Freshman Dorms for Fall 2019?

Ok so I have a really good housing number (early 100s), and most of my friends have in the 4,000s. I’m getting a random roommate. I’m focused on school, so I like having my space. Are any apartment style dorms (such as Ragans) going to be open for freshman this fall? What apartment-style dorms are open to freshman generally? And what hall has the biggest suite-style rooms?

ok well I’m stupid i meant fall 2018 but whatever

Traditions and Ragans are the most popular apartment style dorms which makes them the hardest to get. They are especially desired because you get a single bedroom with a shared bathroom. Ragans is set up as 4 single bedrooms with 2 bathrooms and Traditions has two single bedrooms with 1 bathroom. McCollum and Rogers are also apartment style but the bedroom is shared (two beds per bedroom). Here’s what I’d do if I were you: when your log in time comes look at Ragans and Traditions first for any openings. The open spots in rooms will be few and far between because returning students (sophomores and up) pretty much only want those dorms or they move on to apartments. If you can’t get a spot in Ragans or Traditions then maybe try for a single in the newer dorms Azalea and Magnolia, followed by Dorman and Deviney. With your low number you could probably get a single if you want one. Singles still share a bathroom with the suite on the other side but usually you end up with more space than half a double room. Price wise a single in the main dorms (Azalea etc) runs about $3,740 a semester compared to $3,310 for a double and $3,655 for a single in Ragans apartment style.

If I didn’t want to completely isolate myself, should I choose a double with a private bath? or would having the suite next door share a bath be okay. what about gilchrist? it seems really central (and close to chick fil a)

Honestly, there isn’t a big difference in location between Gilchrist, Landis, Azalea, Magnolia, Dorman and Diviney. They are all with a two block area and easy to get to classes from. Azalea is convenient because it has a food court in the building. Gilchrist is closest to the Suwannee dining hall if you intend to buy a dining plan (which is no longer required by the way). A double with a private bath would be a nice choice because most bathrooms are shared with 4 people, but even with 4 that is totally fine. Being only a year old I think Azalea and Magnolia are among the most desired mainly due to their newness. Gilchrist is older and as such a bit dingier. Still, they are all perfectly good choices so don’t worry too much.

@Searching2020 Since you know so much about the dorms… Do you know which floors on Azalea/Magnolia have windows that open? I heard the top floor doesn’t, but the 3rd floor does. It seems like it would be nice to be able to open your windows in the winter. Thanks!

@Searching2020 I second that question… which dorms have windows that open?

My daughter says she’s not sure which dorms have windows that open. She spent two years in the dorms and she never once tried to open hers. Her comment was “they tell you you’re not to supposed to open the windows”. Lol. So perhaps opening windows is a moot point, if they advise you not to.
