Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

WOW FallGirl- 12 miles is impressive. I hope you were not too sore later.

My day was good for my “light” fitness habits. On top of the normal 5k, I added 2.5k (had done an extra 2k a few days ago and extra 1k last week)… at slower pace. So about 4.7 miles total. Loved the mid 60s temp - wore shorts and didn’t need to start with a jacket layer today.

@Colorado_mom are you running that almost five miles? If so, you don’t get to be in the “light” category!

To me, the only reason to even refer to “light” or “hard core” in this thread - and the original intent of the thread I believe - was to hang an “all are welcome” sign.

No one should ever diminish the results of your effort of getting off the couch, out the door or in the basement to exercise! Embrace every effort you complete!

We have been blessed with some high 50’s low 60’s weather for a few days. I’ve been mixing up my activity. Yesterday I did a cardio strength video and later ran a couple miles. Today I did a weights video and will walk after work. Oh, and actually for the first time in quite a while I walked outside at lunch today for a refreshing 1.5 miles!

We have had some great weather this week! Lows in the 30s and highs in the 50s-70s, but more importantly - NO RAIN! I haven’t been able to run on one stretch of sidewalk in months because it gets slicked with mud/icy mud when wet. I took off Monday because my mind needed a break. It was a good call, as yesterday and today were great. Today was a run followed by a prescribed double. My run was the 4x hilly neighborhood loop. Then I did a 30 min HIIT workout followed by a 45 min Strength and Power workout. I was dying, but in a good way!

NO RAIN is an awesome thing!

Yep “getting off the couch” is the main point… love all the encouragement and inspiration found here in this thread.

Yesterday afternoon I accomplished one of my “covid winter bucketlist” items and skated at the town’s outdoor ice arena. (They set it up each winter in a town park, under a gigantic pavilion, to protect it from melting in the sunshine.) In prior years before retirement, I wanted to get there but never did. I was very shaky at first and had to leave for other fun after 30 min, but based on my soreness there were some unused muscles that definitely got a workout.

I also ran yesterday morning, but that was only because my schedule and the returning \winter weather mean it will be a while before I can run on the trail again. That’s OK… snowshoeing is still on that bucketlist, so perhaps I will get an opportunity to try that.

“Lightweight” check-in
I’ve been getting exercise fairly regularly, but the second COVID vaccine set me back just a little. I walked a fair amount both yesterday and today. Hopefully tomorrow too. By the weekend I hope to be back to decent mileage on my indoor bike. Soon I’ll be outside biking again - yay!

I haven’t checked in since my ski vacation. It took a while to catch up with work, house chores, reading other cc threads, but I just got a chance to read here and get caught up.

The skiing was ok, not wonderful but since it was the only time we got to go since last year, it was great. The first day was spring ski conditions - soft (as in slushy, not powder) snow and raining. Then the next day the mountain was totally closed for gale force winds so we went to a museum in town and did some shopping. The next two days were cold so the rain/slush turned into typical New England hardback. Although this doesn’t sound like great conditions, it was better than expected and we were happy to get some days in and spend with our vaccinated daughter (we are not vaccinated). The mountain wasn’t our favorite but we picked it for state virus allowances.

We stayed on the mountain in a hotel so we could ski in/ski out and not use lodge. They had two hot tubs and they restricted to 4ppl in each which was of course abused and time limits were not honored. We were able to get some time in which again was better than not getting to use it at all which was our expectation.

Since then, my exercise has been kind of meh as well as my overall mood one year post lockdown. I am doing my walks but not much in the way of other videos or the wii fit. The step ups are still taking more effort than they should be. Someone asked me yesterday if I was doing my PT, did I look that decrepit out there? I was satisfied with my fitness while skiing but we weren’t skiing at a challenging place and the runs were short.

@jackief just keep plugging through with something - you’ll get your mojo back. We all hit a pandemic wall sometimes.

Yesterday we did one my favorite 3.2 mile loops which includes a stop at at deli to pick up sandwiches for dinner (OK the sandwich is why it is my favorite.

Today was an hour long walk with a friend which included a short break to chat with the maintenance guy at the big water storage place up the hill from my house. My friend had lots of questions that mostly boiled down to “would it be OK to put a soccer field on top of this space”

I started running about 5 years ago this month. My goal was to finish a 5K Turkey Trot with my kids. Two days ago I signed up for a marathon. It’s virtual right now, might go live. I am excited and scared. This is something I never imagined.

On the one year anniversary of the pandemic, I’ve heard several quotes of weight gain over the year, averaging 30 lbs. Not sure if that is “of the people who gained weight, the average is 30 lbs” or “on average all Americans have gained 30 lbs”. Both are scary.

Although I know a lot of that is stress and I am thankful to not have the worries of many, I am glad I did not slip into this cohort. In the past year I am down 25lbs, more than that in total as I joined ww the previous fall. Holding steady since Aug when I hit lifetime.

I have an in person doctor appointment in a week, that will be a good checkpoint.

It’s great reading all these happy anniversaries of sort. Average of 30 pound weight gain? Yikes.

I don’t have anything TOO exciting except for the last two days, I have not needed the heater in the shed gym! It’s been many months since that’s happened. Some mornings, I wasn’t sure if it ever would. But 50s feels super warm compared to a 32* shed. Wednesday kicked my tail and Thursday was another hard workout. This morning was another hard one. Getting out of bed was tough, but I coaxed myself out there. I ran a very gentle 10 miles just getting in the minutes, and was happy my mind was in a positive place. The video was another toughie, but it is my favorite of the Asylum workouts - strength - no bouncing! I did pretty well with it.

Can you share which one? You will be great, I know. You can do hard things. :grinning:

Thanks @ClassicMom98. It’s Marine Corps Marathon. I know- “go big or go home :)”.
If it goes live, I will be in the pool to do that since I am registered for virtual but I won’t necessarily get in. So I have a possible plan to run a virtual in my neighborhood.

Cool! I hope you can do it. I did it twice - in 2002 (the year of the DC sniper) and 2005 - back when I had free room and board. It’s a great one for a first timer.

@jackief - I read your “weren’t skiing at a challenging place” statement and smiled because it sounds like you had quite the variety of challenging conditions! So glad you were able to find a way to do a safe ski trip this year.

Yesterday I was able to squeeze in another run before the soon-to-arrive snow. Before I pulled back into the garage, my husband rolled out the snowthrower so we could put it right at the garage door. (And then I threw a towel over the steering wheel to make sure I don’t forget and back over it.) We don’t usually do that, but there is possibility of big snow dump this weekend.

I started couch-2-5k in winter 2017. In the first months I concentrated just on walk/run and only lost a few pounds. In the summer I was ready to also start eating better. By the end of the year I had lost about 15 pounds. Around that time I started food tracking with MyNetDiary, which I still do mosty for nutritional info. Today the app told me I’ve lost 4 pounds in 38 months, but I know that really the total loss was 20+ pounds … BMI now 22  I would have been OK with Covid-gain, which I did have in summer when too busy to exercise. But I’m pleased that retirement has allowed me the time to exercise a lot and eat right.

@jackief – strong work on the weight loss. The 30 pounds is a really scary number.

@FallGirl – you will be great either way.

Tomorrow is a chore day here so no cool hiking.

Tonight we are walking to a nearby beer place that has decent food menu,

So much good news on here!

@FallGirl , I am so jealous. I was a marathoner (and one ultra) in my 30s. You will feel so accomplished afterward.

@Colorado_mom , you are killing it.

@jackief , yikes on the average of 30 pounds. Ds2 gained 25, but he’s lost that and then some. He’d like to lose 20 more.

I made a conscious decision to work out and try to lose weight during quarantine. I am down 20 pounds from a year ago and almost 50 pounds since January 2017. Very happy!

@Colorado_mom i saw a Facebook post today from the Keweenaw Snowmobile Trails in the UP of Michigan.

It said, hey Colorado, can you send us some of that snow?

I saw they were predicting 91” in Estes Park! Yikes!

We are on a happy hour zoom with old work pals, and they say prediction near us is 2 to 4 feet. Maybe more in poor Estes Park, which already suffered greatly with the summer/autumn wildfires. One guy said he had 1:30 golf tee time tomorrow, which will be a no-go.
