Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

@abasket I was an “at work” member which had meetings at the workplace, similar to a level called “online and workshop”. (The meetings are called workshops). There is also an online only level.

The meetings have gone to zoom, each studio (the centers are called studios) publishes their zoom URL and their meeting schedule. You can attend as many as you like in a week.

The weigh ins you track yourself, since I had been tracking my weight daily in my fitbit app and then had my WW data in that app, I took an average for the adjustment and am using that as my WW weigh in. Example, today I was down 1.4 lbs from last week according to my scale, so I entered that weight in WW.

Is it as good as the meetings? Well, so much depends on the leader and the participants. I think it is somewhat helpful. Our at work series was supposed to expire this month, my online access goes through mid-May, I’ll see what I can get for an extension at that point. I am an above weight lifetime member so if I get back to goal I will not have to pay. Lifetime people do not have the weigh in requirement while the studios are closed.

Thanks @jackief . On the one hand I’m not sure what H has been getting from the meetings the last couple of years. He at one time was having really good success and weight loss and more importantly motivated to make good choices.

The last couple of years he was mostly going to weigh in and sometimes staying for the meetings. Put weight back on. Clearly not making good food choices. So on THAT hand I often felt like it was a waste of $$! But I would (usually) not say much about it hoping that he would get back on the bandwagon. :frowning:

I’ve been both good and bad today.
I rode my indoor bike for an hour, and I did a lot of yoga and and exercises. (I may not be able to move tomorrow).
But, in the middle of all this, I had 2 brownies and I swear I could have had half the batch and been perfectly happy.
I restrained myself, and now I have to figure out how to ration them to myself and my husband over the next several days.

continuing on the WW thread, in my opinion you need to get your mindset there first. I have done it several times in the past, but for me it was not sustainable, it was not a lifestyle change, it was a diet and then when the meetings ended I didn’t continue with the program.

This time, I am focused more on long term health reasons, I have several strikes against me genetically and I want to offset with healthy weight and lifestyle as much as possible. What I can control to give me the better chance of a longer and more active life in retirement etc. I will also say the WW app is much easier to use than previous methods so I do believe I can sustain it long term. But being a cheapskate, I want to get to goal weight so I won’t have to pay any longer than that takes.

Re: baked goods. I do love a baked good snack. Unless I’m having people over or kids home when I make any baked good I often only make half a batch. (brownies, cookies, etc.) Then when it cools down I cut them into individual smaller portions (brownies or cake or pie or whatever) and put them down in the freezer in the basement. Much less likely to eat them than when they are sitting on the kitchen counter where they are subject to a bite here and there throughout the day! When I want a sweet I go down and grab one portion.

Free standing handstands continue to elude me. I can do handstand push-ups (aka inverted presses), but need the wall to maintain balance. Something about falling backwards or forwards is nerve racking.

At the elite level of CF, the athletes are required to not only do handstand walks for at least 50’ at a time, but also do obstacle courses on your hands. That’ll never happen for me. Timely talk since my workout later today has handstand push-ups in it.

Also BTW, there’s been one of those celebrity at-home challenges on the Internet, where the celebrities are upside down, putting on clothes or taking them off. One of them is Simone Biles, which DUH is very easy for her.

I have enough trouble putting on and taking off clothes standing on one leg- upright! I was planning to work on balance (physical- not lifestyle) during this lockdown, but it hasn’t really happened.

I saw the celebrity challenge where you put your spouse/significant other on your back (like piggyback) and do squats. YIKES.

Kid and her BF did that one!

I LOVE Simon Biles. I have gymnast envy. Always wanted to be one. I tried HARD for several years, but I stunk. And then I grew 12” and that was that. I can do handstands but I’m not consistent at all. It might help if I could get a leg higher than parallel to the ground before kicking up. And no way will I ever try a freestanding HSPU. I can only microbend against a wall.

I also second the freezing sweets. Saturdays are our junk food days - 24 hours of junk. And I used to always make cookies, brownies, cake, etc. whatever H and I wouldn’t eat, the kids would finish by the next day. Now they’re gone. So I freeze whatever is left and bring it out the following week.

@abasket it’s a new program on Beachbody called “The Work.” It’s by a new trainer. I forget his name at the moment, but I know he’s trained some NBA players.

It’s been awhile since Beachbody has put out a new program that I will do. They have so many different kinds of programs, but I lean toward the more standard lifting/body weight type exercises. I’m not doing any kind of dancing, MMA, or boxing. It’s just not me. And a lot of high impact stuff isn’t for me either. It’s too dangerous for my knee. A little I can handle - as long as I can concentrate and not get sloppy.

I’ve had two great days of exercising. I feel so much better when I do something. I never could do a handstand and I am pretty sure I will never be able to do one.
I did just finish up the last of a bag of peanut m and m’s. I rarely bake but since I’ve been home I’ve been baking each week. This week I think will be oatmeal cookies. I give half away to my D and her BF. We eat a few and put the rest in the freezer.

I honestly never appreciated gymnasts until I started CF. Now I’m awestruck by them.

Back when we were able to go to a gym, I found it quite funny when you would see the strongest of people attempting a gymnastics “kip” on the bar (I.e., for pull-ups, toes to bar or muscleups) and have much trouble with the hollow and arch positions. Not as easy as it looks on TV.

OK, finally back. No more congestion, and have been walking ~1 hour/day. Two days ago I ran for 30 minutes and then walked the rest, but today my body just rebelled at the 20 minute mark, so I walked another 50 minutes. I appreciated those of you who run but said that you aren’t always eager to go out the door first thing in the morning; I thought that meant I’d never be a “real” runner. Maybe there’s hope for me yet!

For those of your running/working out outside, are you wearing a mask? People were chastising each other yesterday on NextDoor about runners/exercisers not wearing them. I find running with one really challenging. Walking is do-able.

@illneversaynever - I have cloth mask (not really a mask, I got it at a running event) that goes around my neck and have been wearing it when I run. I pull it up over my mouth/nose if I will be anywhere near another person. Which really means it’s usually just around my neck. I run early in the morning and the few people I see are pretty far away.

And…if you run, you are a runner. A “real” runner.

Geez, I don’t even see everyone in the market wearing masks, let alone running. Running with mask? I haven’t see one runner or bicyclist here wear a face covering/mask.

JMHO, and maybe not the most politically correct, but I’d tell people on Next Door to stick to yelling and shaking their fists at the clouds or get back to telling people to get off their lawns.

I workout in my backyard, but if I’m out running, then I just do my best to give everyone out there a “wide berth.”

Or maybe suggest that the non-runners stay home and walk around their house.

I don’t wear a mask when I run. I haven’t worn a mask yet at all, in fact. I have a dust mask and bandanas, but haven’t been to a store. I could not run with one. If I fell or something and a person came to help me, I have a wide head band that I could pull over my nose and mouth. I haven’t seen any runners with masks and only a couple of walkers.

I just can’t. I have asthma and it’s hard enough to breathe through a mask when I’m just grocery shopping. If I’m “running”, I do not wear a mask but I’m also careful not to get close to people. On most of the trails or roads I run, it’s easy enough to just run 10’ off the trail/road. There’s one place I run, though, where the walk is bordered by railing (long bridge). On that section, I run so close I’m brushing the rail and whenever I’m within 10’ of anyone, I conspicuously turn my head to face away from them. That’s the best I can do.

This is a hot topic now though, the idea that runners are spreading the virus, shouldn’t be passing people running (even if 6 feet apart) etc. I’ve seen a lot of comments on social media about it - especially in places like NYC that have more people on the pavement. I can’t help but think that it’s a bit of an agenda against runners. I mean, you probably have lots of WALKERS - and MORE walkers - in your 6ft personal space!

No, I don’t wear a mask. It’s so rare that I see another body out while I’m running. The chances that I just happened to pass someone who was sick with the virus and exhaled at the wrong time? Well, in that case, I’d chalk it up to fate.
