Im looking for a dorm close to dining, gym, and the bio/ chem/ psych classes. Ive taken a look at the Yulee area, Graham and Simpson, as well as the traditional Broward/ Jennings setup. I want a social dorm that is also quiet when it needs to be. does anyone have any reccomendations on some nicer dorms in terms of cleanliness and any information that the site does not provide?

Sounds like you need a magic dorm that’s in multiple places at once. Most of the dorms are kinda crummy, UF’s dorms aren’t the envy of the world. The gym that’s in central campus is fairly small, and to get to the rec center (which is an amazing gym) you’ll be treking several miles or riding a bus. Any of the dorms will be reasonably close to one of the dining halls.

Haha I know, I’ve been in the dorms several times; I’m a five time legacy. I was just wondering what’s the best fit that hits most of those points.

Graham area (Graham/Simpson/Trusler) wouldn’t be a bad pick. You can take the bus by simpson to get to the bigger gym by lakeside. The dining hall is a short walk by Weaver/East. If the dorm is loud, there is a large study area above the common area for all 3 dorms. Its traditional dorm, so most likely will be social. Simpson is a all-freshmen dorm. Any bus going up G-L drive will stop at the hub, so you can walk to the chem classes once you get to the hub stop. Bio/psych/physics are a short walk from the hume/graham/simpson/trusler.

Yulee/Mallory/Reid would be nicer/newer because of they just did renovations on those 3 dorms recently (~2-3 years ago).

no, Trusler is all freshmen, not simpson

It could have changed to Trusler. When I was there, Simpson was the only dorm on campus that was designated freshmen only. You actually got priority for the following year for picking another dorm, because you could not return to Simpson.

yeah, maybe. Trusler has the leader/Scholar program, so that is why it is only freshman, maybe that program was in Simpson before. Also, Murphree K section is only sophmores, so they get the priority pick for next year also.

The leader program was in Trusler when I was in Simpson, but there was still second years in Trusler, however they were in the minority. On another note, I hope no one picks a residence hall based on the “learning community” programs. Most of the programs were either lacking in programming or IMO a waste of time.

NO WAY! I am in Trusler, and it is seriously amazing. it is a great way to meet people and get involved. maybe when they first started the programs, it wasn’t good, but now the learning communities are awesome, and I would recommend them over any other dorm

also, all the peer mentors and RA’s in Trusler are all sophomores, so maybe that is the sophomores that you were seeing?

That’s great that they improve the program.

That was really helpful, thank you. I have Hume as my first in the event that I’m accepted for honors and then graham as my second

I disagree! The UF Housing Residence Halls can be very nice! They are where I’ve met some of my best friends!!

I was reading up an I hear that Hume isn’t really all its cracked up to be, it’d just expensive. Would I have a better experience at graham even if I’m in honors and be able to have Hume across the street with my advisors?

How is the community bathroom situation? im thinking about Beaty to avoid it but it’s more expensive so…

The community bathroom is really the way to meet people. My S is in Broward this year as a Freshman and agrees that without the bathroom down the hall, he would have never met his large circle of new friends from his dorm floor. You just naturally strike up conversations in the hallway and brushing your teeth, etc. Now, he has signed an apartment lease for Fall, his sophmore year, with 3 of the guys from his dorm floor who he really gets along with. S recommends that everyone do this living style the first year, to meet a circle of friends, and then go with a suite style or upperclassman dorm (or get an apartment) your sophmore year, rooming with the friends you met your freshman year.
