Financial Aid

What the hell? I got ~20,000 in aid for OOS… but it’s ALL loans.

That means my parents will need to pay 19,000 out of pocket AND take out 20,000 in loans EVERY year.

I hope this isn’t right… At the very minimum, I/we will be $150,000 in debt at the end of just undergrad. This is ridiculous and not feasible :(

Kenson, we’re in the same boat with you. OOS, our aid consist all of loans. UW is not very generous with OOS as far as grants/scholarships, but we knew that going in. Our S is contemplating a few other Pac10 schools, but UW is high on the list.

I’m just shocked at how much it will all add up to. I always (incorrectly I guess) thought I’d be paying way less than the “Sticker” price of tuition… but I’m going to be paying sticker+interest if I do. Disappointing :frowning: I’m seriously considering a safety now.

Kenson, Pop808, I’m in state and my aid are all loans. My parents have to pay a little over $7,000 out of pocket, about $5,500 in student loans, and $10,000 on “parent loans”. I have a full ride to the rival school, WSU–as much as I prefer UW, I think I’d rather go to WSU so that way I won’t be in debt at all and my parents won’t have to pay or take out loans.

Does anybody know when letters are mailed out about UW scholarships? Things like Mary Gates, etc.

Do you guys think I could ask them to make some changes? Like have our EFC be the Parent Plus Loans then have the rest as student loans?

o.O Tell me if that works out smoothly I would love to do that as well, ross25! :)

I’m afraid to call…I think I have a few hours to muster up some courage. I hate phone calls. Seriously. So here’s my plan, since I’m on spring break, I’m going to go take a little drive and head up there and talk to someone.

Yeah, this unfortunately sucks. Does anyone even know what those different loans mean? I looked on the website, and all I could comprehend was that you will begin to pay all of the money after you graduate for up to 10 years?

yeah. . . I’m oos and I tried calling to get something besides loans . .the only thing I got was being transfered from office to office, and I’m still left with ~$30,000 in loans.

I thought for sure that they would give financial aid in the form of grants and work study, not JUST loans. Ughh. This is such a pain.

This is definitely kind of depressing. I don’t know what they expect… pay+take loans worth 40% of our income EVERY year? We have two other kids in college for goodness sake.

i dont know anything about financial aid. can anyone inform me?

does the $ given depend on your grades also?
and to all the people saying you’re getting $9k in grants. is that per year? or total?

I drove up there today and talked to the financial aid guy and he said that because of my EFC, they really can’t do anything. They suggested I look out private student loans if I don’t want to have my parents take out the 10K and/or pay the 7K EFC. So much for that. But I really liked it there…my friend’s cousin is graduating from the BioE program and I really want to do that…if I can make it.

So I received about $20,000 (Grants only) from UCSD and even work study of $2850. But since I’m a Washington resident, I still have another $30,000 to pay…

I was only given $13,000 (Grants only, not Work study) from UW and I live far away from Seattle. I’m from a low income family and I can’t afford to get loans for the dorm. Do you think it’s worth to make a trip to UW to show what UCSD offered me and ask for more aid?

gl92- I don’t think UW will adjust your aid as they are already a lot cheaper than UCSD for you since you are in-state. They are giving you 13k; tuition is what, about 8-9k for instate plus another 8-9k for room and board? So you need to come up with @ 5k. Between summer job and p/t job during school you can probably come up with a good chunk of that and then get a loan for maybe 2-3k per year, which would not be too much debt to carry. It sounds like UW is a good deal.

gl92 - They won’t. I tried the same thing (only instead of UCSD, it was WSU) and told them about WSU’s (essentially free) offer.

I’ve accepted the financial aid offer that they gave me but what am I supposed to do if I’ve been awarded a scholarship? I need to tell them about this, right?

^^^
Congrats on getting a scholarship!
Yea I think you are supposed to write the name and amount that you were awarded in the resources section of the financial aid status offer page and then submit it.

Thanks. But what happens if I just recieved my scholarship yesterday and I accepted my financial aid offer awhile ago? Can I edit the information on MyUW or something?
