first year housing question

yeah i pretty much have the exact same concerns as you..i like the school (im hesitant about using the word LOVE until im actually there) but i havent really ever lived with people my age for an extended period of time...and im definatly NOT into the whole frat/sorority stuff

ah! yay! I am glad there are people like me already at CMU (or will be soon, but close enough) what do you know/like so far about CMU? what do you want to study? etc...??

i really love the location at cmu...its by a city and theres alot to do with friends besides drinking, partying on the weekends

i like that the people are smart and motivated, because i get distracted easily and i feel like i will benefit from this kind of environment

i would kinda perfer it be abit closer to my home but its about 7 hours away which i guess isnt too bad

the school has a nice atmosphere and its exactly what i was looking for in size...not too big, not too small

it was the only school that gave me financial aid...lol...which was a huge bonus

im in the college of science and if you look at my application it says i am majoring in biology, but i wouldnt count on it...im pretty undecided at this point...too many things i wanna do lol

haha your lucky you still have a year to find out about cmu...i had like...2 months

i hope ill see you there in a year!!

I hope so too!!

everything you have said is very encouraging, and I thank you for that.

oh, oh! can i add to good things about CMU?
i don't want to interrupt, lol.
sorry if i am.

offcourse you can! i need as much motivation as i can get :)

you aren't interrupting. It is wonderful to hear all these nice things about CMU (It makes me really hope that I can get in...)

since housing selections are made in order of when you turned in your $500 deposit and I haven't actually chosen between CMU and RPI yet, does that mean I would be screwed as far as housing choices?

hahaaaa, sweeet.

uhmm, well, in response to ida's questions
- i'm gonna be in SCS.

i'm convinced the majority of students at CMU are dorks... if not a largeeeeee minority. which is pretty cool, by my standards.

-actually, she pretty much said it all. i think the atmosphere/people are one of the biggest pluses to CMU. i seriously didn't realize how hardcore it would be until i started visiting forums, watching videos, doing basic internet research. i thought MIT was the only school with crazy cool kids, but APPARENTLY NOT.

there's such a diversity of things to do. clubs, sports, people who don't do either of the two, race, music preferecne, like, every classification.

idamayer, i'm assuming you're a girl? yea, it's like 60% guys... which can be a big plus. not only in the whole dating sense. but like, it's easier to get housing apparently, get more money/fin. aid., etc. it just overall rocks.

the only downs i can see are: bad weather and (i just found out) a lot of asians. i mean, i'm proud to be asian (i dunno if you guys knew i was, lolll), whatever, but i'm used to living in a community of 98% white. it's going to be a huge change for me. and while i'm being like confused for other asian girls who look NOTHING LIKE ME AT ALLLLLLL now, i'm afraid in college i'm going to be "just another asian girl".. which i think would basically suck a lot. it's one of my many unwarranted fears of going to college.

i'm kind of in the same situation as you, m17 (i just shortened it, lol). it's kind of shocking like.. not goign to high school? driving, classrooms with hallways, lockers, parents, living at home.
FREEDOM? independence?? what is that!?
it'll be all good though. i'm still uber excited.

wow i didnt know you were asian!!! hahah

its the exact oposite for me...im white and like 90 percent of the people where im from are asain...i guess some things will never change for me...lol

im going to miss my little brother sooo much (hes 4) everytime i tell him im going to college he says he wont let me unless i take him with me...and he like starts packing and everything...lol

oh good... I was hoping that CMU would be the way you described (yay for most of the school being dorks, lol)
yes, I'm a girl. I am hoping, rather, that I'll have a better shot at getting into CMU for that reason.
what is the SCS like?

well, from the other threads here, apparently it's like half white, half asian, and then a bunch of other people. so it'll be a change for both of us!

and cai.....yea. uhm, if you're a girl, i heard yo'ull have no problem i'm probably exaggerating/think too much of the whole girl/guy & geek/not ratio..... but some other girl who's in CMU already said she sent it in like two weeks before the deadline and still got morewood? so.. yea..

oh man, sometimes it just hits me how unrealistic i am, hahaa.

Personally, I'm from Hawaii where orientals are a very large minority and I'm stoked that CMU has a lot of asians! I assume when you say asians you mean orientals right?
<--- asian female :-P

notaprettygirl (though I am sure you are very pretty): what dorm did you sign up for (and why??)... Do they really give so much preferential treatment to girls? (sweet!)

oh, i'm gonna be a frosh, but i'm not tehre yet, lol. but uhm, i basically know waht's on the site and what everyone says (which i guess is basic knowledge?).

it's hard, it's tough, but it's fun. you have a lot of support from other students, TAs, and professors, and in the end it's worth it. there are a good amount of dorks, but not everyone's completely introverted. apparently the guys SPEAK to girls (i know guys who were so badly anti-social they wouldn't speak to me...at geek camp..), and uhm, yea. i'm scared because i'm afraid i'll be the stupidest one there, nervous i won't be liked (in both senses), but mostly excited because i love computer science.

im glad theres alot of diversity...i used to tell people that i WILL not apply/go to an all white people school...everyone found it weird since i am white, but yeah...i couldnt imagine being surrounded by the same type of people

that's really neat, morgan17...

notaprettygirl: what sort of geek-camp?? Most for my cs-geek-friends (all are guys) are fairly introverted at first, but after a while they figure out you won't bite...

notaprettygirl, dont worry about being the dumbest one there, I will be there!

im really worried about not fitting in/being liked

i gave up ALOT of comfort zone schools...schools where i coulda easily roomed with friends, and had tons of other friends there, and probably worked alot less...i also considered going to this one school cause the guy i sorta kinda like is there...hahaha...good thing i came to some senses

Cai: Haha, I do mean orientals. here, the only thing i hear about asians are: we're smart and good at math, we all look teh same, and can't speak english well (which is the stupides thing ever. i only can't be understood sometimes when i speak at like 60 mps, haha.

Ida: I really have noooo idea waht so ever. I think i might be making it out to be more than it is really. and i signed up for morewood e, then donner, then mudge.

morewood e
+close to campus, everything's accessible, all frosh
-coed by floor, only standard doubles

donner
+coed by wing, close to campus-ish, close to other dorms
-smells bad? apparently. and not as convenient as morewood

mudge
+prime quad/triples. basicaly that's it, haha.
- farrrrr from campus

and they all have big rooms, lol. which is pretty sweet.
**and they all have freshman only floors
