Thanks! While I would not wear it into a grocery store (because a non-absorbent covering does zip to protect others from myself), I would totally use this as a facial fig leaf on a trail if needed. Who is going to check if it is not cotton? And the nervous nellies who are afraid that an occasional runner passing them safely will infect them… should stay indoors with all outside air being filtered through a series of HEPA devices.
“Nervous nellies” have the right to enjoy a walk or run as well. I don’t understand why everyone isn’t willing to work together and practice the recommended safeguards.
It becomes a problem when some folks turn recommend guidelines into a verse from the Bible. Fear has large eyes. Irrational fear has even bigger eyes.
It’s a tough issue - how to balance competing interests. I wrote a long post about how difficult it is to shut everything- including gyms and simply walking outside - down and how to evaluate the recommendations given what little we actually do know, but I suspect the heart of this issue comes down to - do you generally think government is the solution or the problem?
Do you truly believe we are governed by wise people making good choices and if they just had enough money and power, our government would make everything better and safer? Or do you believe that we are not governed by wise people, but instead by people who make choices for reasons other than the balance of public good, who if they had access to more money and power would just siphon more of it away or waste it through dumb or selfish choices?
Your answer to this and core beliefs probably influence how much you’re willing to “work together” or believe the “recommended safeguards” are reasonable or should be followed.
I forgot to report today’s activity.
40 minutes, 2 different YouTube videos. One Zumba and one walk at home by Leslie Sansone. I was curious about these walk at home videos as I have several neighbors who do them.
It was easy as far as being not complicated. I got my heart rate up and was sweaty. So I think I would recommend it as an uncoordinated workout for “lighter” exercisers. If that makes sense.
The Zumba was fun, and I really got that heart rate up.
Sometimes YouTube videos are a good alternative for cool, rainy days.
I did walk/run 5k today at the neighborhood lake trail. This time I wore a neck gaiter I have from Arctic Cool (breathable fabric)… but it is not as long a “tube” as the ones they show on the website now. Luckily temp was in 50s. Still it was a bit warm, so when no other people visible for a few hundred feet (and no footsteps heard from behind) I did pull it down to cool off for a spell.
I went out for a run today. I saw one runner wear a scarf thing over their face and I saw one bicyclist with a face covering, though not one of those serious types with a high end bike and the whole getup. Otherwise, nearly all runners and cyclists were sans face coverings.
I didn’t wear a face mask, but kept crossing over to the other side of the street and then returning back after passing folks.
So, I ran a 5K and then returned home for a 2K row, which I didn’t get to yesterday.
If anyone is giving the runner without a mask the evil eye they also better be doing it to all the people at the market/grocery store who are not wearing one or who are walking around with it off their face and around their neck.
I am rarely seeing anyone on our neighborhood trail walking, biking, running, skateboarding - wearing a mask. At the store yes, but our trail unless it’s an unusually nice day and peak time for families to get out, you can easily use the trail and keep distance +.
Wish I could rinse and repeat the free time of today!
3 mile run this morning, 3 mile walk early in the afternoon. 10K additional steps cutting the grass and doing yardwork. I’ll end the day with 14 miles worth of steps and hopefully a good night sleep!!!
@milee30, I’ve done treadmill stress tests, and the treadmill they use is much wider than the typical ones.
They start out very slowly, then gradually increase speed and incline, letting you know as they adjust. The only “fast” part is at the end, when they want you to max out. I’m not a runner, but have been able to get through it.
Most stress tests don’t take you to your true max (the point of exhaustion where you can’t possibly go any longer). They stop at a calculated heart rate. I’ve done the max tests back in the day where they really wanted you to go until almost collapse and they had people cheering for me to keep me going. It was part of a study. It was tough. A few years ago I did a stress echo test (they take you off the treadmill at close to max but not collapse and plop you on a table and do an echo cardio gram scan with sensors) to see how my heart responds to exercise stress. I had a couple of very fit running friends die while exercising and I wanted to check on any underlying and undetected heart disease. I checked out OK- at least at that point.
It’s been lovely here. Ran 45 min today (had to get back for at-home church), walked an hour or so the last three days. I write the following here to remind myself in case I go astray: morning exercise helps my daily mood the most. Apparently those endorphins make me a more pleasant family member the rest of the day.
I wore a mask with running for the first time. It is not my first choice.
I did “PE with Joe” with one of my kids this week. I thought it was fun–he did not, but will likely be forced to do it with me again next week unless he motivates to do some other exercise.
I had a hard time focusing yesterday, so after the Zoom yoga I gave up on mental work and instead took a long walk and hooked up that swim tether. The swim tether was too much fun! My little pool, unheated, was pretty darn cold, mid sixties I’d guess. That made it hard to get in and then hard to put my face in the water. I do have a wetsuit, two in fact, but decided to tough it out. Eventually I was able to settle down and breathe bilaterally in a rhythmic way. I didn’t last very long swimming, maybe five minutes at a time. More fun was pushing off the wall, swimming hard, and trying to reach the opposite wall before the bungee pulled me back.
And I wonder why I am so pooped today.
I could NOT have gotten in that cold water! 4 treadmill miles this morning even though it was nice outside. Wanted the soft surface. Walked the dogs and might do an outside mile later. Knee doing well. Fitness level slowly improving.
Monday mornings and rain should not be allowed! I was pretty grumpy looking at the long range forecast. Seems like I will have a lot of rainy runs coming up. This is when I most miss the gym! But it wasn’t windy or storming, so “suck it up buttercup.” Out I went, and I put in my time. I’m now on Peak Week. She takes 2 workouts from each phase this week, so today was Phase 1, Arms, Abs, I did well with it. Then day 15/22 of the ab challenge. Final week, so I upped a set per exercise. I confess I took off my wet shoes and socks. It helps. I’ve enjoyed the challenge except for the time. This week it will take 25 minutes to do all of the sets. I prefer 15 or less for core. But, it’s the last week, so “suck it up buttercup.” That does not mean “eat all of the peanut butter cups” BTW. They have been calling me more often than the telemarketers…
Good job getting out there and doing it, @ClassicMom98 !
H went out a bought me some frozen yogurt bars. My appetite has been poor since getting sick & those yogurt bars hit the spot.
I’m going to strip the bed and wash all the bedding today.
Then, nap in the sun. I continue to clock in impressive hours of sleep.
Not sure when I’ll be up for training. It’s Day 7 today of illness.
4 mile walk this morning. Cool and windy but sunny. Even wore sunglasses. Rain and maybe snow coming in later today
@ClassicMom98 are you seeing results from all the ab work? I am an apple and would love to find something that helps with my gut.
Y’all are pushing me to do 2x/day workouts. I’m going to try it today and hope my knees hold up.
Something was wrong with the Zoom connection and I couldn’t do my virtual vinyasa yoga class. I used to take a kettlebell class at my old gym and I really liked it. i still have kettlebells, so I found a beginners kettlebell class on YouTube. I had forgotten what a good workout kettlebell offers. Also, since I probably haven’t done a kettlebell workout in a number of years, this one was hard for me. I’m going to try to stick with it because I enjoy it.
