On track to my meet my step goal today! I had my appointment with my surgeon this morning. His exact words were “I think we will be open for business the first of June” meaning COVID will be under control and he can start performing non-emergency surgery.
He is at BID where they are in the thick of it so I felt hopeful by his comments. Not for me personally, but that he is optimistic that we will be in a much better place as a city in 6 weeks.
I did my “normal” hour long bike ride, plus yoga and weights during TV time. Tomorrow I have a “date” to walk 4 miles. Except for going to the grocery store today and walking to the end of the driveway for mail/trash/recycling, I really haven’t been out of the house for days.
I hope to get out more next week when it’s warmer.
6 miles today - 3 running, 3 walking that will probably make up for not as much tomorrow when we are scheduled to get 3-5 inches of snow! - say it ain’t so! And I already told H, even though I normally will do what is necessary for snow removal, I will NOT shovel on April 17! It will all melt April 18 and we aren’t going anywhere anyway so it can just sit there until it melts!
I set 6 month goals each January and July for walking, running and cycling. Already hit my purposeful walking goal for Jan through July today April 16! That’s what WFH and quarantine does to me - outside time is salvation! Not as close on my running goal but I’ll keep plugging away at it!
Kind of off topic but I’m thinking some people in this group might have some ideas. My grandson has a birthday coming up, and my son is having problems because GS is very high energy, and my son has a high-demand job that he is doing from home – so he needs to keep GS distracted & also working off energy if possible. The third household member is my son’s father (my ex) who is able to provide some amount of supervision while GS is playing/exercising, but would not be able to participate himself. (The granddad is disabled and has limited mobility – but he certainly would be able to keep an eye on grandson. ) GS is age 10 but big for his age – more around the size of a 12-year-old, so too large for indoor toys or games meant for kids. Any ideas? My daughter-in-law is looking at this: https://gym1.net/product/teen-fitness-athlete-package/
I was pretty lazy the last few days. Felt like sitting around and sort of wallowing. So I did and it was nice. Got back out this morning for a short run. I think the rest really helped because I feel like I might not have to put the word “run” in quotation marks - for me, I was flying. Hard to breathe but I felt strong and fast. This is probably at least partly because none of those dang high school or college runners were nearby to effortlessly demonstrate how slow I actually am, but I’ll take it.
Now I’m home anxiously awaiting 9 AM (I grew up in the rural South, it’s not polite to call people outside the hours of 9-9) so I can check on a bird I found yesterday. The wildlife people took it but I haven’t heard back to see what they thought was wrong with it or if it’s OK. If it just needs care and they could tell me what to do, I’d even be willing to take care of it.
@calmom That package is kind of expensive for what it is. You can get a good set of bands and a good chinup bar for much less. Is your GS in to sports? If so, a pitchback is good for lacrosse or baseball. A basketball hoop is also good, if he doesn’t have one. A pogo stick or unicycle is another idea.
@calmom I think the best active equipment to get is the equipment he wants - meaning that he is more likely to enthusiastically use something that he desires to have or partake in.
Can they present some options and let him help pick something out?? I think one of the best nervous energy activities is a basketball hoop and ball. Do they have a spot for a portable hoop or a garage that they can attach a backboard and hoop to??
LTmom - glad to hear the predictions from your dr, I am in the same general area and I think they will make good choices on when to take the next steps.
calmom- not sure if your S wants to buy something packaged, and if needs to be inside or if outside is an option, I think ninja gym components are popular.
My exercise continues to be yardwork, although I didn’t do anything yesterday. We had a lovely lawn ornament, aka dumpster, delivered yesterday. I am taking half day vacation today and Sunday (Saturday snow is expected) to assist DH demolish the deck. We are on DIY love it or list it with the outcome already determined.
@calmom I agree that the best equipment is to buy what he would use. I think of things like a basketball hoop, maybe even a mini trampoline, mine liked soccer and would do stuff with that. I know he’s 10, but when older S was an infant/toddler/pre-schooler, he was SO energetic ALL the time. I’d make him run laps in our basement and count while I laid on the couch and watched him with 1 eye open. Maybe he could run up/down the block? At 10, I’d let mine go ½ mile up the street and back and I live on a busy road (except at 4:30am!)
Today marked the end of month 1 in the C-gym. I told H my life is all backwards. The days/week fly by, but the overall time does not. It feels like much longer than 1 month. Usually, my days/week take F-O-R-E-V-E-R, but the months/years fly by.
I am pleased that my legs have adapted to the new routine. Yesterday, was a harder run day and the killer (but fun!) Total Body Core plus the ab challenge. Today was the easiest of the workout days. Very easy walk/jog/slow run with a lengthy stop at work for a bathroom break and to refill my purse’s hand sanitizer. Then lots of stretching & a few pull-ups during the cardio portion of the video plus their core (which isn’t hard). Followed by day 12/22 of the ab challenge. 1 more workout in 80 day Obsession’s Phase 3. Then it’s Peak Week and off to a new program.
I am also excited about how shredded I look. There’s something about this Phase 3 that does it. I eat the same stuff every day, maybe even a bit more the last week. But, OTOH I am not crazy when my cheeks get that hollowed look. I think it makes me look more manly. I’m 5-10 with a large frame. I don’t need any help in that direction. I don’t think I’m there yet, but I’m close. Makes it easier to justify that Easter Candy, right?
Really nice morning so I got outside for 3.8 miles. Gaining a little bit of fitness back and my knee is doing well. Hope to get over to the path tomorrow for a change of scenery and a little bit longer of a run.
Did my 4 miles or so walk around the neighborhood. I will miss all this exercise when i go back to working at work, but hoping to keep up the good habit.
Ran 2 miles this morning - it was 35 degrees, but it’s only cold if you’re standing still!
Plans for the weekend include checking out some videos on Fitness Blender. It’s a website a running friend recommended. Tons of workouts and you can filter by type of activity, level of difficulty, what equipment you have, etc.
Back in my home gym today. Warmed up with a row and the usual stretching/mobility work.
The program today was back squats 5x5 (5 working sets of 5 reps) and then a ladder of increasing weight doing hang power cleans. Finished up with a 20-min AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) of KB swings, box jumps, toes to bar and push presses.
For those with suggestions for my grandson – my son moved on March 1st, so I haven’t seen his house, but he is complaining about not having a lot of space and apparently no yard, just a balcony for outdoor space. So I think things need to be small or portable. The problem is that it also does need to be something that would be engaging enough that the kid will actually use it, but he’s just too big for most stuff geared to young kids.
