Hey guys, found out this morning that I have been rejected from my back-up school (CSU Long Beach.) I’m disappointed but I thought about it and I still have a lot of hope for UCLA. Long Beach did not have any creative samples, essays, or statements from me. All they had was my name and my GPA; so I did not take it personally. UCLA has always been my DREAM school and they have all of the materials that Long Beach did not have. UCLA will have a picture in mind of who they’re admitting, not just a number; that gives me a lot of hope. At this point, I have to just calm down and wait it out. I still have 7 letters being reviewed but UCLA will always be my home. Whatever happens guys, just know that no matter what, we’re all gonna make it somehow.
Sorry to hear that @MiniGrace11 but I like your optimism! UCLA really puts an emphasis on the supplemental materials, especially the creative sample (so I’ve heard) so you definitely still have a shot. So CSULB did not require a supplemental package? Did you apply for the Practice and Theory major instead of the Narrative Production major? I actually live in Long Beach and know people who are current film majors there, but I did not bother applying. It doesn’t seem to me like they put as much care into their Practice and Theory students as they do their Narrative Production students. I may be way off on that judgement, but that was the impression I got.
Keep your hopes up. I’m sure you’ll get into a great school and hopefully UCLA.
@northremembers Yes, I applied to the Practice and Theory major, but only because I knew that the narrative production required a portfolio that I could not have ready in time. Your impression is probably correct; I have heard similar things about how they treat the narrative students much better than the others. I have applications out at UC Riverside, Santa Cruz, San Diego, San Diego State (although I am missing a “major prep class” that shouldn’t make too much of a difference), and CSUN. I have to hold out hope for UCLA because I’ve worked too hard to give up hope before I even have an answer. My Gpa is low, (3.27) but I love that UCLA is more concerned about my talent rather than irrelevant general ed classes. Really, a 3.27 is good to me. I’m proud of myself and I recognize that I am not going to be good at every subject that I take, but if I have learned something, then I’m still happy that I took the class. I got 2 C’s and a B in ASL 1-3 and my grade does not reflect my fluency at all. I have extensive knowledge in subjects that I’ve gotten A’s, B’s, and C’s in, just because of my inability to test well 100% of the time. I am not the kind of person that a GPA can say anything about. I don’t care who I have to speak with, how many letters of appeal I have to write, or how many times that I have to apply; I am going to be a Bruin…period. UCLA is my home, student or not.
I don’t know if anybody here has seen Zootopia, but I highly recommend it. My favorite thing about the movie is the song, “Try Everything” by Shakira. If you don’t have two hours to watch the movie, take a few minutes to listen to the song. That’s what has been keeping my positive while I wait to hear from TFT
@MiniGrace11 If you don’t mind me asking, is there a specific area of study you’re mainly interested in? I know that Santa Cruz is a good choice for film studies, and CSUN seems to have a pretty good Screenwriting program. I’m not sure about Riverside or the San Diegos since I didn’t really research those. For me, I’m predominantly interested in Screenwriting, but I really want to learn a bit about all aspects of film-making as well as film history, which is why UCLA made it to the top of my list. You seem to get a very well-rounded education but still get to focus on your concentration during senior year. Your GPA is not stellar but, again, it’s all about the supplemental materials so I think you were right to apply anyway and hope for the best. That’s all any of us can do anyway! My GPA doesn’t exactly scream genius either (I have a 3.53) but I’m not worrying about that. In the end, it will all depend on the supplementals - and probably the letters of recommendation to a certain extent - so that is where most of my anxieties lie.
Also, I have not seen Zootopia, but it’s been on my Netflix List since they put it up! Maybe I’ll finally watch it this weekend (:
@northremembers I have three main areas of interest but I’m not sure as to what my concentration will be. I am torn between narrative production, animation, and screenwriting. If I get in, I’d want to take a class or two in each area before fully deciding on my concentration. I have different issues with screenwriting and animation; those being,
- I can’t draw
- I’d like to be either an animation writer that can write for any genre or a comedy writer but my best work is Drama.
I think I just need to explore each area in depth because of the pros and cons I have for each (and I don’t think you can double-concentrate), so I’ll have to see when the time comes. I applied to CSUN as a Television Production major because I prefer T.V work over film (because of growing up in a family based in TV work, I find it to be interesting), but CSUN is not my top choice due to the area, and because It does not give me the same sense of home, community, and support that I found at UCLA. UCR and UCSD don’t really have what I need…I just wanted to see if I could get in. SDSU is okay, but the location doesn’t help with networking, internships, and connections (same with UCSC.) CSU LB had more of the social life I was looking for; as close as I could get to the UCLA experience. If i don’t get into TFT, I’ll probably go to CSUN for undergrad and go to UCLA as a graduate student, but I still have hope for my dream school.
…that was all very cheesy…but all very true lol
Considering that Elise got an interview, that must mean if other freshman applicants haven’t by now, I guess it’s time to look for other places to go…
@NickFraser98 wait you applied as a film undergrad right?
I called the TFT office for clarification about the interviews. Film majors DO NOT get interviews UNLESS they have follow-up questions or need clarification about something that was in your essay or application.
@MiniGrace11 Really? For freshman applicants? That would be awesome. Though I guess they only ask follow-up questions if they’re interested in your application…Anyway, everything is still promising.
oh…That…i didn’t ask. I just called and asked when they would be requesting interviews and the woman told me that there was no Film undergrad interview unless they needed you to elaborate on something that was unclear in the paperwork/ supplemental materials. I believe she said that not very many people get the “interview” as undergrads but it has no impact on an admissions decision.
however, I am a transfer student, so I’m not sure if that’s a different process. I would call on Monday and ask, though.February is almost over which means freshman decisions come out next month! @AlastairYang
I think we all still hold a good chance! I think if we all get in (and maybe even if we don’t) we could all network anyway. We never know where we will be after graduation and it would be an honor to work with all of you.
Oh thank God. I got so worried, so scared there. It seems they just don’t communicate that part very well unless you speak to them directly, hopefully this means we all still have a shot. My heart absolutely sank for about three days in a row.
@MiniGrace11, we would all certainly make some fantastic art, even outside of UCLA if we don’t get in. Who says we need to go to the same school to put together a film?
@MiniGrace11 Sure we will. School won’t define our route!
So true! Do you guys have a backup/safety school?
This is going to sound strange, but I’ve been given a large scholarship to a Catholic film school called John Paul the Great Catholic University in Escondido, California, only an hour south of LA. It’s likely where I’ll go if I don’t get accepted to UCLA. I’m not that religious, but it’s a California film school that’s paying me to go, so I can’t turn it down.
For film school, I only apply to UCLA TFT and NYU Tisch. Tisch deferred me from ED2 to RD, which seems really strange since previously I have no idea that Tisch would defer applicants. Besides these two, for the other colleges I apply for Sociology and Anthropology. These are my two academic interests that I’d like to explore as undergraduate. Anyway, if I’m accepted as a film school student, I’ll do it. If not, after four years, I’ll still apply for film. I’ll take it as my lifelong career.
I sort of took a little too much inspiration from Legally Blonde and only applied to one school lol.
@northremembers …well legally blond was filmed at UCLA so…maybe that’s not a bad thing!
@NickFraser98 hey! that’s great! glad you have a backup set in stone!
@AlastairYang that’s cool it’s always good to have a background in other subjects! who knows, maybe you’ll make a movie about what you learn from them!
this is kind of off topic but does anyone else plan to do greek rush in the fall???
@MiniGrace11 Definitely no rushing for me! That sort of stuff just doesn’t appeal to me much. I do hope to join some clubs though,
@northremembers I feel you! It’s not for everyone
