Over the years, I have heard so much about the "Big Six" sororities at the University of Texas. Which sororities comprise the "Big Six.?" Is there a comparable list to the "Big Six" sororities for fraternities?

On the other hand, which fraternities and sororities are more likely to take members whose families are not well connected or rich or more established? Which sororities and fraternities more or less know who they will be accepting for rush?

If you are looking to join a fraternity, don’t bother, unless you are prepared to surrender your dignity. I think sororities might have a little more class. Although I’m not 100% sure about that!

Why 2 K - I am not a him. I’m a mom. I’m sorry that you are so naive. I was butt-dialed and I heard the whole conversation. It is still happening.

Oh sorry, with a name like windowBOB I kinda assumed you were a guy.

And I guess it depends on the fraternity. I can honestly say I was not hazed in the least bit. Period. Seriously. I know tons of actives claim there is no hazing to get more people to join and to prevent legal problems, but I really wasn’t hazed at all.

Just FYI, about the “Big Six”:
The term was created by a lady named Prudence Mackintosh who at the time was writing for Texas Monthly. She named names and called out 6 sororities at UT * in the 1970s. *

This means very little today. There are many good sororities at UT, not just the ones mentioned in another post. It depends on who you are and what you are looking for. I know little about the fraternities, but like sororities, they are all different and appeal to different people.

^^^you are 100% correct! The Big 6 was concocted in the 1970’s by a writer from Texas Monthly. Some of the sororities that are at UT now, weren’t even at UT when she wrote the article. UT has a VERY competitive recruitment process and it behoove any girl going through to keep an open mind. Ranking sororities is extremely un-PanHellenic and not looked upon well…I would refrain from listening to anyone that refers to The Big Six.

ALL of the 14 houses at UT have great things to offer and honestly most of the time the very people ranking them have no idea what they are talking about…ie frat boys or girls that rushed and either dropped out or got cut from all of the houses…yes, ALL of the houses cut girls, especially those that come in with a bad attitude. Most of the girls in sororities have friends in other houses and they WILL talk to each other.

Why on earth would anyone listen/make decisions based on what a boy has to say about a particular sorority. Unless that boy is a member, he honestly has no idea what the girls are like. Also keep in mind that no matter what the sorority is, they all have mixers, formals, casuals, date parties, etc. and a lot to offer.

I am not as much in the know about the fraternities, but I do know that they are all pretty much the same. There are some that are a little better known or larger, but for the most part, they are all worthy of consideration.

Edited to add: Bevopilots is a new poster and has no idea what he/she is talking about. The sororities/fraternities that he/she listed are fine, but in no way are they the only “good” ones. The “good” one is the one that you fit into the best and will be the most happy with at the end. At the end of the day, they are all pretty much the same. As someone said recently, they should just put all of the names of the rushes in a hat and draw them out for each house…that would probably be just as effective as the recruitment process!

You sound horribly, if the frat your son chose or the requirements of his pledge period were not activities we was comfortable with he did not have to participate.

Your son is now a grown adult who could have said no, depledged and left at anytime, period.
