to pay upfront when signing the contract is eight-hundred-something dollar in which 100 dollar is non-refundable. I don’t want to risk it so I decide to not sign the contract and wait for my acceptance & financial aid packet first.

I also looking at College house for the Laurel and Halstead. The cost is significantly higher than in ICC but their facilities look new and neat. Plus they seems to have a lot of international student living there, I’m not an international student but I do like to hang out with those.

@lovechickfila‌ You’re right, they all look super nice.

I’m kind of torn on what I want to do as far as the living situation is concerned! I want to immerse myself into the diversity that UT offers, but at the same time, I enjoy being alone a lot. So I’m also kind of looking into getting a small studio or something along those lines… But I can’t decide on what I want to do!

If I applied now, would I still be able to get a dorm room?

Dorms will most likely fill up because freshmen get priority.

Dorms don’t actually fill up as badly as people say^. At least thats what my friends tell me.

If I have an Econ class that isn’t at UT But they give me ECO 3 Hrs, does that mean I still get the 3 hours for my 120 needed?

Jester, castillian, dobie, and the towers will have openings if you need them, but they are all pretty pricy. If I make it in, I’m trying to find a roommate to live with me at 21 Rio. It’ll split the cost from $900 to $550. (they charge an extra $100 for splitting rent) :stuck_out_tongue:

@Saborak‌ The fact that they charge and extra $100 to split the rent is ridiculous!
