Hello, I wanted to know whether or not this course schedule for Fall Semester would be too much...

ECON 1
ENG R1B (Thinking about replacing with Linguistics or Rhetoric)
Math 1A
CHEM 1AL

I am hoping to get a 5 on my AP English Literature exam so that I can eliminate the R&C requirement because I am in the College of Letters and Science. Thanks once again for the incoming feedback!

A bit intense for a first semester schedule… but it’s manageable.

If anything, I’d recommend taking only 2 core classes + 1 breadth + 1-2 decals/freshman seminars. However, if you’re comfortable with the material of these courses, go for it. It’s doable.

Your intended major?

What AP or other credit do you expect to bring in?

I heard that Econ 1 and Chem 1A/L were weeders, but I wanted to take them because I am trying to decide on what subject I want to major in and those two were among my top choices. I haven’t taken any AP class in either course, but I was planning on preparing myself over the summer via online lectures, books, etc. I am very strong in math, so I’m not worried about Math 1A

I have gotten 5’s in WHAP, APUSH, and EngLang. I took the test for EngLit on Thursday

I’d say you’ll have to work really hard in Chem 1A then. Econ 1 shouldn’t be difficult even without past APs. If you’re planning to do Haas, taking this courseload might be a bit risky. Again, I think this is doable. Just it’ll be a challenging first semester. If you are feeling confident in your ability to juggle this courseload, definitely go for it.

Would it maybe be a better idea to take Chem 1A in spring then? I don’t want to compromise my first experiences because of too heavy of a courseload. I am confident in my abilities, but Cal is not my little high school

I’d highly recommend that. Classes tend to be easier during the spring.

And if you really really want to test the water, try taking all 4 classes + 1 freshman seminar/decal. This way, you have the flexibility of shop and drop one core class that might not work out (in terms of workload or/and preferences). The 1 freshman seminar/decal is there to ensure that you fulfill the 13 units/semester requirement :).

Alright. I think I am going to wait until spring to take Chem, but I’m going to stick with the rest of the courses up there. What freshman seminar courses do you recommend?

Take what you think would be interesting. Since it’s 1 unit P/NP, don’t torture yourself with a seminar that you might hate haha: [Seminars for Freshmen at UC Berkeley](http://fss.berkeley.edu/freshman.lasso)

If you want to major in chemistry, you need to take Chemistry 4A and 4B instead of 1A/1AL and 1B.

I heard that those courses were even harder than 1A/L and I’m only thinking about majoring in chem

^Well, if you major in chem, you have to take them anyway…might as well take one and see if you fall in love with chem or begin to despise it…

If you are considering majoring in chemistry, take 4A instead of 1A/1AL. 1A/1AL is for biology majors, pre-meds, and non-chemical engineering majors.

If you are very strong in math, economics (with Economics 101A, 101B, and 141 instead of 100A, 100B, and 140) may be an interesting major for you. So can math or statistics.
