My friend lives in Rubin and he likes it a lot, but he warmed me to steer clear of Goddard because even though it's right on top of campus, it's where the anti-socialites stay in their rooms all day.

Goddard is an explorations building... is it really that anti-social?

Goddard has traditionally had the rep. of being the artsy dorm. I'm not sure about anti-social, I think that just depends on the person.

Ahhh... sigh. I don't want to be in the artsy dorm. What is the not-artsy dorm, Hayden? Hayden is ugly though.

Not everyone in Goddard is artsy. Where do you get Hayden is ugly from? Most people consider Hayden to be among the best, if not the best freshman dorm. Hayden supposedly has a lot of athletes (it's where the bball team lives). I'm partial to UHall.

how about Goddard? I am consdering it as my second choice after UHall.

By the way, what about Brittany? :) I heard it has a darkroom which I think is pretty cool, but no AC? I'm kinda poor :(

What does you being poor have to do w/Brittany? The low cost triples are in Rubin.

You didn't really answer my question, but I'm not really expecting a good answer out of you anyway. And I refuse to stay in a triple and me being poor has nothing to do with anything, so what's up with Brittany?

"me being poor has nothing to do with anything"

So why mention it here? A logical person would think you said it because you wanted a low cost triple.

i lived in brittany my freshman year and it was a good time, although back then NYU wasn't really big on freshmen interaction, so my floor had no unity. it was not a total freshman dorm either, some sophomores lived there, but now it is all freshmen. the rooms are suites, and i lived in a 5 person, with my room being the triple and the other room being a double. the double was rather small, i thought, but my room was HUGE. i was afraid i was going to live in this tiny room with bunk beds on top of each other, but it was incredibly big for a dorm room. my roommate had her own walk-in closet, i had my own, and the bathroom was decent. you definitely have enough space for yourself. i hear they expanded the freshmen orientation programs and really encouraged people to socialize (probably due to all the suicides a few years back which gave NYU some bad press) so i would imagine brittany is more fun to live in now. the walk is about 5 minutes, and there is a great bagel place not even a block away, lol. plus the location, between broadway and university, is great. there is a darkroom, a rather big downstairs common area, and a former speakeasy in the penthouse that now functions as a study lounge. having no air conditioning is not fun ( i was on floor 14- well, really 13, as it doesn't have a 13th floor) and we all bought fans and slept on top of the covers. it's really not that bad though, although if you desire air conditioning, try to get another dorm.

on a side note, i lived in uhall for my spring semester sophomore year and my junior year, before they made it into a freshmen dorm. nice location, i hear it's very social (although if you are an upperclassmen, the social thing isn't really important anymore), and the rooms are pretty nice. it seems like a regular apartment building, where Brittany was an old hotel, and you can see that. uhall is quite expensive, however.

another side note... i posted this under my brother's sn here at CC, i am a senior at nyu this year, and i do not think natalie portman is hot :)

This may be a bit off topic, but what is the freshman residential program...I mean I have read the housing website but can anyone tell me what you really did/do?

Thank you so much portmanishott. I don't really understand what "suites" are? I'm guessing, it's five people that share a common door, two on one side and three on the other and all share one bathroom? If you can expand on that, I'd appreciate it!

a suite just means there is more than one dorm room (with beds) in it. i believe at brittany the most is two rooms in a suite. i currently live at alumni hall, which is all singles, and our suite consists of two rooms, but others consist of up to 4 single rooms. every room does have a bathroom, which is great. i know brittany does have some single room triples, meaning just a room with 3 beds and a bathroom.

Thank you so much! Also, how do you know who your room/suitemates are?

Brittany is pretty nice (it's kind of similar looking to Hayden, but maybe a step down). There is no dining hall, but it is close to Rubin and Third North dining halls. I don't think the lack of AC is that big of a deal unless you plan on staying over the summer. When I was at NYU, Brittany had a rep. for being a very studious dorm, e.g. many pre-meds, though these reps can change from time to time.

Do you know if it's possible for a Freshman to get a single?

this will be an incredibly tough decision...i guess freshman RD applicants are lucky since they won't get their first choice anyway

collegebound28:
It is possible, but unlikely without special circumstances. Hayden actually has 2 singles on each floor from 3-8 (12 singles total).

i think it would depend on how social you want your floor community to be.

generally, people who live in dorms are much more social. goddard people tend to be very close to their floors because of explorations and shared WTE classes. my best friend at third ave. north barely communicates with his floormates. same with my UHall friends.

i think goddard is pretty nice. i originally wanted hayden, but got randomly assigned into goddard, which i think is the best mistake ever. goddard is actually very social since it's so much smaller and more intimate. my dorm is cleaner and larger than many others i've seen.

i also like rubin a lot. the rooms there are huge, as are brittany rooms. no a/c is bearable, as you only need it like the first two weeks of school. hayden is great as well, for its rooms and its community. i wonder what weinstein is going to be like after they remodel it this summer, but this dorm is basically the center of campus (worth it despite the mediocre rooms currently). third ave north is the largest freshman dorm on campus. uhall is the newest, and pretty nice as well (but be warned...you might never talk to some people you see everyday).

the party dorms change from year to year. this year, i think it's brittany and hayden. third ave north had a lot of write-ups earlier this year.
