^^^ Does he have any interest in biking or even light running? Could someone do either of those with him?
How about a Concept2 rower or if he’s a skier, how about a Skierg?
A 10 yr old will engage in anything with an interested adult. So set up supervised energetic circuits, jump rope (deck?) jumping jacks, push, ups pull ups (get a doorway bar) maybe an indoor trampoline, but all he needs is a supervised plan rewarded by adult engagement, maybe even a reward ($, something of value to him). Set up 3 sessions a day of 30 minute circuits. Use a timer, app, anything that is engaging, but mostly he needs an adult to be interested and maybe keep notes. Granddad could be the scorekeeper and cheer squad. a 10 yr old will not just get on with something he sees as a blow off from the adults who just want him out of the way. Dad needs to do a session with him at least once a day. Make it a competition. Make a workout of the day suitable for what they have available. Integrate with an app that is engaging for the kid and a learning thing for granddad. So it is a two way thing. Get him a heart rate monitor.
Super slow stiff run today. This was OK, because I just dreamed about how I would entertain a 10 y.o. for @calmom . So much depends on the kid. If weight equip is his thing, great! but a few more ideas.
Indoors – nerf basketball goal. I’m not against things like Wi-Fit, Xbox connect. Even dance, dance revolution (mine would have rather eaten worms – it depends on the kid). There are tons of free workouts now. I saw an article on Joe Wicks – a British PE teacher who has daily live active PE classes from his living room. Could be fun. My kids had dozens of all kinds of balls. Younger S would LOVE while watching TV to jump, twirl, dive over furniture and throw it to me (slumped in the recliner). I had to catch it in my left hand and so did he. Lots of laughs there, and I could do it slumped over watching TV. (in my defense at this time I was working full time, training a lot, plus spending 20 hours/week coaching/managing the kids’ swim team, plus raising 2 wild kids)
Outdoors – basketball goals don’t take much space. Nor do many soccer drills. If parks are open, find a field to walk/run laps around. Grandpa/parents can walk. Kid can run. See how many times kid can lap adults in 20 min. If parks are closed, go to a movie theater, church, or otherwise closed business with large parking lot and do the same thing. I’m big on getting outdoors for some fresh air.
Build things! Legos, towers, blocks, train sets, etc. Or my favorite - Build a fort! Use any kind of sheets, blankets, etc. and set up in kids room. Can be as small or large as one wants. Keep up for a day or two, take down and rebuild differently That can be his space to hang out and do creative stuff. What interests him? Animals, sports, castles, trains, science, etc. Have him research stuff and show you – powerpoint, poster, etc. what he likes. List the top 10 places he wants to go someday and why. Maybe Grandpa could do the same (outside of the fort!)
Make it a game or competition. Make it FUN! Create the Corona Olympics or Decathlon. Come up with weekly challenges. Make posters for each person competing or double up as teams. Doesn’t have to be best person wins. Record all data and sneak in math lessons. Teach about % improvement, Ratios, etc. You can graph data or even teach him Excel. Winner of the week can pick a take out restaurant. Grand prize winner over the next XX weeks can pick the first restaurant you go to (when adults deem it safe). Rules can change as necessary. It doesn’t have to be perfect on day 1
Tried my first Fitness Blender workout today- Level 3 (out of 5) strength training with weights. I was pleased and found it easy to follow, especially with hooking my laptop to the TV so I could see it on a big screen. Will definitely do more of these.
10K run on the path for me this morning. Gloomy and chilly, but got outside! Heart rate still way too high for the slow recovery pace I’m running. I’ll get there, but it would be nice to not have every run feel like a race! Didn’t see as much social distancing this week, but it’s not a crowded path so it didn’t bother me. A couple of oncoming folks moved way over (as did I) but most did not. Went through the Dunkin drive-through afterwards!
Did you run through the Dunkin drive - thru? If so - I love it!!!
Took part in a virtual race this morning, a 10K. I did not print out the bib number, but did download the official race playlist and listened to it instead of chatting with the neighbors I saw out. I waved, but didn’t stop and speak. Later I explained to some via text why I didn’t stop and chat. It was not a fast race for me by any means, but if I had slowed down and bounced up and down in place to say a few words, it would have been even slower.
No- drove my truck to Dunkin! Wouldn’t have wanted to run all the way home with the donuts!
3.5 miles at the trail. Some family’s out but the trail is large so I only passed 3 groups, tried to leave a wide amount of space.
Saw a guy driving a golf cart on the access roads. The DNR officer was at the trail head to tell him it wasn’t allowed.
As we were driving there, saw the HS XC coach running with a pack. We only have 7 cases in our county and I think I am seeing more people out in packs than I have previously.
Well, Seattle Mayor decided that it was not a good idea to close the parks on weekends after all. Hoping the kids are enjoying the outdoors a little!
I am doing some functional exercise around the house today, chipping away at some projects here and there (not fun, but had to be done sometimes). Will walk our route and look for open takeout places later in the day. I am craving sushi big time!
I’m located in one of the counties in the SF Bay Area that will now require face masks when in public. And they “recommend” that you carry and even wear a mask when doing recreational activities like walking, running and bicycling depending on social distancing. Running just got a lot less interesting to me. Oy.
Oy indeed. I guess we will be seeing a lot of “fig leaf”-type masks. Not necessarily protective, just something to be compliant. We already saw some bicyclists with neck gaiters up to their nose and bandannas on the trail, but I have not seen a single runner wearing a mask. I’d rather be running on a treadmill than outside in a mask!!
Ugh. If it’s just recommended I still wouldn’t wear one at 4:30am running when I see zero people other than in a random car. Walking during the day, yeah. Except it’ll be more ugly when it’s 90+ degrees and humid. Which could be any day now around here.
If you really think you have to wear one and/or there are people around, get one of the half buffs - even guys can wear it sort of like a sweatband on their heads. If someone is approaching, pull it over your nose/mouth and then return it to your head.
Good suggestion - that will work as a face fig leaf.
I will probably just wear my face mask around my neck and then if I see people I’ll pop it on and off as I pass by. It’s just annoying, but now I need a treadmill. ? As @BunsenBurner said, I’d rather run on a treadmill now.
@MomofWildChild can you post an example of what a “half buff” is? I’m familiar with the TV show Survivor and what they call buffs. I wonder if it’s the same thing?
Another embarrassing confession - I’m fairly terrified of treadmills. I have one but rarely use it, seems so much safer to go outside. My bff asked why I never use my treadmill and because I tell her everything I told her it scared me. (Oh, God, I hope I don’t look as haunted as that poor woman on the Peloton commercial, because that’s just sad.) She asked why since all you do is run in a straight line at the same speed. I explained those are two things I don’t really do well for long. Guess when I’m outside, I run faster or slower and maybe even veer at bit as I look around because the treadmill just seems so awfully wrong. I feel like I’m just bound to step wrong and go shooting off the back. From the look of horror on her face as I explained this, I’m guessing she now pictures that I “run” much like Phoebe did on that classic Friends episode. Guess that’s not far from the truth.
Over the past couple of years, I’m having a few symptoms that could possibly indicate cardiac issues. Instead of seeing a doc, I’ve been working on diet and exercise. Mainly because the idea of having to do a stress test on a treadmill scares me. Of course I’d be the one that would trip and fall during the stress test, not only crashing off the back but taking out all the wired equipment with me. If only they could do the stress test on a rower or step mill - I’d be there in a heartbeat, but no way in Hades am I going in to do any sort of treadmill “running” in front of other people and hooked up to equipment. I’ll just quietly die at home, TYVM.
Check this out. I think they have the half buffs. https://buffusa.com/shop-buff/men.html I forget what brand mine are. The cotton is thin, but you can overlap it. I use mine as a neck warmer in winter or as a headband.
I checked. A lot of mine are from this company. https://www.naturallife.com/accessories/shop-all-boho-bandeaus.html
