First Year Student Housing

All residence halls are single sex and there is a very strong chance that each incoming freshmen will live in a double. First year males will live in Marsh Hall, Dennis Hall, or Wood Hall. All three residence halls for males are located on the Richmond side of the campus which is the side where the rec center and admissions office are located. The residence halls have academic lounges and living room-type settings. There are desktop computers as well. The number would depend on the residence hall. First year females will live in Lora Robins Court or Moore Hall. Lora Robins is the larger of the two and is located on the Westhampton side of the campus, the side the Science Center and Dining Hall are on. Moore Hall is on the Richmond side of campus. Lora Robins has kitchen area with sinks and cabinets. All of the first year residence halls have community style bathrooms. Students may bunk beds, place cement blocks beneath the bed, or loft the beds to create additional storage space through University Services. The rooms are good size. They're not huge and they're not closets. Students don't tend to complain. All of the residence halls have air conditioning and the entire campus is wireless. The laundry expense is built into your tuition and you swipe your Student ID Card to select a machine and receive a text message or email when your laundry load is complete and you can check online to see which machines are vacant and which machines are being used at the time.

Tyler Hungerford’s reply (Class of 2012):

As far as dorms go, you have Dennis, Wood and Marsh Hall. I would say that all the dorms are very nice and the rooms are pretty spacious. My favorite dorm is Dennis, but thats only because I live there. Its a small dorm, so you get to know a lot of people fairly quickly because you see everyone at least once during the week. I also live in a living and learning environment and I like that a lot too because you live together and you go to the same class so you get to know one another very well over the entire year.

Kellie Morgan’s reply (Class of 2012):

There are two female freshman residence halls, Lora Robins and Moore. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages, but they are both great overall. Lora Robins (usually referred to as “LoRo”) houses more students, and is close to the science building, post office, dining hall, music/arts building, chapel, health center, and apartments. Moore is closer to most academic buildings, the freshman boys’ residence halls, and the gym. Both dorms are pretty much equidistant from the library and the commons (the building that connects both sides of the lake).

I live in Lora Robins, and it’s sectioned off into A, B, and C blocks of about 24 girls each, which really helps to facilitate friendships. All the sections are sort of in a square shape with the bathroom in the middle of it all. (Both dorms have community bathrooms.) Also, the rooms in Lora Robins are slightly bigger, but you really can’t tell.

Overall, you’ll be happy wherever you end up. And in regards to the roommate form, be as honest as you possibly can! Think about the kind of person you would want to live with, and your own traits that may annoy someone else (messy? night owl? early bird?) and make sure you specify all that. As long as you’re honest, you’ll end up with a good match. And feel free to ramble on the form… better to be thorough!

Hope that helps, guys!
