Freshman dorms?

Can anyone please give a short description of each one of the available freshmen dorms? Please include walking distance to classes/dining halls/etc. Thank you so much!

oh and can anyone please list all the south campus dorms and all the north campus dorms please? Thanks

Ugh. Vast topic.

I’ll give you the lowdown on south campus, from my limited perspective.

Morrison (co-ed suite)- Its the dorm everyone wants to stay in. Its modern, has great facilities (an awesome game room, and such) and good rooms too. Its a 2 minute (I’m not kidding) walk to Rams Head Dining, and about 10 minutes to Lenoir.

Hardin (co-ed suite)- Its located behind Morrison. Facilities aren’t as good, and its really quiet, but the rooms are really nice. Small dorm, used to be called Morrison South. So small that it doesn’t even have its own community office. 2.5 minute walk to Rams, 10.5 to Lenoir. Or maybe 11, because you have to go uphill for a while while walking past Morrison.

Horton (co-ed suite)- Rooms and all are like Hardin, except its bigger. Big enough to have its own community office. Located across the street, which is a pain, because you have to cross the street et al. 5 minutes from Rams, 15 to Lenoir.

Hinton James (co-ed suite)- The high-rise thats filled with freshman. Basic facilities and rooms, classic freshman experience, located next to the basketball stadium thing, which is a bad thing because its so far south. I think its the furthest south of all the dorms. 10 minutes (uphill!) walk to Rams, don’t bother going to Lenoir.

Ehringhaus (co-ed suite)- I’ve only been to this dorm once. 50% of the rooms have AC, but Housing says it’ll be 100% by this summer. Dorms are really old. The elevator was installed in 1964 (or 1974?), so that gives you an idea of how old it is.
Its just really old, you don’t want to stay there.

I’ll cover the others later.

Thank you! Is horton north or south?
Also, could you please tell me a little about Joyner and carmichael?
Thank you so much, it was really helpful, I really appreciate it!

Horton is south. All the dorms above are south. I have limited experience with north-campus dorms.

Others will be able to describe Carmichael and Joyner better; I’ve never been to those.

Have you checked out this section at Carolina’s website:
[Residence Halls by Location | UNC Chapel Hill Housing and Residential Education](http://housing.unc.edu/residence-halls/location)

It has all the general details (such as location) as well as maps and floor plans of each dorm.

I live in Carmichael. It is a nice dorm with a lot of athletes. The rooms are quite small, but the close location to classes more than makes up for it. It is suite-style with 8 people to a bathroom with 2 stalls, 2 sinks, and a shower. My only complaint is the less than adequately-sized laundry room. Eight washers to 600+ people is simply not enough, but it is a minor quibble.
Joyner has an awesome location. You would be literally steps away from the union and lenoir, and it is hall style. You best chance of getting in that community would be to join substance-free, which is really not that competitive (for obvious reasons). I have a freshman friend there now, and she loves it.

I live in ehaus and it is not THAT bad. I would say it is the second-best high rise since you can take the ehaus path and you don’t have to cross “the devil’s intersection.” The rooms look just like those in Craige and HJ, and the built-ins are really nice space-savers. The bathrooms look ugly, but who cares what a bathroom looks like? I went without A/C and it wasn’t too terrible, plus the dorm costs $1200 less per year than those with A/C. I think it was worth it to save the money. So yeah, if you get placed into ehringhaus and it wasn’t even on your list, don’t cry… just be glad it’s not Craige (from there, the intersection can add five minutes to your commute to classes).

can someone also give an overview whether which suites on south are 4 person and which are 8? and which dorms can you leave your shower supplies in and which dorms do you have to bring your shower supplies back and forth?
also, what differences are there between craige and e-house?

Craige sucks. I’ve lived there twice now (for break housing) and its definitely the worst dorm.

Generally you can leave your shower supplies in suite styles but not in the hall styles. Also, in the suites you clean your own bathrooms, and in the hall ones you don’t.

is craige still going to suck after the remodeling? or is it going to be the premiere dorm thats 1st on most freshmen’s list?

That is very unlikely. One of the things that sucks about Craige is the distance (plus the uphill walk). There is a lot to not like about Craige.

I’m sure it will be significantly nicer, but nobody really wants to live in Craige coming in. If you put Craige as your top choice, you will end up there.

It’s really really funny to me the notion that Craige would be the premiere freshman dorm…

so is Ehringhaus better than Craige? or would it be worse since the bathrooms are not being remodeled?
also, are the dorms built in the 1960’s more sociable than the dorms built in 2002?

I would say that Craige will be nicer because of the bathroom but Ehringhaus is a slightly better location. Tbh you just get used to kind of ****ty bathrooms and it’s not that big of a deal. Don’t get too worked up over dorms because you’ll most likely enjoy wherever you end up. But yes in general the older dorms are more sociable, mainly because the newer ones have more sophomores.
