I'll most likely be pursuing mathematics or cognitive science in L&S. Would it be wise to choose Foothill over the Units?

Since you’re a prospective math/cog sci major, you’ll be taking classes like Math 1A-1B and 53-54, as well as CS 61 and Math55/CS 70, all of which are classes that Engineers will be taking. You’ll feel right at home I think.

How about for physics or biology? I am still kind of undecided at this point in time, but I am almost certainly set on the maths/sciences.

Biology building is far from you but physics is pretty close. But I don’t think you really need to worry about where you live in relation to your major. Just pick a place to live at where you think you will have the most fun. I’m a business major but somehow most of my friends at Cal are actually engineers/science majors and I have no problem getting along.

Would you recommend Foothill as a “fun” dorm? I’m not really interested in the Units because I’ve heard they’re louder and more party-ish. I still want a social dorm, just not like that.

Also, I’m a liberal arts major, but I’m okay with living with the engineers.

Foothill is still good for biology majors. I lived in Bowles, Foothill, and then Bowles again the last three years (this year I am in an apt.)

Being able to get from your dorm to Pimentel in 5 minutes flat was awesome.

Units aren’t necessarily really social/loud. It depends on your floor. Also I think Beverly Cleary (sp?) hall in Unit 3 is quieter.

I completely agree - this is part of why I am leaning towards Foothill and away from the Units. Also, an unrelated question - is the food at/near Foothill as convenient/“good” as the food at/near the Units?

Here is my ranking of the dining commons, if it helps:

Foothill ~ Clark Kerr >> Cafe 3 (Unit 3) >>> Crossroads (Units 1 and 2)

Of course you don’t have to go to the DC that’s closest to where you live - Cafe 3 is still pretty close to Units 1/2. However I think Crossroads is most convenient in terms of hours open since it is the “main” DC.

How “social” each unit is varies year-to-year depending on who is on your floor. That being said, Units 1, 2, and 3 (especially 3) have a reputation for being “louder,” mostly because of their location on south campus near Telegraph.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about how convenient your residence hall is for your major. I think it’s more important to pick a unit that you enjoy for its setting. Units 1 through 3 are typical high rise dorm buildings with a very “urban” feel. Foothill, Bowles, and Stern have a foresty - almost European - feel, and are up on the hilly north side of campus where it tends to be a bit quieter. Clark Kerr is very residential and quiet. It’s a very nice area and the “campus” is very relaxing and it looks like a California mission.

All of the dining commons are pretty much the same in terms of food. Once again, though, they have vastly different settings. Clark Kerr’s DC feels church-like, Foothill’s feels like a cabin in the mountains (kind of makes me think of summer camp, but in a good way) with great views of campus and the Campanile, Cafe 3 is very chic and modern, and Crossroads is…a warehouse. :P
