My daughter, from NJ, desperately wants to go to UT Austin. She's got SAT scores well above the range, but her GPA (from a very rigorous private school) is only 3.2, mostly due to a weak freshman and first half of sophomore years.

She is interested in technical theater, and thinks maybe she'll have a better shot at getting in if she applies to the fine arts school. I personally would prefer her to take a broader range of courses.

My questions: Does anyone know if it's any easier for an out-of-state kid to get into the Fine Arts school than the general school? If so, would love more info about the program.

Secondly: Is there any way my dd could make sure that someone looks carefully at her application, not just dismisses her on the basis of a low GPA.

A friend of mine is a music major. She is a freshman so I don't know how she likes it, but I know that she still has to take several courses in other subjects.

As for your second question, contact the admissions counselor. Explain her desire to go to UT. Also try to express this in the essay.

Also, every student applying for UT is evaluated first for their first choice major, then second for their second choice major (in a different school than first choice), then for Liberal Arts Undeclared.

Thanks NathanTx. If anyone reads my daughter's essays, they'll see how passionate this kid is about the school. she has devoured the website and actually knows one dorm from the next! (and we live more than 2,000 miles away!)

Would you know if some schools are easier than others to get into?
