Found 20 bucks- ethical dilemma

I found 20 bucks and am unsure of what to do with it. Keep it or try to find the original owner? If it was a dollar I wouldn't really care- but this is 20 bucks we're talking about.

I have a feeling that if I lost 20 bucks nobody would try to get it back to me. I also think it would be impossible to find out who it would belong to- many people would claim or suspect that they might have lost 20 bucks.

Should I play finders keepers?

Depends where you found it. If it's on the street, I'd keep it. If it were in my dorm, I'd find out who lost it.

where did you find it?

There is a question of game theory- what if multiple people claimed that it was theirs? Then should I keep it?

Also, not everyone counts their money(most people probably don't)- it would be hard to determine whose actually is missing 20.

Furthermore, how would I go about doing it? Should I go knocking door to door?

Found a $20 yesterday...at the movie theatre. It was the first showing so very few people could have dropped it. Found it between the ticket counter and the ticket taker. Turned it in to the ticket taking guy...hope he did the right thing with it.

I would keep it if you found it around campus or on the street. In the dorms..turn it in.

I agree with what everyone else has said. It would be difficult to find the person who actually lost it. But if it doesn't feel right to keep it, donate it to your favorite charity.

You found it in the dorm right?
Turn it into the dorm office (they should have a lost and found.) If you don't blab about it the only person who should be looking for it is the person who lost it. It's the best you can do.

are you kidding? Keep it! 20 dollars is hardly a noticable amount, put it in your wallet and consider yourself a winner. I'm sure the person who lost it has either forgotten about it by now or never even noticed.

There is no dilemma. Keep the $20. End of story.

keep that ish

You could say that you found some money and that the person that identifies the amount to you gets it back. A similar thing happened to me many years ago - I was in line at KFC. I just gave it to the cashier.

If you find money in an isolated place, KEEP IT!!!

It's not like you know or saw who personally dropped it. Keep it for yourself. Sometimes it's good luck.

No name? Keep it.

Two weeks ago there was a sign on the bathroom door in one of the academic buildings saying something to the extend of "Money found. Identify the amount and the time you lost it and you can pick it up (somewhere)." That being said, I would vote for keeping the money as well...

Where did you find it? If it was in a facility or a dorm, I'd turn it in to someone. Otherwise, I'd probably donate half to charity and keep the other half myself.

I'd keep the $20.

I would keep it.

if it were in a wallet with identification definitely turn it in... but all by itself there's nothing wrong with keeping it.

If I lost $20 I'd never even think of checking with lost and founds, I'd just assume it was gone forever.

I've had people pick up and return money that they saw me drop. I would not have noticed that I had dropped the money if they hadn't returned it. I applaud their honesty.

If, however, they had found the money, and hadn't seen me drop it, it would have been fine with me if they kept the money. In the off chance that I figured out that I was missing the money, there's no way that I would know where I'd dropped it. I would not have gone to a lost and found to see if anyone turned it in.

So -- if the money was in a place like your dorm room floor or the bathroom that you and your roommate share with just one other dorm room, try to find the owner. Of course, if the money was in a wallet with ID, certainly look for the owner. Otherwise, keep it.

It's wonderful that you're honest, but odds are slim that you or anyone else can find a way to return the money to its owner.

often when someone is looking for a "solution" to an ethical dilemma they are actually looking for justification to make the easy rather than the right choice. If you really want to know what you should do,

post the sign described above in post 14
if no one comes forward to claim it, in a week or so keep or donate it with a clear heart

one time i found 20 bucks and got chipotle.
