first year of studies

I know I can place out of a lot of courses in the first year of studies with my AP credit, so I was wondering how hard it is for freshmen to get into other classes that are not required. Also, can you minor in 3 things? I was thinking of majoring in political science and minoring in Irish Studies, Journalism, and Public Service, but is this practical? I thought maybe since I can get out of a lot of requirements it might be doable. One more thing: if I change my mind and decide to just double major in political science and marketing or another major in Mendoza, do I have to satisfy all of the requirements for both Arts & Letters and Mendoza?

I wasn't here for freshman year but from what I have heard it isn't too hard to get into other classes if you can place out of your requirements. The First Year of Studies is really about giving you a wide range of courses so you can find what you truly enjoy, not what you think you would enjoy. If you have credits coming in, it may be possible to do all of those minors. You will be busy, but almost everyone here is a double major (literally) so they are used to crazy overachievers like us. As for if you do Marketing, your primary college HAS to be the Mendoza School of Business. You have to meet their requirements, but not Arts and Letters. You could do a dual-degree if you wanted, where you end up with two degrees, one from A&L and the other from Mendoza, but for what you are describing the easiest thing to do is Marketing in Mendoza and a supplementary major in Poly Sci in A&L. I hope that helps.

A quick note- ND does not actually offer a journalism minor. However, it does have a minor called "Journalism, Ethics, and Democracy" that might incorporate some of your interests in journalism and public service. A major in Polysci with two minors should be doable as long as you plan out your courses well. Most A&L majors are only like 30 credits (10 classes) and minors are usually 15 (5 classes). Of course, if you decide to do marketing, it might be a bit trickier to work out the scheduling, but a double major or a business degree with two minors should still be possible.

I'm sort of piggybacking on her question, because I'm considering a double major in poli sci and marketing as well.

When I apply, can I apply to A&L and then if I do decide to pursue business (and get in, of course), just transfer over? Or do I have to apply to Mendoza and then speak with my adviser about majoring in poli sci as well?

If you decide to have any business major, you must be in the business school. You can start in A&L and then switch over if you want to try an A&L major, but any business major you pick up will have to be your primary major. I hope that helps!

You don't really have to apply to either college. You just pick one at the end of your freshman year. After that, you just have to make sure you are on the right track with classes and everything and have your advisor fill out a form if you want to switch colleges.

Thanks for all your help- yeah, I meant the Journalism, Ethics, and Democracy minor. Thanks for the info.

What about engineering majors ...how much flexibility is there for a minor in business?

I don't know off-hand but probably not much just because I think your primary major would have to be in the business school. You could do a dual degree option where you get a degree in business and a degree in engineering. I am not sure though.

There is no business minor.

I would think the closest thing to it is the Science-Business major, which gives you a degree from the college of science but still allows you to take a number of business courses.

There is a five year engineering - MBA program which is incredibly competitive to get into, so you have to cure cancer or something to get into it. In all seriousness, they accept about four or five people a year I heard and you apply middle junior year? But this was all explained to me about five months ago so I may be off on the details.

According to the Bulletin of Information that we received during orientation last fall, there is a dual degree program with Mendoza College of Business. You can earn a BS in a chosen field of the College of Engineering and the master of busiess administration. This is, of course, the five year MBA program. You must take the GMAT in June of your soph year or in Oct during fall of jr year. And, according to this info, it indicates that because it is a demanding program, only those students with "superior scholastic ability", "who have both the aptitude and motivation necessary for the combined programs should apply." If you are interested, it indicates that you should start talking to your advisor as soon as you are certain about it so that you can attain some guidance with regard to the process and requirements. I would bet that even if you do not get accepted to the program, you could probably take a few "key" business courses as electives that would help out on a resume. Hope this helps!
