Meh. If someone has an issue, they’re welcome to chase me down to discuss it. Any comments made while I’m passing - good, bad, or otherwise - are completely ignored. I’m older now, but given that I was once a young woman out running I quickly learned it’s best to just ignore anything said while you run by.
^^^^ @ClassicMom98 But it’s YOU the runner that they especially want to wear a mask. Your heavy breathing, sweat, or who knows what else is what some people think is risky.
To each his own, but I personally am not looking to tick anyone off when tensions are high. And if someone wants to give me a compliment, I’m happy to listen!
I’m saying this as a former marathoner and ultra-marathoner … what’s wrong with people wanting you to run six feet away or more from them? Or to wear a mask if walking (depending on the mask I get why it would be difficult to wear one while running)? You are breathing heavier, and any spittle you expel would travel farther than someone walking. I’ve seen runners pass right next to a mom with a double stroller and a dog on the sidewalk. Who has the ability to change course more quickly?
I don’t think this is an agenda against runners; I think it’s people trying to protect themselves. I walk at 6:30 a.m. to avoid most others in my neighborhood, but I’ve seen runners passing walkers closely in my suburban neighborhood during the day where there is little traffic so there’s really no reason not to give others a wide berth.
I 100% agree that anyone- running, walking, skateboarding, biking, doing somersaults - all should keep a minimum of 6 ft apart - no argument there. Content I have read is that that distance is not enough for runners. I’m happy to give 8 ft or more if I can - I’ll go over on the grass berm if necessary at any point. I guess there are some aggressive runners or some aggressive non-runners who want to complain regardless of distance being kept!
That said I can imagine this is a bigger problem in more populated areas.
I guess that’s where I’m confused. I’m nowhere near 6 feet from a person. I’m more than 100 feet from most people separated by the walls of their homes. I guess those who pass me in their cars are closer, but still? Between 4:30-6am I might pass a dozen people out walking/running in a year in a busy year and we are usually on the opposite sides of the street. I’m more likely to be abducted/shot than give someone Coronavirus during my morning runs.
I can understand people wanting at least 6 feet from a runner or a walker or anyone. Are they saying it should be much greater for runners because they are breathing harder? I don’t see how runners could really wear a mask and would vote for the walkers to wear them. I would pick a less crowded spot myself, but I don’t know how easy that would be in a place like NYC. I guess my podunk town does have a few benefits!
After the horrific weather in the Boston area yesterday today was glorious! I walked for a whole hour! My longest distance since the accident. I got 7500 steps in today which for me is huge.
I have an X-ray at the hospital tomorrow. I am not thrilled about that. My surgeon did allow me to have the X-ray done at my suburban branch of BID where hopefully there are no COVID patients.
My appointment with him on Thursday is a telemedicine appt.
Fingers crossed I can still get my surgery in July.
Going to try for 8000 steps tomorrow!
And regarding runners… good grief.
I passed several of them on my same route( or I should say they passed me lol). I am the turtle and they the hare, I simply stepped a few feet off of the sidewalk to let them pass and give distance. Why is this so hard for people?
Edited to add… This is my new favorite thread, even though I am the lightest of lights. Everything is positive and you all give a great encouraging vibe.
Distance potentially needs to be much greater for runners & bikers – due to windstream effects:

It’s not a mask thing – it’s a who-is-directly-behind-you thing. You can’t do anything about people who choose to walk into space you’ve already passed, but you can make a point of steering a fairly wide arc around others you pass along the way, if space allows.
I don’t run – but traffic has been so low in my neighborhood since the lockdown that when I walk my dogs if there is someone else ahead of me on the sidewalk and I want to pass by, I have simply been walking down the middle of the street with no problem. I have yet to encounter a car while doing this.
The weather was particularly nice today, which created a different problem for me – as I rounded a corner on my usual route I saw a group of neighbors chatting, maintaining their distance by standing on opposite sides of the street with another person dead center in the middle of the street… so I had to pass within 4 feet or so of the person on my side of the street. I walked fast. ![]()
The keyword is UNPUBLISHED. People make up all sorts of crap and then it goes viral and being sent around like it is a quote from the Bible.
DH and I went for a walk today (2 miles so minimal exercise) he had a paper to review and I was wrestling with taxes even though they aren’t actually due today. We saw a lot of people taking walks together - one on the side walk and one in the street which meant DH and I kept weaving from one side of the street to the other to avoid them. We were joking they should make the sidewalks one way, but you’d still have the issue of passing the slowpokes.
I think runners should be giving people extra wide berths because of all the heavy breathing and possible slip stream effects. I can avoid the ones coming towards me, but sometimes the ones passing me while I’m walking get closer than I would like. None of the runners wear masks, and while I wish they would, I can’t blame them. We only wear them walking when we are some place with a lot of people and I hate every minute of it.
I just came across this via my university rec center that I belong to. Not sure if it might be an option for anyone here but it is a source of online workout, fitness and movement classes from 40 universities across the country. If you have an .edu email address from one of those 40 schools you can access all the classes for free.

I noticed that one of our instructors did an online cardio drumming class this morning. I have never done cardio drumming. I didn’t know they were going to do online classes! But maybe this was then posted to the above website for others to be able to do.
So posting just in case anyone here has affiliation with one of these 40 schools (or your family members/kids)!!
No mask when exercising, mask in the grocery store for me. I run at non busy times and cross the street to stay away from people.
Today’s run was 4x14 min hilly loops in the neighborhood behind me plus w/u and c/d walk/jog. I was passed by 2 cars, 0 people, and 1 unhappy coyote that sounded like a deranged dog. Same thing happened this time last year, and I guessed she had a pup to raise. Perhaps she’s had another and I should (again) find another route for a few months. Video of the day was Phase 3, Week 4 legs. The 2x15 in small groupings was brutal. Then day 10/22 of the ab challenge. And now work. Yay. But I got my stimulus deposit. Yay!
5 miles on my treadmill this morning. Knee did really well and I ran the whole thing. It was 27 degrees outside and I wanted a treadmill surface day today anyway. Glad to get the day started with that! Will walk the dogs later.
After Passover and school, I need to reintroduce the afternoon workout. I say workout, what I mean is really a second walk or a little time riding the bike while watching TV. I have fallen into the habit of sitting way too much. Yes, I get up and out in the morning, but after that…pfft.
I feel like I might be getting sick. Throat feels like I’m getting a cold and I’m TIRED.
H is on Day 7 of probable C19.
I didn’t train yesterday, and will skip today too. Appetite is depressed and sleeping sounds like a very appealing idea.
Gotta walk that dog first!
@Midwest67 oh no! I’m sorry to hear. I hope you can kick it with just minor symptoms
@Midwest67 I hope you and your H are ok.
I’m not a “real runner” also. My knees body and more importantly my digestive system simply won’t allow first thing in the morning running!
Speaking of knees. I get cortisone injections 3x per year and am 1 month past my scheduled shots. Consequently I don’t run more than 2x days in a row. I’ll extend it to 3x if the weather looks great. Otherwise, I need a break from the pounding. I usually spin, cycle or walk on my in between days. Before the pandemic I was going to my chiropractor and using his AlterG anti gravity treadmill for an hour. It reduced the pounding plus gave me the ability to run at 5 min mile pace for 3 miles if I cranked my weight down to 70-80%. I’m currently researching Botox as an option for my knee injections. I’ve seen some studies but not going to rush into it and most definitely going to consult with my sports med doc when he’s back in business again.
I’ve been thinking about age/longevity a lot lately (wonder why!) I’m now starting to realize that this exercise thing may have more benefits than performance related goals. Since I tend to view exercise as a performance based activity I’ve set a new goal of living to 100! And I’ll really be p***ed if I don’t make it 36.5 years from now!
Slow day at work today…rambling over.
