Paramitas I have a question - were you able to use the unabridged FAFSA for other schools? We received a letter offering us free access to a professional FAFSA service through Fordham which I plan on calling soon. But can I use this for all the schools my son was admitted to?

Just jumping in here, Kat 2013: Yes, the FAFSA service provided by Fordham does send the report to all requested schools, for free. We used it for all 8 schools on my daughter’s list.

Thanks My3Daughters! One other question, I though FAFSA could only be applied for after January 1st 2013 for fall 2013 entry. Do they hold everything until then?

jj1119, I think it’s very possible that those who were given the Semifinalist scholarship may not be invited to Experience Fordham, because the school has given us enough incentive already to attend. The board could as be trying to increase geographic diversity. Whatever the reason, I assume it costs the school a good deal of money, so not all top applicants will be invited.

Kat2013: The company referred to by Fordham said they would notify us in January for any additional materials required – I assume W2 forms, etc.

jj and mongo, I’m almost certain Experience Fordham is for people from distant lands who might not otherwise get more than the standard campus tour. If you live two hours away, you’re only a little bit farther than the most distant commuters, so the admissions people expect you’ll make time for a good visit anyway (and that you already know people here whom you can tap for an extended tour). I don’t think it has to do with your already having received such nice scholarships–like mongo said, it’s demographic engineering; I had a larger scholarship but was invited from CA.

I don’t agree. Sorry. I don’t have any stats, but just anecdotal reports. Gabelli School is at Rose Hill. I think they clearly lean center right. A high number of students at Rose Hill come from conservative catholic schools around the country.

If I were to guess, I would put the ratio at near 50/50. But in any respect, Fordham is largely apolitical…most kids just focused on their classes and socializing. But its no hotbed of left wing politics to be certain.

post script edit: WHOOPS! Wrong thread! Sorry. I will move it to political thread.

Hmm, I think tomorrow’s mail will prove the theory of Experience Fordham. I live in WA, a distant and rainy land, and have the NMSF scholarship. The only problem is that I may not qualify as a top applicant…

I wasn’t invited to Experience Fordham; but I live in Massachusetts and I’ve already visited. It’s only a 4 hour drive.

Great, thanks for the info - My3Daughters!

So I got invited to Explore Fordham too, but I’ve only been offered the Dean’s scholarship even though I’m a national merit semifinalist and national hispanic scholar. Two years ago my brother was offered a full ride to Fordham and his credentials weren’t as good as mine. I was wondering if there might have been a mistake with my scholarship? Because the letter says Explore Fordham is only for 50 people so if i’m in the top 50 shouldn’t I be getting the full ride semifinalist instead of the dean’s?

What state are u from bokonist?

Bokononist, it depends on how many they are giving out now/later/this year and the criteria the board is using for both programs.

I live in Florida so that could be why they want to offer me a visit. I’m just worried because I really like Fordham, and I was counting on the full ride to be able to afford it. Is there somewhere people that got the semifinalist scholarship have posted their stats?

Here are mine:
SAT: 2250
CR: 800
Math: 690
Writing: 760

GPA: 4.58
Rank: 1/394 (just a public high school)

Extra curricular activities: Model UN four years (my school was ranked 4th in the country last year), varsity basketball four years and team captain, varsity tennis four years, varsity cross country two years, President of Environmental club, treasurer then vice president of NHS, Mock trial

Community service: Youth basketball coach for almost three years now, hospitality minister at church, toys for tots, relay for life, salvation army bell ringing, and a bunch of other stuff i’ve done with NHS

Essay: solid, i think. It wasn’t spectacular but it wasn’t poor either

Awards: National Merit semifinalist; National Hispanic Scholar; AP scholar with Honor

Bokononist, I got the Experience Fordham invite as well (Dean’s Scholarship, from California) The email I received from the organizer confirming that I signed up said that 300 people were sent the offer for about 60 slots. I’m not sure whether that’s 60 slots for RH and 60 for LC or 60 all together. A friend of mine got Experience Fordham as well, though I applied LC and she applied RH.

Hi all,

Were financial aid packages supposed to have come with the admission letter?

Has anybody heard back from the admissions director about experience Fordham? I received the invitation and sent her an email on 12/22, but i havent gotten a response.

@Infinite
Nope. I only got an estimate of financial and merit aid. Not an actual package. I think they come in January.

D was accepted to Fordham EA. No mention of merit or need based aid. I completed the application with SFAS and am now waiting.
D was also accepted to Fairfield, Providence and Manhattan with non-need merit awards of 22K, 17K and 17K per year respectively. (Also applied to Barnard, will not hear back until March.)

Do these awards from other schools provide any benefit to us with Fordham? (I know FA officers don’t like the word “negotiate” and we don’t need a dollar for dollar match as we are willing to pay a reasonable premium for Fordham, but want to get the best FA package possible.)Thoughts?

Yes, Standish, I am curious as well. My D has low SATs, and though we are thrilled she was accepted EA to Fordham, her estimate merit was very low (still thankful though). She was accepted to another NY school with 20K merit. I know that I can’t really compare that school to Fordham…but it’s a tough choice. Fordham is her first choice and my question is…I have heard that the estimate may increase in February and again in April. I just wonder how often that happens. For instance, she was accepted at Emerson (has since changed her mind about going to a school only for writing so she won’t attend). No merit and Emerson was quite clear that they would not negotiate, nor re-apply merit from applicants who have chosen not to attend. A few days later they sent her a knit hat in the mail, which actually we thought was kinda cute. So, as my husband says, Fordham’s offer is better than a hat!
