I'm a freshman who came in with AP credits..after this semester I will have taken
W131(AP)
A100
microeconomics
M119 calc
K204
and some gen ed's

I'm interested in the honors program at Kelley, so this is what I'm looking to take next semester:
X202 Honors Technology
X106 Honors Business Presentations
X205 Honors Business Communications
M118 Finite
G202 Corp. Social Strategy
X220 Career Perpectives

any thoughts? will I be way too overloaded? I'm not worried about my gen ed reqs since I've gotten a lot out of the way already with AP credits.

None of those classes are too difficult, but the honors versions require a lot more time (however, they give out inflated grades, so it kinda makes up for them). Also, business honors only requires 3 honors classes and you already have one. Maybe take one less honors class and substitute it with a regular class?

I would recommend keeping X205 though. That class is 50% group work and you want your group to be smart.

Also, I took no honors class freshman year and was accepted into the honors program, so don’t feel you need to take honors classes to look better (it doesn’t factor into their decision very much).

Another thought; take x220 the first 8 weeks. Even though it isn’t difficult, when that 30 page target report comes due, you will want to skip that class (and most others) for sleep and time to work on your project.

Thanks! After asking around, I think I’m going to take Business Communications fal of my sophomore year instead of next semester. Any tips about any of the other classes I’m thinking about? How is the workload-especially for X202 and G202? I don’t know much about those classes.

I think is is ok to put off both business communications until fall semester. Just don’t take a communications class and x202 the same semester, as it will be hard to coordinate group work. I second maxellis’ suggestion to take honors technology because of higher quality groups. My son’s group has a wells scholar and a kelley scholar and they are kicking butt on the group projects.

Maybe take an easy grading honor’s HON H203 or H204 class to help with distribution option and gpa. H204 taught by Andrews will get you an easy A more than likely, based on past distributions.

I would avoid the G202 section for direct admits with Mafi-Kreft at all costs. It is more work (you have to discuss issues through onestart) than the large non-direct admit sections taught by Steven Kreft. And she grades stupidly harsh for a direct admit class; my son was top 18% in her class last year, and only got an A-, whereas the top 25% or so in her husband’s non-direct admit classes got A’s, and there was less work in the husband’s class.

Some people have trouble with finite, even if they are good in math. You could delay taking it until sophomore year and it will not hurt you. Competition in finite is much harder than M119, as you can’t test out of finite, so there are lots of really smart kids taking it and thus it is harder to get a good grade. Conversely, many, many test out of M119 and start with M211 or M212, thus making the competition in M119 much more lax and a high grade easier to get.

As a freshman, you might have a hard time getting X220 first eight weeks. But I would take it second eight weeks anyway if you can get in, as there is no final, although it is time consuming because it meets a lot. It is a sure A and will be worth it to your gpa.

Any suggestions for some easy N&M gen ed’s? That’s all I still need. Thanks for the advice about G202-I definitely would have taken it with Mafi-Kreft had you not said that!

The easiest N&M classes I know of are PSY P101 and MSCI M131. No labs for either one. Sklar is a good choice for psychology P101, as he has six exams (drops the lowest score), five quizzes (drops two lowest scores), and lots of extra credit. S is taking it this semester and has a 102% average after two tests and three quizzes. The quizzes have all been online.

I checked the G202 numbers from last spring and the four non-honors sections had a combined gpa of 3.17 and the two honors sections averaged 3.10 with a lot more work. Very unusual for Kelley.

No, but I did get 3 credits for ENG-L 198 (Freshman Lit) from my AP Lit & Comp exam, and I’m taking an A&H course this semester so my A&H requirements are all set. I didn’t realize I would get A&H credit in addition to being exempt from W131, so it was a nice surprise.

Thanks for the advice for P101- I was thinking about taking it over the summer if it would be too difficult to get a good grade but if I can get in with Sklar I’ll try that.

oops, I just checked. I did actually receive the 2 credits for W143. I didn’t apply for the special credit though, so I’m not exactly sure how I got them…

Is taking finite pretty much necessary if I want a shot at Business Honors? I know I don’t “have” to take it to apply, but would it look terrible if I didn’t? I would rather take it at CC over the summer, as math (especially probability and statistics) really isn’t my thing.

Also, X202 and X106 in the same semester–really bad idea?

I’m going to take P155 but other than that the only gen ed’s I still have left to take are 2 300 or 400-level S&H classes-something I don’t want to do next semester.

I don’t think saving finite for the summer at a cc would hurt you for trying to get into business honors.

I think X202 and X106 would be too much group work for one semester. X202 has a big assignment or test due practically every week. Five group projects and five exams, and the class ends the week before finals and assignments are due beginning the third week. So ten big assignments are packed into about a twelve week period.

The grading is easy in X202, though, with 60-70% percent getting A or A+; but as a freshman, you would probably have to take it at 8:00 am, as it is only offered in spring in two sections at that time and with one 9:30 am section. There are only two sections of X106, and taught by the same professor, and she is not an easy grader. So if you can handle the early class, you would probably get a better grade in X202.

Good idea to delay the 300-400 S&H until after you get into honors. I would take psychology p101 and find an easy grading H203 or H204 honors class. If you write poetry, try Cecil for H203, as the last two semesters all 29 students who stayed in the class all semester got a solid A.
