3.95 and 1880 GPA accepted for Chemistry at Rose Hill with no financial aid as of yet. 2 AP’s completed, Working on 2 AP’s and one Honors. Decade of martial arts, 2 years of speech, 4 years of band, 2 years of NHS, 3 years of NSHS, 3 years of California Scholarship Federation, research experience with WSSP through Rutgers University. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask. :)

My DD was accepted on 12/15 at Lincoln Center with housing. Hopefully we’ll get something later with respect to scholarships. Stats: 3.88 uw/4.12 w GPA, 27 ACT, 5 AP’s, 4 years Varsity XC/TF, lettered, 3x State Champs, All-State, All-Region, 2 years Swimming, lettered, Communications Prefect, Theater, Chorus, yearbook, NHS, Beta Club, Ventures Scholar, High Honor Roll, Key Club, etc.

musicmom:

Not sure how to understand your decision to apply to Lincoln Center with an athlete daughter. Is she majoring in theatre at Fordham? Did she audition? Why didnt she apply to RH and why didnt she look for an athletic scholarship in XC/TF or Swimming?

Just on academics, I am sorry to suggest, its not likely she gets any scholarship money. A 27 ACT isnt high enough. A 3.88 gpa is excellent but also sorta familiar among applicants. Merit scholarships generally go to the top 10% of applicants. There are some exceptions with restricted scholarships sometimes going to graduates of local catholic schools, but generally not the case.

If you applied for financial aid, you may get a generous university grant, which is like a scholarship without the prestige, only need based.

I was deferred, and frankly, I was very insulted by the deferral. I have a 3.92 UW GPA at a private Catholic high school known for its prestige. My class rank is also in the top 2%. My ACT wasn’t spectacular (28 one time sitting - 29 superscored), but my EC’s were extremely solid. I am president of my school’s Social Justice Club. I am involved with NHS (officer), Choir (section leader), Track and Field (captain), Altar Serving, Youth Group (Student Leader), Student Council (officer), and lots of volunteering (300 hours combined at high school, parish, and retirement center). My essay was pretty solid; I talked about practicing virtue, and how it led to happiness within my life. I referenced St. Thomas Aquinas and expressed my desire to major in either Theology or Philosophy. Two teacher recommendations were very good, and my counselor’s recommendation was spectacular; I am close with him and know he highly endorsed me as one of the hardest working students in my class.
The only thing I can think of is for my intended major, I stated “Mathematics.” I am considering a double major in Math and Philo/Theo, and just decided to say Math in case spots within that specific college would fill up. I guess my stats aren’t amazing for math (I won two math competitions, but my ACT M was a 27). I very much enjoy the subject, but I guess I completely left it out of my application.
That is honestly the only reason I think I was deferred. Can someone shed some light on me? What do you think?
Median SAT is 1265. It was your ACT score.
Hang in there.
I would email them reiterating your interest in attending. I would also have your guidance counselor call to see if they could find out any info.
Soli,
You will definitely be in under regular decision. You would make a great Fordham student and I hope you do attend. This is the time that you need to look at all your acceptances and pick the college that is a great fit for you and gives excellent financial aid–whether it is Fordham or not. Many fine colleges would be very happy to have you in their September Freshman class.
@Honourstudent @sovereigndebt @desie1 Thank you for the responses. It was just really frustrating when I read the deferral message. I know this happens every year: qualified students are deferred and rejected, and they take it very hard. I have worked my tail off the past 4 years, getting involved with many EC’s while taking a rigorous course schedule (4 AP’s, 13 Honors) and keeping my grades up. I know my ACT is right around the median (1250-1280 on the SAT is around a 28 on the ACT), but I am just not entirely convinced that is the real reason why I was deferred. I have seen others get accepted EA this year with >28 ACT and >1250 SAT, most of whom don’t have any real hooks. I will stay optimistic that I get accepted RD, but this worries me for Notre Dame U and others.
Notre Dame can be a tough one. I know many exceptional students who did not get Notre Dame. Curiously, what other colleges did you apply to? Early admission is a very quirky process and you cannot take it personally.
@HONOURSTUDENT In all sincerity, ND is my #1. Fordham is definitely up there, but I would not call it a blatant #1. I applied to ND regular decision because of my ACT. I thought I could raise it a little, but despite a lot of studying, it didn’t come up too much My supplemental essays for ND are my pride and joy though; I worked on those things for about 2 months and I am very proud of them. I was also elected NHS president and was able to squeeze that on my application to ND. So I am president of two important clubs, Social Justice and NHS. I really like how my ND application came together. Again, ACT is probably below what they want to accept. But all my EC’s and essays mix very well with my intended major at ND: Theology or Philosophy. I am also doing an independent study on the those two subjects sponsored by my school, and I slipped that into my ND application (something Fordham and many others didn’t see).
Other colleges:
(EA)
Case Western - Deferred
Dayton - Pending
(Rolling)
Xavier - Accepted
Saint Vincent’s - Accepted
Ave Maria - Pending
Walsh - Accepted
Notre Dame College - Accepted
Notre Dame U - Pending
It is a decent list. I am really hoping my application to Notre Dame makes me stand out a little bit. After all, they do a “holistic review” of every student, just like Fordham. I think my ND application differed tremendously from my Fordham app though. I was able to write 3 supplemental essays, and in turn, hopefully show them I am not a boring person. Definitely best of luck to everyone who applied to ND and Fordham. There are many qualified students, a lot much more qualified than me. I am just hoping to “sneak” into Notre Dame because it is truly my dream.
@SoliDeoGloria1 It’s not Notre Dame U – it’s U of Notre Dame
@coolkid999 No, actually it is the University of Notre Dame du Lac. Friend, I was typing very quickly, and I accidently said it backwards. Please refrain from the snarky responses.
@SoliDeoGloria1 Sorry, it’s just a pet peeve of mine.
@coolkid999 It won’t happen again. Just typing faster than I can think right now
@coolkid999 I apologize too. Just kind of irritable right now. Sorry
Soli, Best of luck with ND but don’t put all your eggs in the ND basket. If you get in fantastic but don’t be too disappointed if you don’t. You already have 4 great colleges that you are accepted to and will get many more in April! Don’t be irritable today. You should be very proud of your record so far.
Soli, I am surprised that you didn’t apply to Boston College and Georgetown.
@HONOURSTUDENT Thank you very much for your helpful responses. I know I can’t let it get to my head. Notre Dame is my #1 but it won’t be the end of the world if I don’t get in. I thought about Boston College but ended up not applying. BC is an excellent school, but I just didn’t pursue it.
Every year this happens. It happened to us. Every year very well qualified students (gpa a better factor in my opinoin because its work and not '“gaming the system” with a test on one day…like some do) get deferred or rejected.
Admissions is bizarre. They overlook good kids and take sometimes marginal kids for reasons unbeknownst to us. Often for geographical, sociological, economic diversity. or sometimes athletes. or legacy.
Also some schools are feeder schools and they have an “in” with admissions. They deny it but its DEFINITELY there at Fordham.
its not personal, btw, its just a brutal system.
We had tears from EA/ED decisions in 06. Then quickly regrouped and focused on RD and then had a bunch of offers, including scholarships.
Dont panic. Dont be bitter. Just focus on round 2. Dont blame Fordham. They take kids from the deferred list every year.
Notre Dame btw is a very good school. But its prestige that allures lots of applicants. Make sure its the school where you will fit and EXCEL. And they typically defer or reject anyone under 1400 SATs.
I dont know what the accurate ACT is for a 1265 SAT. But that is the MEDIAN score, the precise 50th percentile point of applicants (not admittees). Being in the upper 75th percentile is better than the 50th. Just the facts.
However, Fordham does look at the whole application and you may be very high on the deferral list.
Fordham is NYC. Notre Dame is in South Bend (gary) Indiana. If you get into Fordham RD then you can come and excel and have the last laugh. My kid accepted RD at Fordham (didnt apply EA at all), and then did exceptionally well…Phi Beta Kappa (to give you some evidence on what can happen if you work hard and not dependent on some stupid one day exam).
Dry your tears. Focus on the next round. Send Fordham your intent letter…be genuine. And I hope it works out.
Sorry, put U Notre Dame under rolling admissions. There are definitely not rolling but RD.
