For the girls... Columbia vs. Barnard

Hey girlies,

Who is also applying to Barnard?
And what are your reasons for applying? (ie. Second best thing? Back door to Columbia? etc etc)

I'm just not sure if I'll be happy at Barnard... What's your take?

And for everyone else..

What do you think of NYU?

I'm applying to both; I love New York City and think I would be happy at either. I am applying to Barnard because I love the (tiny) campus, the atmosphere seems great, and they have a great liberal arts reputation. It also has a much more relaxed feeling than Columbia. Also, it's easier to get into than Columbia. If I go to Barnard, I will not feel like I missed out on anything Columbia-wise and I would be happy there. But hey...if you won't be happy, please don't apply (I really really want to go there and don't want competition! :-))

Applying to NYU also hehe

Well I've applied Columbia ED
And I'm applying to Barnard and NYU as well.. (Soz lol.. about the competition! But even sans moi.. there will be ENOUGH competition anyway !! )

Hmm.. So Barnard's cool eh?

I think so, I loved it when I visited. I hope you get into Columbia (for both our sakes!) I am very nervous about my chances at Barnard (I think I've got basically no shot at Columbia) because I know I have a shot but 7 girls from my school are applying there, one early decision. All of us are very competitive applicants, although I have the best test scores (although probably not the best extracurriculars). Oh well...must wait till April.

Did you apply anywhere early kiki?

Don't be too nervous ... Cus sounds like you really really like Barnard. And you'll probably get in... I like to believe that people who are really into a school, end up gettin accepted there cus they love it so much.. and that love will show in the app..

I hope it shows! I applied early action to Georgetown, couldn't apply early decision anywhere because financial aid is a concern and I'm not exactly sure how much I'm going to get. My other schools are: Columbia, NYU, Georgetown, Northwestern, Boston U, Tufts, and George Washington U. My SAT is high for Barnard (1520) but GPA is 3.8 and lower than their 3.9 average, which is why I'm worried. Ahhh....

Just write a great essay and show your love for the school in your app.

I really liked Georgetown when I visited.. Gorgeous campus.
But I decided that DC wasn't a place for me..

Oh.. how did you answer your Barnard supplementary short answer qs?
Are they only meant to be a few sentences or do you expand on it? (Cus the space provided is soooo small)
And can we not do that online? I couldn't find an online form thingy so I had to print out the document.. and I presume we have to handwrite it then send it by post?

Silver-
I haven't done the short answers yet, I haven't gotten to most of my supplements (yeah I'm a procrastinator). I wouldn't go much beyond the spaces they give on the application, but I think you could include an additional sheet with more if you wanted to. You can't submit the supplement online, unfortunately, it has to be mailed.

The short answers are soooo pointless I think.
What are you gonna write for the govt. official one..
Grr.. I hate RD apps sooo much

Haha what did you write on your ED Columbia app for why you wanted to go there?

O I had tons to say for Columbia lol...

I actually just ADOOOREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE the Columbia App. I wanna do more Columbia Apps....
Maybe it's cus I'm in love with the school. But it was just fun to do...
And they don't ask useless questions like other schools.. I found the Columbia App fun and so much easier to do..
You only really have to write 2 things for Columbia

Did you do the app online? Because I hate the "boxes" you have to type in and then switch to a new line when your word won't fit. Annoying! I do appreciate no short answers though.

Yeh I did it online.. And yehhh it's a huge pain in the arssee (no space to write)!
I wish the Columbia online format was more like Brown.

But I found that it wasn't too bad.. you just can't write that much .. maybe that's a good thing?!
It's all cool though, cus Columbia reads 100% of the apps online! So everyone has equal footing..

advice for anyone applying to barnard...check the archives and other threads...i think a lot of people have advised against barnard if columbia is really your first choice b/c you'll always feel like you're missing something

i still have a hard time in class figuring out who is from barnard

Well Columbia and Barnard are my co-first choices, I would be happy at either.

i think columbia and barnard are totally different..if u visit the two campuses..the atmosphere..the people around you..how they are..its a different experience..i met this chic who goes to barnard..and she seemed really umm interestin..not saying that every girl who goes to barnard is like her..

I've heard that lots of barnard girls are lesbians. Fun.
And why would you go to barnard over columbia unless you are a weaker applicant?
