I’m thinking about starting the application for Scripps for Fall 2016. I would love to attend a womens college and I’m also extremely interested in the Claremont Colleges because my major is kinda of hard to find and I know they offer classes from all 5 colleges. The things is, I’ve been reading alot of past posts and almost no one gets into the school as a transfer because of a lack of room? On the website, it doesn’t mention this at all. In fact, they say that they admitted like 40% of their applicants (there were only 30 or so of them). I’m guessing that was for the Spring semester or its stats from a years ago.
They also say housing isn’t guaranteed. Which is kinda of a scary as a transfer student coming from across the US, I’d love to rent out an apartment but not sure if that would take away from my transition into the school/making friends on campus.
What do you guys think? Is it worth it to apply? I’m applying to alot of other small liberal arts schools so saving that extra $60 app fee would be great if there’s a .01% I’ll get in.
Has anyone heard about transfer applicants for FALL or housing?
The reason that the general acceptance is deceptively high is because it’s a very small self-selective pool of applicants, the obvious one being men don’t apply, but also as it’s not a big name, applicants tend to only be people very serious about Scripps, and a few other reasons. So a lot of really qualified candidates don’t get in, but then again, several do.
Not sure how small the number of people trying to transfer is currently or if the number you cited maybe is current. 40% of 30 actually sounds like a lot unless they just had a lot of extra room that year or the applicants were just that amazing.
It would also depend on which year. Class of 2017 was the largest Scripps has ever had, so in terms of trying to transfer into it, they’re less likely to take more people. I think class of 2018 they were more average so a better shot I’m guessing. Not sure for the newest class.
There’s always housing. I wouldn’t be concerned about that. Absolute worst case scenario, there are some apartments just off of Mudd campus. I had a friend who moved there for medical reasons, and it took her maybe 10 minutes at most to get onto Scripps campus. And there’s actually a number of people who voluntarily live in those apartments for various reasons, so wouldn’t be hard to find other Scrippsies there.
And while there are some dorm parties technically that are meant to be just for that particular dorm, I’ve actually gone to just as many parties for other dorms as I have for my own. Not entirely sure, but I think we even do have an RA for off-campus living. Also, most Scripps events are not centered around your dorm anyways.
If you’re interested in going, then of course it’s worth applying. But if you’re trying to find reasons to not apply, then that alone would be a reason to not apply.
@szafir yes! The Tuesday before the app was due haha did you? Where else did you apply? I’m awaiting the decision anxiously because it’s the last college I’m waiting to hear from. I wish there was a set day it would come out
@eaeoa741 I think I had my interview the same day as you actually haha! At 2 pm:) I got in to UCD, UCLA and UCB and I’m still waiting to hear from 2 out of state LACs and Scripps of course! I wish we knew when to anticipate their decisions. I think I’d chose Scripps over all these schools honestly.
What about you?
I did not! Good luck to you guys Any of you guys apply to any other women’s colleges? I applied to Bryn Mawr and Smith but haven’t heard back from them yet.
No Scripps was the only one. Hey @misfits2123 so did you apply and not do the interview or didn’t apply? I hope you did! And good luck I hope you hear from those 2 schools soon too!!
I didn’t apply I ended up applying to 8 schools and the application fees started adding up so I had to cut some!! :’( Thank you though! I hope you guys hear back soon too! This whole transfer process is so crazy and stressful
@szafir congrats on all those schools!! I got into a few of the same ones including ucla and cal Scripps has been my dream for years but now that I have Cal, I’m not so sure. I’m so conflicted about it, and I was almost hoping one of the two would reject me so my decision would be easier. I have no clue how I’ll figure it out…
@misfits2123 no, scripps is the only women’s college I applied to! Scripps itself is so great with its proximity to other colleges and atmosphere that I didn’t feel any of the other ones were exactly what I was looking for. I’ve only heard amazing things about Smith though
good luck on finals and stuff if you’re going through that!!
@eaeoa741 I got rejected by Scripps did you get in? I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet because UCs are so expensive (I’m intl) but if I go this year it will most likely be UCLA because I heard they have a better Psych Department. But if I go to Cal I will definitely let you know!
I am actually hahah but I’m not sure I can give up a big name and big opportunities! Plus, I have nothing holding me down so I can leave without having to factor in many things and I’m not sure how long I’ll have that privilege so I’m taking advantage of that! New scenery! More rain! Far from home! IDK, maybe I’ll be a prof at Scripps one day… how is your decision process going??
