Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Funny - I usually just get whatever 50+/Women sale option I see… but everything seemed on sale (a good thing). Had not thought about checking Sam’s - that’s a bit cheaper if I decide I want 300 of them. I take one most morning (and then also calcium/D most evenings), so that might be an option to just get the big jar.

I use One A Day Women’s, plus one daily Caltrate.

I often find good deals on Amazon.

@Colorado_mom I take a One A Day with iron (bought at Costco). Supposedly women past menopause don’t need iron, but my iron runs low. I tried taking just an iron supplement but my stomach couldn’t handle it.

Thought I should jump back on here.

I gained 10 pounds since the beginning of the holidays due to a number of factors – the holidays, big vacay in DC, but mostly that my mom ended up in the ICU and I got iced into the hospital with her for four days and have been spending a lot of time with her and out of my usual eating habits and environment. I got home Sunday night and weighed myself Monday morning. I likely won’t be going up there for at least three weeks so now was the time to get back on the horse. Since the Monday weigh-in I’ve already lost 4.2 pounds, which proves what I always say – you can’t out-train a bad diet. I actually closed all three rings every day during this period (though sometimes barely).

Anyway, it feels good to be eating again on my schedule and what and when I want. I was unable to do IF while traveling and at my mom’s, but I am back on that regimen. I know I’ll lose these other pounds eventually. Now 13 pounds from where I want to be. What’s great as well is that now that I’m back to doing my regular workouts I am so THANKFUL for them. Endorphins are the best.

I thought I’d check in here today too. Still doing the usual. I thought I’d try to get on a good 12 week program since we will be heading to Miami-Key West end of June, but then I ate way too much in the middle of the night a few days this week. Boo. There’s always next week.

I did realize, that while I am excited for the trip to see new things, if I never put a bathing suit on my body again for the rest of my life, I would not be unhappy. I just don’t like swimming and summer clothes. Give me sweats any day. But I do like to snorkel and see cool fish, so I will suck it up for that. I bought a new suit on Amazon that I think it cute and good for a 50 year old lady at the beach with her 22 year old son. Lol.

Today’s run was interesting. I pretty much cried when I went out. 15-20mph winds with 30-40mph gusts. I swapped out nice flat open road in the wind for hilly neighborhood with big trees helping to act as wind blockers. Definitely better, but still had the headwind for all the uphills. Ugh. I just kept chugging and did 11 miles. Slow, but I didn’t care. Yesterday I ran a little over 5 miles in 7:45-8:00 pace on sore legs, so I was thrilled with that. Today could be slow. Finished up today with abs and half of the P90X chest and back workout. Ran out of time.

We drove a couple of hours to a new to us city - might possibly be a place to relocate to for a couple of years once we leave our city. And there happened to be a toy and comic show in town. So H is doing that while I stretch in the hallways and read my book. But big bonus. Stopped at Wendy’s for lunch and H found $70 under the table!!! Told him he was free to spend it all here. I’m sure he will lol

Happy to have temp around 60, nice sunshine. You could almost feel all the “Yay it’s spring” sentiment of the walkers. It was winnnndy though. Liked my 5k run enough that I did another 3k

I think you could probably pull off all kinds of bathing suits! Sounds like a nice trip.

Score on the $$$ find! Although even fast food is so expensive these days I hope $70 covered your meal.

Circumstances get us sometimes! Sounds like you took a sharp turn now and are headed back to lose those 10 pounds!

Our weather has been all over the map. Even today, started just at @Colorado_mom described - sunny, about 50 at sunrise and felt like spring! Since then temperatures have dropped to barely 40, we had a rain storm, the wind came on so strong I saw 3 trees down in the neighborhood!

We eat cheap. $20-25 for fast food for two. Even in the DC area when we take older S and GF to a sit down restaurant, the bill for 4 with a 25-30% tip is usually $120 or so. Not drinking alcohol helps.

Yesterday was the really bad wind here. Boulder County had red flag warnings for High Wind and for Dust Storms (which impacted visibility - Rt 93 from Boulder to Golden, a stretch infamous for wind, was closed.). So I was delighted for things to calm down enough to get out and enjoy the sunshine.

Still keeping on, keeping on here. The weather has been mostly amenable for lots of walking, tennis and pickleball, so I’ve been hitting my 10k every day. Eating is still the same and I’ve now kept the weight off for 3 months.

One other thing, not really fitness or nutrition-related, but does fall under the “health” umbrella. This past weekend, I had my first alcoholic drink since NYE. I had been abstaining for a few reasons but with no goal of it being “forever”. Saturday evening the stars aligned and it seemed like a good night to enjoy a cocktail. I had just one drink, and not a particularly strong one, and I then found myself wide awake from 1am-4am and I just felt so punky all day yesterday. It was just not worth it. I don’t know if it is my age, my hormones, or what, but alcohol doesn’t seem to be something I can tolerate anymore.

That’s how I am. My first two years of college, I drank a LOT and had a very high tolerance. When I met H, he’d be drunk and I wouldn’t even have a buzz. I knew I was going down a bad path and did a 180. And then I found the few times I did (years later), I felt like you. One drink and feel like crap the next day. I couldn’t tell you the last time I had a drink. It’s been many, many years. I’m not against it. It just isn’t worth it to me. Plus, I’d rather eat my calories now than drink them. And I save a ton of $$$ too. H doesn’t drink much either. A couple of beers after doing yard work and maybe 1 beer with dinner once a month or so.

This is a good and appropriate discussion! Would also be a good new thread that others who aren’t “fitness” people might participate in!

Checking back in.

Spring soccer practices started last week. It will be easy to hit my step count goals on practice days. I’m involved with 4 teams this spring (1st grade, 4th grade and HS girls plus an 8th grade boys team).

Tuesdays I coach 1st grade from 5-6 and then play soccer from 8-9:30. Last week, I ended the day at 16.4K steps.

Wednesdays I coach 4th grade from 5-6 and then 8th graders from 7-8. I need to figure out better ways to do dinner than I did last week.

My wife is now retired so our current plan to try and walk 3ish miles on Monday evenings,

This weekend we went to the Charlottesville, VA area and did a cool hike in the woods near Monticello. We also did 3 separate distillery visits which included tasting flights (flight was the equivalent of 1 full drink).

In terms of alcohol-- I drink regularly and at levels higher than moderate levels (defined as 2 drinks per day). Post soccer is always 2-3 (and occasionally 4) beers, 2-3 beers when my wife I walk to our beer place and 2-3 margs+ 1 shot at our Mexican joint on Sunday evenings. I will say I genuinely like taste of beer and alcohol

I think the topic of alcohol makes perfect sense in this thread.

I just saw an interview with Rob Lowe and thought of y’all. The interviewer asks how he has stayed so good-looking as he ages. One thing he mentioned is he doesn’t drink!

I’m not much of a drinker. Like @ClassicMom98 , I’d rather spend alcohol calories on things such as dessert. I am seriously rethinking how much sugar I allow myself, however. I keep hearing how inflammatory it is.

I’ve not ever been a huge drinker, but I, too, honestly enjoy the taste of many alcoholic beverages (beer, red wine, bourbon…). I’d like to think that I can’t not ever have it again in my life, but I definitely need to have a drink understanding the consequences I’m likely to pay. More often than not, I’m going to opt not to bother, I think.

My little “rant” about the moderate measure. Why is it that men can have 2 drinks a day, and women only 1? Shouldn’t it be based on weight or something?

ETA this isn’t directed at you, @jmnva06, and I don’t expect an answer

I’m at day 161 of closing my move ring/getting at least 500 calories of exercise. I usually get well more than 500 calories. Plan is to blow the streak soon after 365. The reason I say soon is I’m not going to not exercise the next day just because, but I plan to go back to my “old” goal of exercising MOST every day, but it’s OK if I skip a day or 2 a month.

Nice work! It’s nuts to me how easily I get caught up in maintaining streaks…to the point that I have had evenings where I’m short my 10k steps and I just…walk in circles around my house to get that last 200 or whatever steps in. The psychology behind gamification is fascinating.
