So Foster just started notifying everybody and if you are among one of those who got accepted -- congrats!

The purpose of this thread is to help you with the transition. Feel free to ask any questions related to Foster or the UW in general. Hopefully other current students will help you.

I'm a transfer student, senior at Foster. Majoring in Accounting, so I know more about this major than any other.

The advice I gave to yellowsmith also applies to you, I guess :-)

My first advice would be to actually decide on your major. I don’t know if you’ve taken Finance classes before and if you know what it actually entails. So, I would get an exposure to what Finance is in the first quarter. That’s essential. In case you don’t like it you can have more time to think about an alternate major.

Hi seatac. I was just accepted to the University of Washington and still waiting on foster’s notifications for transfer students. I am also planning on majoring in accounting. Which classes would you suggest for the first quarter there? Also, do you have any tips on how to get more involved, etc?

Thanks a lot seatac! I think I really need to figure out what finance is about first in winter and then decide if I should change to another one.

@marslove3, I think that your advisers most likely will put you into classes. The thing is that they usually have specific spots reserved in specific classes for transfer students b/c you can’t register for them until after everybody in the business school registers. Most likely, you will get ACCTG 301, BCMU 301 and some other class. The first two are a must for the first quarter, especially if you are in accounting (ACCTG 301 is a weed out that gives you a taste of accounting). For the third class, I recommend IS 300 or FIN 350. Take it slow the first quarter and then in the second you can start taking 4 classes. For the second I would recommend ACCTG 302, ACCTG 320, MGMT 300 and one other class.

How to get more involved – join Beta Alpha Psi. There are professionals coming to the meetings who talk about what they do on a daily basis as accountants, plus this is a great way to participate in activities BAP offers. Do consider VITA as one of them – it’s a great way to learn how to prepare taxes and builds your resume pretty well. Let me know if you have any questions about that (I understand that it might be not very clear during the first weeks what’s going on around).

Okay thank you so much seatac! You are so helpful! I am just wondering when exactly the orientation dates will be. I know you have to attend them in order to register for classes. Do you know when they usually are? :)

Okay thank you! What happens if I get into the UW and not the foster school? Then will I still continue to take classes at the UW or what? I am a transfer and have all the prerequisites finished from a community college with the AA in business.

Hey SeaTac, I just got accepted into Accounting, Besides ACCTG 301, and BCMU 301, which class in your opinion should I take along side those two? Which class is the least work intensive, so I could focus attention on the accounting classes?

Also, I have orientation soon, and I’m wondering what happens at orientation. Thanks man, also feel free to give any advice to a newly accepted Accouting major

@CokeZer0, I would say IS 300 is your best bet. If you know enough about computers then this class won’t be very hard and time-consuming for you. It’s also a prereq for ACCTG 320, which you might want to get out of the way as soon as possible because it’s a prereq for ACCTG 411. Also, IS 300 might help you because you will sort of learn Excel there, and Excel is a must in Accounting and will be quite helpful in your finance class.

Different stuff… I guess it depends on the teacher. It’s mainly about computer systems use in business and such. There are labs related to Excel, Access and some other stuff. And yes, sometimes you do get tested on certain concepts of software.

Hey guys, if you are undecided about your major OR if you have questions about the business school in general, you are welcome to attend this event organized by my friend’s club:

facebook.com/events/172739016257437/

Do you know about the options in business school? Do you know which one is best for you? Do you want to learn more?

Ascend UW and BITS are co-hosting a night where you’ll be able to find more about each option. You’ll have the opportunity to personally ask some upperclassmen about their experiences and advices they may have for you.

There are many options like Accounting, Entrepreneur, Marketing, Human Resources, Finance, Information Systems, etc… Take this opportunity and get the ins and outs about each option that is available for you!

ALL STUDENTS from all majors, backgrounds, years, etc. are welcomed! Come out and get involved in Foster and get to know your community!

@seatac- Is it possible to apply for Beta Alpha Psi and VITA now or do I have to wait until after orientation? How exactly do I get involved in them? I want to take full advantage of my experience at the University, so any tips or advice is very much appreciated! :)

I believe you have to wait until the quarter starts. Once it starts, you can do it on the first day and then you can attend a BAP meeting on that same week and register for VITA training (held January 11th/12th and 18th/19th).

Hi, I am going to be a junior accounting major. Anyways, its been about nine months since I did financial accounting. I have been reviewing my textbook, but am worried that might not be enough preparation for accounting 301. Any suggestions for me to review? Was there an ease in process for 301 concerning concepts/terminology or did you hit the ground running?

Don’t worry about that. I was also concerned about it, but you are going to review the most basic stuff anyway. 301 is where you switch from plain journal entries to more conceptual stuff. It’s a hard class, but doable.

Any suggestions on when to start applying for internships for the summer and which ones to apply for? I know they said we can start applying now, but I kind of want to wait until the quarter starts and after I can update my resume a bit. Will it be too late?
