Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

What kettleball work out was it? I did a couple of HASfit classes, a little bit of one Adrienne’s yoga (too many things I couldn’t do, but also my feet were just not cooperating with kneeling) so I bailed on that. I’ve tried other stuff of hers that was fine, just not this one.

Today was supposed to be the big day in Boston. I wore my bright orange jacket on the trail in honor of the event that I hope will happen next year.

Sunrise yoga this morning, then a walk with H. Rain is heading in later, so if I get a work break today I will do another Fitness Blender strength workout.

I haven’t posted in a couple days, but I have been keeping up with exercising. I’ve really been happy I have this indoor bike thing, even though it’s 26 years old. I may invest in something more modern if a bunch of used equipment becomes available post-COVID.
I have been really bad with eating though. I have had more ice cream than is reasonable, and probably more wine too.

Beautiful clear morning here, but I didn’t want to go out to run. I did anyway. 4.1 miles done. It’s nice not having to go out as early as I do when I have to commute to work.

Went for a run, well more of a jog, since da’ wife was with me and she has had knee problems. Anyway, we have a park a half mile from home, and that park has a half mile soft dirt loop that winds around teh outside of ball fields, kids playground, etc, all of which are closed. The half mile loop is open for jogging/walking, however. Our county does not have a mask-requirement when outdoors, just when entering closed spaces, such as a grocery store.

Anyway, I am particularly sensitive to giving space and leaving space as I pass folks. Today, a senior was walking his dog on the dirt running path, and as I approached, I went to the far side of the adjacent sidewalk – at least 8’ of distance to clear. The guy calls out, “No masks?” (I ignored him). “No masks, for others?” (Again, we ignored him and continued on with my run/jog.

On the next loop, the man had taken his dog way to the inside of the ball field, at least 30’ away from the jogging path. As we passed, he starts up again, yelling due to the increased distance, “No masks?” This time I responded, ‘no masks needed as long as 6’ of distance is maintained.’

Was I wrong? What is recommended protocol?

^^ I think you were fine. That is protocol.

Six SF Bay Area counties have a new order starting tomorrow for reference:

Yesterday was a later evening workout. And I’m still recovering.

I worked on hang snatches, front pause squats (3 second pause at bottom) and single leg barbell RDL’s (Romanian deadlifts). The HIIT was three 4-min workouts of deadlifts, front squats and cleans.

Today, I’m still thinking about going to the outdoor pull-up station for work on my muscle-ups and then returning home for the rest of my workout. I’ll report back.

Ditto.

As much as I deeply miss my workout friends and as much as I have doubts that people running or biking past outside are likely to infect a stranger just by normal breathing (between UV light disinfecting and droplets scattering in the wind)… I’m very hesitant to go back to the small gym I belong to. It’s not an option yet - everything is still closed here - but as places start to reopen I’ve been thinking about what I’ll do if/when my gym reopens.

Right now, I’m leaning towards thinking that gyms could be major sources of future infections. Not as much because of touching common surfaces that haven’t been disinfected but because of the continued forced exhalations in a small, enclosed area over an extended period of time. I wouldn’t have thought it was a risk if they hadn’t already had that case of the choir near Seattle where most of them got sick even with social distancing and not touching. The current guess is that singing is a forceful exhalation that expels large amounts of potentially infectuous particles and when trapped in a small area over an extended period of time, other people breathing in become infected. To me, that sounds a lot like what could happen with a group of people exercising and breathing hard.

What is everybody else thinking if/when their local gyms reopen?

If you didn’t hear about the choir, here’s a link to the story: https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-03-29/coronavirus-choir-outbreak

Oh, and on the good news front - the baby cranes are starting to make their adorable appearance. And I do think there are many businesses that could reopen at reasonably low risk to people with some precautions, I’m just not sure gyms are one of those businesses.

Re-opening will probably depend on the gym or gym-type.

For example, I went to a charity benefit a couple years ago at Soul Cycle and that place was really small with nearly no space between the bicycles. I’d never go there again. I wouldn’t pre-C-virus anyway, but Covid-19 makes it less than zero probability.

Now, my gym has a limited number of memberships in a large industrial space and a very specific clientele. And typically, no more than 5 members worked out at any one time. And depending on the time of day or weekend, I might be the only person there. The gym was always kept clean and wipes were always available. I think if you require folks to have buffs available, when getting in close proximity could be required.

A place like 24 Hour or Planet Fitness will probably have limit numbers entering their gyms and also unplug treadmills and remove some equipment in order to maintain at least 6’ of spacing. I’m not sure how that would affect fees and such, since a member could be denied entry if they work out at the 5-6 PM hour.

Based on what I’m hearing in all my work meetings regarding opening of businesses, I agree with @sushiritto that equipment is going to b spaced out either by removing some or unplugging/blocking. I am mainly a gym user when I’m injured (which I’m not right now…fingers crossed), but thinking about our neighborhood clubhouse gym, I think it could work. The cardio equipment all faces one direction so your breathing is directed at a window/wall that is well in front of the machine. I would be OK even next to another treadmill or elliptical at that particular facility. There is a bathroom right there connected to it for hand washing. I would want them to put in a hand sanitizer dispenser by the exit door. Our office gym also has the cardio equipment all facing a window but I suspect we will block some of it off.

Honestly, I thought the reason I got so sick in December/January 2018-19 was because I was using the gym we belonged to at the time more than I had been. It wasn’t COVID-19, but I did get pneumonia. I think each gym has to be assessed individually.

FWIW - the final days at Planet Fitness, they did just that. They turned off every other piece of cardio equipment, sometimes 2/3 were shut off. And I think several of the weight machines were roped off too.

I’m in a blah mood. Think it’s hormonal. But my workout this morning was good. 10 miles - that includes w/u and c/d but the middle 8-9 were good. And my cardio flow workout was good, as was my ab workout. I used shoes today - they weren’t wet.

@“Youdon’tsay” last week I would have said most definitely I’m seeing improvement. This week, I’m not as optimistic. I’m poofier in general - again, stupid hormones. But my see S sent us pics. Woah. He’s as ripped as can be. And he only has a pull-up bar, 2 dumbbell handles with plates to make 2x35 or 1x70. And he runs 3-5 miles most days. I’m jealous. I want to be a young guy!!!

@mathmom The KB work out was on YouTube. Here’s the link:

It’s pretty basic, but it is a good workout. The instructors don’t give much guidance on proper form, which I think is really important. The yoga that I do online is from the the two studios where I take classes. I like both studios and the instructors there. Both are offering virtual classes on Zoom. One also offers on demand classes.

Regarding gyms and other enclosed spaces, it isn’t just a matter of spacing, the overall airflow is important. For example, if the gym is air conditioned, the air flow can carry droplets beyond 6ft. There was a small study done regarding a restaurant with good spacing but people in line with the air flowing from a pre-symptomatic carrier got sick.

That’s a big part of what I’m thinking could happen. One heavy breather on the step mill slowly filling the gym with droplets. Just like it appears one singer in that choir practice slowly filled the practice room with droplets as they sang. No matter how large, it’s an enclosed area that doesn’t actively ventilate to the outside and the fans and AC are just recirculating the exhalations in the enclosed area. Not a huge deal if it’s a person that’s not there for more than a few minutes and who isn’t breathing heavily (like in a grocery store), but could be a big deal if an asymptomatic but C19 infected person huffs and puffs for an hour in an enclosed space.

Heck, if you have a halfway sensitive nose you already know who in the gym eats garlic or had sausage for breakfast, there is no way if you can smell them that being bathed in their particulate exhalations for a prolonged period of time doesn’t carry some risk of infection.

Outside maybe you get one whiff of someone’s breath and then they’re gone or the breeze is blowing the rest away. It’s a different thing in an enclosed area, even if you’re not right next to them, the particles are all building up and accumulating.

@bluebayou if masks are not required in all outdoor spaces in your town/county then it sounds like you were fine as long as you were keeping distance. And not hacking when you went by! That dude was probably going to give you some grief just because you were out there and “invading” his space.

Re: gyms. I don’t use mine much in the warmer weather anyway - unless it’s so, so hot. It’s a big place and has a 1/4 mile track so I could probably use that (it’s not heavily used in the summer because the majority of students are off campus) without issue. But honestly don’t know if it will be an option for a few months.

I’m of a different opinion regarding masks. I think the running community have a mask availabie to cover our face when passing folks. It might not be necessary but I think runners should provide reassurance to folks.

I’m not going back to the gym right away either. There are times when it is really empty, maybe I’d start with those times. I do want to swim. If we came in thru the outside gate and not the gym and if we limited pool use so only one person was in each lane, I think we could do it. No sharing equipment. Mindful panting. No squeezing in close together to chat.

A local lake may open up first. I really want to go, but while the CDC says pools are okay, they don’t say that about lakes.

And no peeing in the pool!

I think a lake will be just fine. IMO. Any virus-laden droplets will be diluted right away to make the concentration of the virus ? undetectable.
