From California to New York: CSULB to Baruch College

Hello! I'm planning to move to New York and I plan on finishing school (of course). I graduated high school in 2010, began at El Camino Community College and transferred into Cal State Long Beach with a major in Journalism. I have a rough 3.19 GPA from El Camino and a 3.79 at Cal State Long Beach. I've only been at Long Beach for 1 semester, 2 counting the one online class I am taking currently. The reason I'm only taking one is because I'm going to be in New York this semester. I have my eyes set on Baruch seeing that they have a great Journalism department with an emphasis on Creative Writing. My cumulative gpa will probably end up to be roughly 3.3 (sad). They mention in their transfer application that high school records will also be reviewed (but I don't know how extensively). My gpa in high school was 3.8 with an average score on my SATS in the 1700s.

I'm pretty sure I can write a stellar entrance paper.. but as for my stats, I don't think my numbers look so great on paper. I noticed that their admissions percentage appears pretty low but all that could be relative to the types of students applying (?). I also heard that they prioritize new york residents yet I thought that many schools favored out of state/foreigners for that extra lump sum of tuition we have to pay.

All in all, I'm very nervous. If I am to transfer, I would like to transfer into a better or just as decent school as Cal State Long Beach. I was reckless in my freshman year of college so that further explains my horrible start/gpa.. something I have been trying to raise for the last two years.

I just wanted to know/hear if anybody has any views on this whole ordeal personally or from hearsay. I actually have no idea how the school system works in New York. I've been in California most of my life.

I apologize if I am posting in the wrong forum (I'm a newb to this)!

Thank you for your time

Have you considered doing Academic Renewal for any of your classes that you took at El Camino? I did that to effectively “erase” an entire semester of bad grades at Santa Monica College, and it drastically improved my GPA, and subsequently my chances of transferring to a better school. A certain amount of time has to have elapsed, I think a couple years, and you can only “erase” D, F and Withdrawals. One bad semester was really holding me back. It still appears on the transcript, but does not affect my GPA.

As to how schools work in NY, can’t really help you there. I moved to California for college after spending my childhood and high school years in Pennsylvania/New York, but have no idea how the college system works there. (Other than knowing the sting of being rejected at NYU, which had been my #1 choice…)

Have a great time in New York! I’m looking forward to moving back one day.
