I'm a junior in high school and hope to attend NU in a couple of years. I have lots of family in Milwaukee and I was wondering if it would be a big mistake to own a car while at NU and visit my family often?

The thing is that I'd like to visit my family and friends that are there, and I don't really see a way of getting to Milwaukee like once a month unless I own a car. Is it a bad decision to own a car at NU? How's the parking/traffic around there?

Also, I would mostly only use this car for the purpose of going to Milwaukee, so gas probably won't be an issue.

As a freshman you won't be able to park on campus. A lot of people have Ryan Field parking permits, which are very cheap, and the field is about a 5 minute drive from Campus, maybe less. Shuttles run there all day, so when you need your car you just take the shuttle to get to it. If you wanted to do this I don't see why not. It's not really practical for simply getting around campus day-to-day, but for occasional trips to Milwaulkee it makes sense.

Ernesto, my daughter is an NU student and also has relatives in the Milwaukee area. There are bus and train connections between Evanston and Milwaukee. They can be a bit tricky, especially if you have to switch from bus to train in Kenosha, because they don't stop in the same place, but there are ways to do it. The Metra goes to Kenosha and will soon go all the way to Mitchell Field. My daughter doesn't have a car, nor would she want one at this point.

Here's the best starting point I've found for tracking down the routes and schedules.
